2014 tOSU Defense Discussion

Bell did a good job of getting his arm in the way too, it was actually not an easy catch to have made considering that. I do wish Bell would have turned to look for the ball though. He may have had a nice pick had he done so.
This. I've noticed that our DBs continue to not look back for the ball...

I haven't heard or seen to many of Chris ash"s press conference. Do any of you think that we are getting any better in our secondary coverage , or are we still looking the same as last year. I too, would like to hope we can fix the "fixable mistakes.
I havn't seen any of his "press conferences" but I would love to see more "press coverage". Plus I'm tired of hearing how fixable our mistakes are, FIX THEM!

Some costly mistakes Saturday but I feel like we did much better than the VT game. Sadly I think we needed the loss to get people motivated. Some players got beat but at least I didn't see them playing 10 yds off the receivers every 3rd down.

I finally watched the game last night (out of town with no BTN last weekend) and was surprised how fixable I felt like the big play mistakes were. I've been hard on the pass defense but this didn't seem like the clueless play from last year and our athletes are better. For example, Vonn has more than plenty of ability to stop the first one if he turns toward the ball at all. I'd read that he got beat on the play and thought I'd see him seven yards behind the receiver. He was right there. This is about as good as you can feel about giving up three long TDs as I can imagine. I think they'll get it sorted out.

Right now, the DL concerns me as much as anything. Not much penetration against the run vs. any balanced offense and, IMO, too much predictability in the pass rush (could they shift around a little bit please?). If man coverage is going to be the system, then I think you need full commitment to it on the front line too, which means taking a few more chances to get more pressure. Putting guys on islands and then rushing four "straight up" the vast majority of the time makes little sense to me.

Yeah, I'm with you. This stuff is very fixable. I guess I can sympathize with the DB's a little. Played some CB and safety. When you get beat in man-no help like Vonn Bell did, all you can think about is to catch up, and all that stuff about turning and looking for the ball goes out the window. What they should do in that situation is just tackle the receiver. It's a 15 yard penalty - which is better than an 80 yard TD. If my memory is right , on the other two, Grant and Apple were playing off a few yards, didn't hit the receivers, and then got caught up in the trash. They have to decide to either get up in the faces of the receivers and beat the shit out of them on the snap, or play 5-7 yards off, read the route, and then get on their hips. On those two plays, they did something in between - which is poison.

I think the tackling has been a lot better than last year overall. The LB play has not been consistently spectacular, but solid. Perry is having a really fine year. Lee makes plays. McMillan has his moments, and I don't recall saying, "Curtis, what are you doing?" this year. The line is where I'm disappointed - but only because this was supposed to be possibly the best line in CFB. If they were, I would expect to see that they are consistently unblockable, and that they are hitting or sacking the QB on a large number of pass plays. I haven't seen it yet. Bosa's play was huge, but give me another big play the DL made in the Cincy game. On the plus side, no one except Navy has run on them well, so I think they are playing pretty well, but they are not the best DL in the country. Maybe Spence would have made them that, but we will never know.

Just hold teams to no more than 23 points each game the rest of the way, and I think we will run the table because I think that OSU offense is good enough to score 24 on anyone. They aren't there, but I think they can get there. Better be there by Nov 8th.

I agree that the tackling generally seems to be better. I can't think of a whiff on an attempted kill-shot like all those that drove me crazy last year.

Against Va Tech, Armani Reeves had a chance to knock a WR OOB inside the 5. He whiffed, the WR scored, and I threw up a little bean dip and beer into my mouth.

Teams are purposefully scheming around our DL...have you seen a single 3-5 step drop in the pocket? I can think of three against Navy, two ended up in sacks pretty quickly. It is mostly quick hits, roll-outs where they double the DE to the roll-out side, etc...you simply cannot get to the QB in that amount of time unless you go completely unblocked. I expected a little more than what we have seen but having gone back through the film, a lot of times the DL is making the play but not the tackle. Bennett is consistently getting double teamed and still forcing ball carriers out of their lane, or making the QB throw too early...Schutt as well. Frazier/Smith are holding the edge well on runs and give good support...we know they are not pass rushers, so get Holmes/Lewis in more for that. Washington (since the Navy game) has been kind of disappointing since teams are not showing him much attention. Losing Spence definitely hurts. But at the end of the day, they are getting so much attention that it enables our LBs to make the play and mostly they have. No, we are not raining sacks everywhere but they have been a success in doing their part. Now if they are not wreaking havoc on offenses like Wisconsin, Nebraska, and MSU...then that is a problem with their scheme. I get that those are arguably the 3 best offenses in the B1G but the style of offense they play should allow our DL to get pressure and penetration more frequently.

I'm not as concerned about our defense as many of you. We sucked against VA Tech, mostly because we couldn't get off the field on third down. We shut out Kent, and we beat Cincinnati by 22. Overall, not that terrible.

I think we are absolutely headed in the right direction. We'll see after this week but we are showing signs that once we get used to the scheme and the young guys "get it", I think this defense can be outstanding. Even at that, they have looked pretty decent...even with VT they were typically all over the play, yet it was a perfectly thrown ball/catch every time basically (the more frustrating thing is that they have yet to even come close to replicating that this season). As long as we get better every week and learn, I will be happy and this will be a very good.
