2014 tOSU Defense Discussion

I think we are absolutely headed in the right direction. We'll see after this week but we are showing signs that once we get used to the scheme and the young guys "get it", I think this defense can be outstanding. Even at that, they have looked pretty decent...even with VT they were typically all over the play, yet it was a perfectly thrown ball/catch every time basically (the more frustrating thing is that they have yet to even come close to replicating that this season). As long as we get better every week and learn, I will be happy and this will be a very good.
This is a great game to measure our defensive improvement. I hope we will see steady improvement. If so, then we are off to the races. If not, well then that's another matter.

Well I feel this game is the measuring stick on how the year will go. Will we improve or not from last week? If not then it may be another frustrating year because good defenses learn from their mistakes and build off of them. The one's with issues keep making the same errors

Losing Spence is such a downer. I was so pumped to see him and Bosa wreaking havoc this year. They complement each other perfectly.
Somewhat related to that, I thought John Porentas, writing at the Ozone, had an interesting and somewhat persuasive thought. The thought being that the big pass play vulnerability the OSU defense showed last week had as much or more to do with the D-line's failure to create consistent pocket pressure as it had to do with coverage failures.

More generally, the pass rush so far has been less than I'd hoped, and the loss of Spence is a contributing factor.

The defensive is not getting the pressure we had thought they would get. Not "the best defensive line in America".....yet!
Fortunately the offense is so good it gives the defense some slack to fix the young guy mistakes. A young team getting better and better. This is exciting and scary to watch at the same time.

And it's a damn good thing too. If we didn't have the talent we have on O, this D would be spent by the half every game.

Well after watching the whole game, there is imprivement but coach just stated the truth in his interview, this isn't a championship level defense. Too many big plays. Now, we did make some big plays against them, but also gave up some. I feel like some progress has been made, but there is still a long long way to go

Lots of improvement today. This is the most aggressive an Ohio State defense has played in years! Now we're getting somewhere! I think Maryland is not as good as Cincinnati and the coaches saw that and planned an aggressive game plan.
We had one big pass play today and I think it was Burrows that got beat for a big gain? Nice seeing Apple get some revenge for being picked on. A lot of mistakes were cleaned up this week.

I would have been completely happy with the D if it hadn't been for those late two TDs where they basically quit playing. God that irked me so bad. At least the first TD the Buckeyes made them earn it. Terps didn't even have a hundred yards of offense going into the half if I remember correctly. I can also only recall two long pass plays. One was just an amazing catch the receiver with Grant all over him and the other was with a backup in the game. Progress.

Let's take a look at some defensive rankings for this year's D (per ESPN as of the first half of tonight's game)

Total Yards: 1262yds (15th)
per Game: 316 (23rd)

Pass Yards: 650 (9th)
per game: 162 (14th)

Rush Yards: 612 (53rd)
per game: 153 (65th)

Points: 80 (26th)
per game: 20 (32nd)

Draw what conclusions you may wish, but even after the weak opponents we've played these numbers aren't really all that bad.

Sure we don't have an elite overall D, but what we have is quite serviceable if the offense is clicking.
