2014 tOSU Defense Discussion

Even though we gave up a lot of yardage against Navy, they only scored 17 points. Keeping an explosive offense like that out of the end zone is a worthy achievement and an improvement over last year. Navy will prove how that was a very good performance against them by not losing more than 1 or 2 games this year.

Navy has a good offense, but I would not claim it to be explosive. They are methodical and keep TOP so the opponents can't score. But 17 is still decent for a young D with a new scheme that means nothing against Navy. VT is the true test.

Not a lot to take away for the D against navy. - They only passed a few times.
- seemed like that pitch man was available all game, which worries me wrt assignments but theyll never see it again and lbs were playing out of position... so...
- i thought there were a lot of missed tackles but Urban contradicted that in post game [shrugs]
- liked the goal line stand but then they pseudo gave up the td on 4th

So all things considered its still a big unknown to me, but feeling a little more optimistic

I'm excited to see our real D this weekend. Guys have been working for 6 months on suring up the issues in the pass game and in the back 7. I'm hoping we can unleash the hounds on the Dline this week and see what we've really got.

So, let me get this straight. The guy who coached every LBer we have in the NFL right now, you want to let go?View attachment 9412

Yeah, our linebackers have been awful the past few years and the defense went right down the drain with Fickell holding the defensive coordinator title. Over and done with though. He is on the staff and will have my full support while he's there; I hope the linebackers improve drastically and he proves me wrong.

Wish we had Spence this week. Can't wait any longer to see he and Bosa wreaking havoc.

And really they only scored 10 (see the photo revealing no touchdown on the 4th down) and that was a hell of a goal line stand. And last season, Navy averaged close to 30 points per game, so in reality we held them 20 below what they had last year and frankly, I expect that average to go up with the experience and talent they returned. Now of course that does not answer all of our questions in the back 7, it does indicate our ability to step up and respond to a challenge. I don't really think people give enough credit to Navy, who is a damn good football team that will likely be a 10+ win team and in the top 25 by the end of the year. Their defense is always a little shaky, but their offense is tough to stop.

He has your full support yet your initial post stated you don't like having him on the staff. Reminds one of the old saying- with friends like this, who needs enemies.

Ryan Shazier is a starting LB for the Pittsburgh Steelers as a rookie, and would beg to differ. Certainly he blossomed under Fickell's watch. Not all players pan out and now that he can concentrate on the LB role he had before, you can already see Grant coming on finally and Perry has very much improved. Plus, all of his charges have been good off the field as well. Keep coach Fick

if you click on the link below, you will find some videos that might remind you of last year's pass coverage

http://www.cleveland.com/osu/index.ssf/2014/09/ohio_state-virginia_tech_tv_re.html

It seemed to me last year we were running a lot of "soft zone" coverages while Saturday we were running "soft man-to-man" coverages. We heard all this talk of Chris Ash and his aggressive style of defense. It makes me think Fickell still has too much control over the defense.

So many things in life are a matter of timing. Noah Spence would have been a huge help against VTech. But, he's back now and let the terror begin!
A defense that is chasing down QBs and not giving then time to find the second receiver is a big help to a young offense.

I believe I heard the we only played "tight man" on downs 1 and 2 and on 3rd and long we backed off.
