2014 Spring Practice Info & Tidbits (starts 3/4)

Well, reality has come, dreams fade, and I can say that day 1 feels "sobering" to me, in safety and cornerback land:
http://www.cleveland.com/osu/index.ssf/2014/03/a_first_look_at_the_buckeyes_t.html

Good to see Tyquan come out of nowhere to be the #2 Viper.

Good to see Michael Thomas up to #1 at wideout.

I guess we start the war from here?
I think Doug Lesmiserables missed Marcus at #2 VIPER. Heck, he'll likely get the starting nod with Spence sitting the first two games.
Bump Lewis down and your #3 line is all RFr: Lewis/Hill/Munger/Sprinkle

WR is amazingly unaccomplished at this point. Spencer is sitting the spring and we know Devin Smith can run a go route. Other than that:
-Thomas, three career catches
-Epitropoulos, one career catch
-Clark, got his FR year back but how well does he recover?
-Corey Smith, no D1 games yet
-Marshall, no D1 games yet
-Dixon, early enrollee
-Greene, no OSU games yet

Somebody better step up. I'm probably the biggest Evan Spencer fan on this board, but the team needs another two pieces this year, to say nothing of the future as Spencer and Smith are seniors.

EDIT: JWinslow, do you have the full roster that was released yesterday? Gerdeman wrote a long ass article detailing exactly who lost weight but didn't take 30 seconds to post the actual list.

so, there is already hand wringing about the secondary going on after one day of spring practice, when one of the guys was dinged and not participating. and there is bemoaning about the depth at cb when arguably two of the more talented corners osu has recruited in a while in damon webb and marshawn lattimore have yet to get on campus. impressive.

This. A thousand times, this.

For the past two years the prevailing opinion on here is that it wasn't the players that were the problem, that it was the coaching. There is a new coach in place. He has been allowed to coach players for ONE DAY so far. What are people expecting at this point?

Two things I noticed watching those DL drills:

1. Working on hands up in the passing lanes. Something only Bosa seemed to employ last year. Haven't seen anyone other than him be proficient at it since Heyward.
2. Steve Miller really looks like WDE...great burst and long wingspan. Hoping he can really put it all together this year. The DL has tremendous depth. Not phony depth like the secondary where there are so many unproven bodies. The DL has a solid rotation of guys who can play. After the suspension you will have Bosa and Spence with Lewis, Miller, Marcus, Sprinkle, Holmes, Frazier and Rock behind them.

Our psychology general (UM) is doing his annual... 'no one is showing me much' ... with sole objective.. to fire up the troops.. works

the QBs were almost perfect yesterday.. yet.. UM was not impressed... LOL.. he wouldn't have been 'impressed' if each QB was 30 for 25

I will start worrying about the back 7 in this defense after Week 3 (if there is cause for concern). There is going to be bumps and bruises along the way with our young guys, the key is improving along the way. We thought our secondary was set last spring and look what happened. Just enjoy the news you get along the way and take it with an industrial size grain of salt. Those first few weeks of practice are always a work in progress and lots of miscommunication and adaptation.

As for the depth chart, the younger guys are as unproven as the underperformers ahead of them at this point and they will have to prove they deserve to be ahead of someone...that won't have happened by the first practice. Conley will have to beat out Reeves. McMillan will have to beat out Grant. Trey will have to beat out Perry. Burrows will have to beat out Powell or earn his spot at Star. Do I think some of these moves will happen? Yes. But it is not a given.

As for the news...glad to hear positive news on Darron Lee at WILL. He has the type of ability and athleticism to fill in admirably in Shazier's void. Hopefully Grant and Perry improve but they have to be well aware of McMillan, Trey, Hubbard, Berger, and Booker behind them. Losing Mitchell was a huge blow no doubt, but hopefully not an insurmountable one. In the secondary, we will need plenty of time to become a cohesive unit and get proper communication going. As bad as the last secondary is and though I think we will be improved from a talent perspective, communication doesn't magically happen in the first practice as if they were veterans. In all likelihood, I think the starting group by Week 1 will be Grant, Conley, Burrows, Powell, and Bell. Reeves is going to have to pick it up big time to keep his spot. Plus I think that Webb, Smith, and Lattimore are all going to push hard for PT.

On offense, not surprised that the QBs were not overly impressive to UFM...give them time. Can't wait to see Barrett live though. Also glad to hear Thomas and Greene looked tough. We need a big WR to step up and also give us another redzone threat. Hoping to hear positives on Marshall and Samuel to give us more playmakers in space. The biggest area I will be watching is of course the OL. The starting unit of Decker, Underwood, Boren, Elflein, and Baldwin is somewhat predictable to start. I think Lisle/Dodson will push Baldwin and Underwood will get pushed by Knox when he comes in but I would not be surprised to see that be the starting unit in Week 1.

Meyer: "Jalin Marshall today - completely different football player than he was a year ago. Why? I put that on the coach."
Meyer said his biggest concern from a depth standpoint is the linebacker position, but he voluntarily said that he was really impressed with true freshman Raekwon McMillan. Meyer also said Darron Lee, who repped with the first team at linebacker, was also very impressive.

+1

Having sat through practices and then read reports about what I watched- when someone drops a pass/misses a tackle/throws an incomplete pass they had a bad say; when someone catches a pass/makes a tackle/completes a pass they had a good day.

Reports on player performances are literally based on one or two memorable plays.

Edit: I should clarify I mean reports from observers of practice. The coaches are a different story- particularly further along when they have a chance to review film.

If Coach Coombs shaved his head, he'd look like Hank's dad from King of the Hill.

And not to mention that the offense always has the advantage in 7 on 7 situations...if they get pads on and consistently perform the same, then there is some cause for concern. I would be more concerned if the offense was not outperforming the defense without pads on.
