2014 tOSU Defense Discussion

There seems to be an idea floating around that any performances against teams not in the top 10 nationally are not meaningful. I can't agree with that viewpoint.
I don't think the idea floating around is as extreme as that; that wins against non-top-ten opponents are meaningless. It's more along the lines of it being difficult to tell whether OSU is a top-ten caliber team until they play one, or at least until they play a ranked opponent.

People who watch the games can tell the defense is drastically improved. If you've just seen the final scores, and saw the highlights of the UC game, you wouldn't know it. But I saw a nasty defense out there against Rutgers on Saturday that I haven't seen in a while. And I loved all the turnovers forced against Maryland. Excited to see them continue to improve.

Hackenburg will be a good 'preliminary' test for tOSU defense this week end. He's one of the best passers the Buckeyes will face, although it seems like his OL is leaving him vulnerable. The prelim is of course looking forward to Sparty and Connor Cook. TOSU D is visably getting better by the week, and, in my opinion, looking more like tOSU 'D' of old. Love to see the DB's getting after the WR, and having the LB's fill the holes in an aggressive DL. I believe that Penn St is overmatched, but will give a good tussle, and that MSU is stacked on both D and O. Dantonio is pointing them toward tOSU, with Meatchicken nothing more than a speed bump prior to 'the big one' on NOv 8. Am rooting for continued improvement and no injuries to tOSU D. It seems to matter how a team is performing toward the end of the season.

In a 'not so humble way', am looking over the predictions for the 2014 season, and it was projected that the D passing numbers would go lower, and by golly they are (not looking at my missed projections :) ). Go Bucks, humble the Nits (and keep that damn lion quiet).

It's beating a dead horse but Spence' absence makes a great difference. Miller and Frazier have made some plays but they are most often completely invisible and it has to be Bosa making the big play. Even Bennet has been absent a bit lately but Washington is finally getting into the act. That missing link ripples through the rest of our defense. The LBs are really playing well lately and the DBs have started to get better position.

The DB technique of playing the receiver's hands instead of making a play on the ball is killing us I think. They really could have had some INT's this year and made other big plays if they would have gone balls out for the ball instead of playing the technique they are currently playing. I'm sure it's far too late to make that change now but it is going to continue to hamper us. Catch the daggone ball too when the opportunity is there!

Yikes, the tOSU pass defense (13th) is better than the tOSU rushing defense (186th). What's wrong with the 2014 rush defense?

  • Scoring defense: 19.9 points a game, (17th nationally)
  • Total defense: 300 yards, (eighth nationally)
  • Pass defense: 181 yards, (13th nationally)
  • Run defense: 119 yards, (18th nationally)
  • Takeaways: 14 interceptions (seventh nationally) and forced nine fumbles

I don't think the upcoming game against MSU is going to help this.

Uh, do I have to do this again? Navy was the outlier.

Take the navy game out, and the Rush defense allows 83 yards per game which would be 4th best defense.

The rush defense is also improving (with the navy game included) every game. OSU started out 110th in rush defense after the first game.

I'd say going from 110th to 18th in 8 weeks is pretty impressive.

Only 4 teams (including Navy) has rushed for more than 100 yards against OSU's defense. Rutgers being the highest outside of Navy at 149. (which means they got their yardage during garbage time)
