2014 tOSU Defense Discussion

If you look at yards per play, the Buckeyes defense looks very good; overall we gave up only 4.2 ypp. The issue was our ability to get off the field after third down, which we obviously could not do, with VT being successful on third down 9 of 17 times (many of which were long conversions). That's the same problem we had at the end of last season. Hope Ash et al find the answer to that problem.

An offense that gets 4.2 YPP theoretically would never punt, ever. They're at 3rd and 1 every series. It's not a good number.
4.2 YPP allowed is a good number. For reference, Michigan State led the nation last year by allowing 3.9 YPP on average whereas OSU allowed 5.2 YPP on average.

Yes, an offense would score a TD every possession if they averaged 4.2 YPP gained with a standard deviation of zero. That of course is not what happens.

Interesting defensive comment by Meyer on O-Zone:

Ohio State's 'Heartbreak:' the Defense Giving Leads Right Back to Opponents

Plenty of things went wrong in Ohio State’s last three losses — all three of which came in the team’s last four games.
Turnovers, bad penalties and errors on special teams, missed opportunities or slow starts can shoulder the blame. But perhaps the biggest issue was the artists formerly known as the Silver Bullets giving up leads after the Buckeye offense worked so hard to put the team ahead or tie the game.

Did the defense kick the ball out of bounds too?

Welp. We all got tired of soft coverage being dinked and dunked down the field. Now we get to see what happens when press coverage doesn't work.

I don't know what the answer is. Hell, I don't even know what the question is. But hopefully we can still see some improvement over the rest of the season.

This should settle the raging debate from the last couple years about coaching/scheme/players. New scheme, new DC, mostly the same players as last year, same old same old.

They don't lack talent. There are some tremendous athletes out there - they just lack football smarts and discipline. I think coaching can help with those things, but only to a point. It's up to players to acquire it.

Yep. I remember repeating ad nauseam that they played that kind of coverage because they were even worse at playing press-man. Aggressiveness without technique and intelligence is pointless.

We did finally adjust(I haven't re-watched the game) and whatever we did took away Moore. I'm guessing a safety over the top..........
But, sweet geezus! That was sure ugly for a while! I'm not sold on Apple in press coverage. But Grant got torched too!

Wow....more than half of the UC yards came on those 3 plays.

As frustrating as the big plays were, I think (maybe?) that's it is easier to cope with those than having the opponent march down the field over and over again. Without the big plays, UC didn't do much. It should be much easier to fix isolated breakdowns than overall schematic failures or lack of talent.

And really, the only one that really makes me cringe was the one right before the half. A safety jumping an intermediate route in the situation just shows a lack of awareness and football knowledge that would really, really concern me as a coach. Or concern me as a fan if he hasn't been coached to recognize the situation. That one was disturbing.
