2014 tOSU Defense Discussion

I don't think that, aside from JT Barrett, there's a QB in the B1G as good as Kiel, though I could be wrong re: Connor Cook.

Yeah, Cook would be the only QB I see as possibly being in Kiel's league, and even then he's probably a step below.

I was frustrated by the pass defense obviously, but I think the issues are easier to fix when you're giving up 3 big plays than if they were allowing 12 play, 80+ yard drives all night.

Play 1 was a bang bang play on a safety, and pretty strong coverage for that position. I'd like to see him tackle him after the play but you can't hope for much better coverage that far downfield from a safety.

Play 2 was a lousy scheme. Only time that was the problem from what I recall.

Play 3 was a great playcall by UC to take advantage of a scheme. The usually solid Doran jumped the underneath route (I believe with a pump from Kiel) and it was off to the races. That's the risk of this scheme.

Still a big improvement overall from last year and still a long ways to go to reach where they want and need to be.

In fairness the defense also allowed that screen for a TD where the guy went untouched about 25 yards into the end zone and another huge TD that was called back for a OLinemen down field. Yes it was a penalty, but it really didn't effect the play, where one of our DBs decided to leave a WR wide open for what would have been another 50+ yard TD

I do think the defense has improved from last year, but I also don't think this was a "3 plays" were bad and everything else was good deal. Even on the offensive PI, Eli is flat out beat badly until he clearly holds the WR back.. that could have been another 70 yard TD if he doesn't hold the wideout.

I think there needs to be some re-teaching in that meeting room and they need to also start looking at personnel. I'm sorry to call out a player, but Eli has not played well vs VT or Cincy.

Well one of those SHOULD have been an incompletion or a pick if Vonn Bell turns his head around.

Is Gunner Keil the best QB we'll face this year? I'm asking that question seriously... provided Stave doesn't get back in the game.
Not sure, but I think it's a question of is Cincy the best offense we'll face this year and not just the QB itself. Keil is very sound, Cincy has a good offense, but I think they're run game is a relative non-factor, which has a big impact on the pass game for their (or any) offense.

Looking forward, I think we have a bigger challenge ahead w/Sparty and their always balanced run/pass balance, especially with Cooke playing well again this season thus far. The rest of the schedule projects w/weaker offenses, but I think that's where we'll see if we're truly improved or not. Last year's D would allow the Michigan's and Indiana's to pass all over the place. Time will tell us if we're truly improved in that end or not, or will we learn from last nights mistakes?

Urban said it's back to the drawing board for the secondary. Rinse and repeat.

When I see it happen twice on TD throws, I just have to believe that it's not just a coincidence. Tuberville's OC saw the Safety Assignments and exploited it.
I mentioned in the game thread that Tuberville said in the sideline interview to start the second half that they were going to "throw something new out there" or something to that effect...you could tell they saw something in our coverage and they subsequently got two sudden-strike TDs.

I think Kiel is the best QB we will face this year but not by a wide margin, Cook is a very, very good QB. We gave up some big plays but a lot of what we saw was youth, I don't see systemic issues. The 80 yard screen TD was completely unacceptable but the deep TD that Bell gave up was 100% technique. It was not a great performance for our secondary but I saw adjustments and better play as we went along...that is the goal (at least mine), learn from mistakes, improve, and grow every game.

I would like this defense to rush more than 4 players a little more often. I think the amount of times they rushed more than 4 could be counted on a few fingers. They probably rushed 3 guys more often than they rushed more than 4.. I think if you put a little heat on a QB it is going to affect his deep ball accuracy. I know that there were a couple TDs yesterday that would not have been stopped even by rushing more than 4 guys but at least it would have made their QB and other QB's to follow think a little.

Exactly. Bell and Apple were there to make a plan and just failed to do so but at least they knew their assignment and didn't look back like "was that me or you" like we would've last year. So on those two their guys just made plays and the screen pass while we should've stopped it was a good call. IMO, the only play of the game as you said RB that is unacceptable is when Grant just bailed on his man and let him go un covered and un touched for a long TD.

I too think Kiel and their passing attack will be the best we will play all year. The reason why is the depth of all of the Cincinnati talent that forced us into multiple one on one looks because when we play teams like Maryland next week it'll be a little easier to zero in on their star player (Diggs)
