2014 tOSU Defense Discussion

I honestly wouldn't want Marcus or Spence at LB, we need all the pass rushers we can get. Keep the pressure on opposing QBs all season and plays into our DBs favor. A steady rotation of guys that can get to the QB can get us into the NC.
Marcus behind Spence with no drop off, and I can't wait to see how Tyquan Lewis has progressed after his redshirt year

2013 defense: really good DL + 1 proven playmaker at LB + a very experienced defensive backfield (through the Wisconsin game) = a defense incapable of defending the forward pass.

2014 defense: really good DL + young but highly regarded LB corps + a very inexperienced defensive backfield = ???

Ash and Johnson have to be difference makers in terms of player development, attitude, and scheme. It will be fun to watch as usual. Although every time the defense went on the field last year, I was just hoping they didn't get embarrassed. That's got to change before Ohio State is a legit national contender. Let's spend the spring focused on defending the screen pass - in all of its variations.

tOSU tried a fullback at MLB and that turned out pretty well. If the safeties can play smart, and cover the 'blows' that aggressive CB's miss, then tOSU will be fine. If the CB's play 10 yards off the line, and let the WR's get a full head of steam up, then there will be some big gainers. Having said that, spread/flood formations put more pressure on the safeties than the CB's, because more to cover when the WR's get 'lost' in coverage. Hence the nickel and dime defenses, giving more backfield coverage. Ultimately, think tOSU will be fine, if the DL rises to the occasion and gets big pushes on the QB each and every play. That means hurries, and less time for the CB's and safeties to be in tight coverage. I like Ash's coverage theories, and expect tOSU to play tighter man this year. Got absolutely killed on the bubble screen last year, and opposition kept exploiting it, successfully. Second-and-short is a whole lot easier to exploit than having second-and-long for an offense.

Heck, this time of year everyone has a perfect won-loss record, and optimism abounds. Fully expect tOSU to be fine in the D, with the talent showing growth and savvy. Biggest problem will be getting all the stockpiled DB talent the reps to develop that savvy and cohesion.

I was hoping to find a thread on the state of the defense. So much knowledge in here, it's amazing.

Hope this isn't a dumb question but I've always wondered why Spielman doesn't come back to coach LB's in some capacity?

He's my favorite all-time non-USC player and Top 5 alltime college player anyways, and my favorite alltime Lions player. I loved watching him at tOSU and Detroit so much. The man was beastmode and almost a God to me.

You don't see great players making great coaches very often. Sometimes. My theory is that that you can't teach what you didn't have to learn. What made Chris a great LB was his instincts - which cannot be taught - you have it or you don't. Guys who were not great players can take a guy who has those great instincts and teach them technique and the mental side of it because that's how they were taught, but when they played, they rely more on their instincts than technique.

I love Chris, but I have my doubts about whether he can be an effective coach. FWIW.

Look at guys like Michael Jordan, magic Johnson, isiah Thomas, herm Edward, Wayne Gretzky, mike singletary, Kevin Mchale, etc. Few great players make great or even good coaches. They expect players to want to work as hard as they did and be as talented. There are numerous stories of Jordan pissing off guys with the wizards and bobcats, and same with singletary who had an infamous on camera fight with Troy smith.

And after Stephanie's passing, he is now a single parent with time constraints that would be disadvantageous for any program let alone OSU.

He remarried and has only one child living at home.
But I agree that he won't coach.
He has a nice gig.
We need to get away from the insert former buckeye great who hasn't ever coached or hasn't coached in a decade should be hired mantra.

Off topic but Spielman remarried???? When did this happen? If so good for him I'm sure it's tough losing someone like Stephanie.

It'd be interesting to see if someone like Spielman could workout as a coach but I'm sure he gets paid pretty well and needing to be more available for his kids I'm sure is a factorm
