2014 tOSU Defense Discussion

Only desire I'd have to play Minnesota again is to shut up the one player after the game that said we weren't as good as TCU and that they'd see us again. Give me bucky though even though I think it'll be a really close game we need one more quality win.

Yeah I totally don't get the desire to play them again. Hopefully Wiscy takes care of business and then we handle them.
Agreed. Why would anyone care what Minnesota players said after they lost? Thinking practically, OSU's resume for the playoff is boosted the most if they beat a previously 10-2, pretty highly ranked, Wisconsin team in the conference championship game.

Ugh. I saw some really good defensive play today... but also some of last year's brain-dead give up the big play "defense". We didn't exactly over look IU but when we got up 14-0 I think we thought it was over.

I'll say what I said last week.

Tyvis Powell is struggling vs the run. He's taking poor angles and he's never been a strong tackler. He's been pretty poor the last three games outings and I don't know how he's keeping his job next year with Erick Smith on the roster.

Also, our LBs are just not up to snuff against the run and it's been the case the last three weeks. They show flashes but there is no consistency which leads to huge chunks being ripped off at times. Curtis Grant and Darron Lee are not playing winning football vs the run right now and Perry, who I thought played well today, it still not as technically sound as we've grown accustomed to our LBs being.. That 90 yard TD today was an example of Perry and Grant not being in sync.. They both looked to fill the same whole.. If they watch the tape they'll probably see that Perry should have gotten outside leverage and forced the RB back inside where Grant was filling... Perry ended up staying inside and it led to an untouched 90 yard run, after Powell took a brutal angle in his attempt to clean up the play..

Complicating matters is that Ash has shown that he's not going to add extra people to the box just to slow the run down. He's pretty set on providing help to his CBs vs the pass, so we're seeing a lot of 6 and 7 guys in the box. I get this against balanced teams but vs Minnesota and Indiana we're dealing with two QBs who can't throw.. would have been more than willing to let our corners man up a little more vs these teams and stick an extra hat in the box. He's putting a lot of pressure on the front 4 and then the 2-3 LBs (a lot of time Lee is out in the slot) to play perfect cause when our guys get blocked up, there is no DB to serve as an extra hat because they are really focusing on preventing pass completions.

Vs Wisconsin he better make an adjustment because we're gonna give up some huge plays if we just keep doing what we've been doing

Got to see some highlights and read some of the posters here so here are my observations.

For the second year in a row teams have figured out how to mercifully attack our defense late in the year. Last year it was throwing screens and down the seams and this year it's going off tackle with pulling lineman. What sucks is for two years we continuously talk about being disgusted with our play yet fail to change. If -ichigan runs for 150-200 next week then we have a schematic issue that we are not correcting and personally I already think we do.

The issue I am seeing is we are not bringing our safeties down into the box and we are relying on our safeties to read the run/pass and to react accordingly. The issue is when you read run and you are 15 yards yards from the play you have to really move to get into position and what our guys are not doing is they aren't filling the empty lane and they are taking horrendous angles essentially either over running the lane or they're just not controlled enough to make the tackle.

Bottom line we need to adjust because while the pass defense seems cured our run defense is beyond poor this season. They have failed every test all season when facing a good rushing opponent and have failed in horrible style. Massive cut back lanes due to no one filling, no safety support, and just no consistency.

At this pointour last 4 opponents can't throw yet we still role with 6 and maybe 7 at the most in the box. Why such respect? Grant is fine on everyones number 1 deep threat so why the need to keep our softies so deep? IMO bring one safety in with the other playing centerfield and have a 4-4 front look. You can still retreat into our base if they give us a passing look but in the case its a run I like our odds with a safety that is already in the box, under control, and in his god damn gap.

Teams have figured out how to hit us and just like last year we are doing nothing to adapt. They're expecting perfect execution as the remedy the issue is our guys are proving it is not something we can execute for 60 minutes. Every plan is flawless if executed and rarley is a gameplan executed ever at that level. If we can't stop the run then keep adding players in the front lines till you do. Then teams will say wtf this ain't cool and try to pass which until someone beats us deep a few times we should be ok with. Force teams to do something they don't want to do dammit.

At the battle of the bulge did our commanders tell the front lines oh just execute our plan. Or did they send reinforcements to secure the front line? Well secure the damn front line starting yesterday.

God I am glad I am not Meyers or our defensive guys and have to put up with asshole armchair coaches like myself.

Against Indiana I'd love to see the 46 defense with Carter over the nose and Bennet and Washington covering the Guards...Bosa on the strong side..with Lee and Perry on the weak side and McMillan in the middle with Worley playing the Doug Plank position. I know it won't happen but I believe tOSU has the players for this..High risk high reward Defense.
This gives us 8 in the box...but what do I know...8 and 0 coaching 9 year olds in the 70's isn't much of a resume.

This is pretty much on point.

The Ash philosophy has been a stubbornness to take away anything men from the pass defense. This has effectively stunted teams from throwing on us, but it's leaving us undermanned up front.

The issue is that, as you pointed out, six men in the box is asking an awful lot from your Dline and LBs to be perfect nearly every play or else you're having RBs (real good ones) hit the second line of defense untouched and our safeties on their heels trying to find a way to get them down.

Von Bell has made a number of shoe string tackles to save long runs, but Powell is not a sure tackler and is having a brutal time with his pursuit angles.

Essentially we're asking a Front 6 or Front 7 to fit the run perfectly every snap. I get this against pass heavy teams or balanced attacks, but last two weeks we've faced two running teams with bad QBs.. No idea why we haven't brought an extra man into the box.

Ash is pretty much refusing to give up anything in the pass defense, at the expense of getting chewed up on the ground.

He needs to make an adjustment in my opinion and trust his CBs more.

IiI agree...funny things happen when you trust your guys, ask the offensive line when we played MSU. Our corners can run, they can tackle, and they're playing great and IMO they don't need the help against eitheragainst - ichigan or Wisconsin.

I get we can't shut every team out and nor do I expect it. I only expect us to force teams to adjust to whatwe are doing. If a team can do the same thing over and over with roughly the same results then we need to adjust. At this point we are failing to make teams adjust and with that we are making things awfully easyfor opposing teams to continue doing what they do best. Good news is we are due for the game of the year by the defense bbecause IMO we have not even been close this year

With wisky especially with as much as they like to do the fly sweep and run outside giving that 44 look would be enormous. What we are also forgetting is even when we do go with 7 in the box one of our backers is a converted safety who is rather light.

Everyone is going to call for a plunger game next week but I have seen enough these past few weeks to have a very similar feeling that I did last year. That ttun has a good run stopping defense and if they can run the ball and I suspect they will at this point and im expecting a street fight with us prevailing like 38 to 35. No confidence in our defensive staff to do what it takes at all cost to stop the run and until im proven wrong I have an issue with this.

As you say it is borderline stubborn and to be honest insane.
