2014 tOSU Defense Discussion

Yep. According to Ash, guys made bad reads on at least 2 of the 3 long TD passes. That's fixable. And it was Bell and not Powell who made those mistakes. Grant got caught looking on his TD give up. And in the second half they backed off the corners and that quieted Moore. He disappeared.
Ash believes these were all "fixable" mistakes. I believe him.

If you back off the corners, you will again be succeptible to quick outs. It's all a choice. And yeah, I'm sure it CAN be fixed. But until we SEE it fixed for several games, it's all in doubt.

Watching the game for the first time this afternoon and it's always easier without the emotion of game day.

I may just be an eternal optimist but I wasn't as frustrated seeing the TDs as I was seeing the score change live.

2 busts and good coverage by Bell that just turned into a bad play for OSU.

Overall the team tackling in the secondary looked better and the umbrellas seemed a lot tighter. I think McMillian makes a huge difference.

All that said, I've thought maybe we had turned a corner on this issue before so I remain skeptical but encouraged.

I think those screens and bubbles will be better played with a little less cushion from the inside guy. We were playing it but it was an automatic 5 yards because even the LB we had out there couldnt get there sooner. That prompted Grant to try and jump it the one time Kiel held onto it and then there was not help behind. Lost in all of this, where the hell was the safety on that play? There was 0 defenders anywhere in the middle of that field. That can't happen.

Joey Bosa is some kind of an animal. Love watching him play. I don't think Washington is as good on the end is he is inside. I would rather us put him back inside and someone else on the outside or start some more blitzing that edge. Need a couple of LB's to step up in the passing game in my opinion. They aren't playing awful but they aren't making any big plays either. Let's see something happen this week coming up from Perry or McMillan to be a turning point.

It's obviously a work in progress. Gotta get the base D down before you start working in the blitz packages. Probably (obviously, maybe) not going to improve as fast as the O, but this is the brave new world of football where offenses rule.

Bama isn't Bama because they have a fantastic O, though they are supremely efficient in that regard. They are who they are because they're really, really good on D. Same with Sparty. And yet, they've both gotten lit up already this year. Excellent D is at a HUGE premium in this day and age.

There are tons and tons of great young offensive minds out there right now. Defensive, not so much.

I have faith in the coaches.

I think Kiel is the best QB we will face this year but not by a wide margin, Cook is a very, very good QB. We gave up some big plays but a lot of what we saw was youth, I don't see systemic issues. The 80 yard screen TD was completely unacceptable but the deep TD that Bell gave up was 100% technique. It was not a great performance for our secondary but I saw adjustments and better play as we went along...that is the goal (at least mine), learn from mistakes, improve, and grow every game.
YES! They are very young, and they can afford to make mistakes early in the year. They just need to make them, learn from them and get better every week. The schedule now isn't too tough. The last thing I want right now is a perfect game against a poor opponent and getting their confidence too high. The coaches and the players need to keep making adjustments, keep getting better every week. Then we'll be ready for sparty. Then keep getting better and then we'll be ready for bowl season. I want a bowl win this year, haven't had one in far too long.

1. I was very impressed by Kiel and his arm strength and ability. I have been all along. He's going to set a lot of records on that team.
2. All their receivers, but Washington, were big, physical guys who can catch the ball and run. Very impressive group. And Tuberville said as much.
3. Their defense is a liability but they can probably out score most people.
Looking at their schedule they have a game at Miami. And ECU is on their schedule, which should be another shoot out and very entertaining.

- Its going to be hard to keep Raekwon off the field, IMO he just has "IT"
- Steve Miller brings little to nothing to the table, more Frazier, more Holmes
- on two of those TD's, IMO Kiel had two much time to let those routes develop, given how many of their linemen were hurt and how good our DLine is supposed to be.

I just keep thinking of how young we are and how much talent isn't even seeing playing time. Then I think about how it takes more than a season to fully integrate a defensive philosophy (see Sparty as an example) and I feel perfectly fine. Ash is a great coach. I believe that wholeheartedly. We are moving in the right direction. Only complaint I would have from what I have seen so far is I would like to see E Smith get in games as much as possible. I have said this many times but he looks to be a great one. Same can be said for Damon Webb. Get them on the field as much as possible to gain experience. Other than that, just keep recruiting your tail off and bring in top talent. We are moving in the right direction despite the big plays by Cincy.

Yes exactly. On the deep routes were Bell and Apple got beat the reason he was able to let the play develop was there was zero pressure. We need more than Bosa when we rush the passer and I am beyond underwhelmed with our front when rushing the QB.

Also yes I'd rather see Holmes out there then to see Steve Miller. I'm happy Steve has stuck it out on our team but if a player hasn't made an impact years 1 through 3 maybe someone else should be given a shot.

No one is giving Tyvis Powell much love but his play has been IMO the highlight of our defense. He doesn't get beat deep, teams avoid him, and he makes plays such as INTs. He doesn't have his name called a lot and IMO as a DB that's a great thing. Reminds me of Gamble or Jenkins in that we rarely heard much from them every game other than getting INTs.

To me teams seem to be targeting Apple and particularly Bell. With Burrows being taller, heavier, and more of a natural corner I'd like to see more of him

Webb has yet to play but Urban has specifically pointed out Webb and Smith as being very close to forcing their way on the field.

It's sick how much talent we have waiting

Play 1 was a bang bang play on a safety, and pretty strong coverage for that position. I'd like to see him tackle him after the play but you can't hope for much better coverage that far downfield from a safety.

Bell did a good job of getting his arm in the way too, it was actually not an easy catch to have made considering that. I do wish Bell would have turned to look for the ball though. He may have had a nice pick had he done so.

I haven't heard or seen to many of Chris ash"s press conference. Do any of you think that we are getting any better in our secondary coverage , or are we still looking the same as last year. I too, would like to hope we can fix the "fixable mistakes.
