2014 Spring Practice Info & Tidbits (starts 3/4)

Well, reality has come, dreams fade, and I can say that day 1 feels "sobering" to me, in safety and cornerback land:

I am not sure what I was expecting, and it is only day 1, but seeing the exact same crew out there is not what I was hoping for. I probably had no reason to believe otherwise, but now I have to face it.

Conley still #2. Reeves still #1. Apple no where to be seen (minor injury). Walk on Nic Serac moved into the #2 position, challenging Reeves.

Miracle fix it all man Cam Burrows still #2 safety. Tyvis Powell and Vonn Bell now the #1 safeties, which is fine.

It just feels kind of deja vu, all over again. This secondary could be good in two years.

Webb, Lattimore, Hooker, and Smith all arrive too late to help much this season, except on special teams.

Good to see Daron Lee making a move on the strong side. Might be really good in 4 years.

Good to see Tyquan come out of nowhere to be the #2 Viper.

Good to see Underwood make a move to #1 RG.

Good to see Carter up to #2 nose guard.

Good to see Michael Thomas up to #1 at wideout.

I guess we start the war from here?

The secondary depth, as of right now, is very disappointing. Plus, on 11W, it sounds like Trey Johnson didn't take much initiative this winter. Hope I'm not a naysayer, but I'm a little worried about this year.

Yeah I won't lie when I heard Mitchell was transferring boy did that let the air out of my balloon as far as what I was hoping to see.

Long ways to go here and it's only day one but hearing dontre Wilson running untouched for a 60+ yard touchdown through the middle of our secondary leaves me a tad concerned.

I think most of us will have to see it to believe it with this defense. Most of the back 7 from last year's wretched defense is back which may not be a positive thing.

In a perfect world we see a ton of bell, burrows, and a young db like smith or Lattimore make a move.

On a side note Bosa is up 10 pounds to 285.... damm! That's just not fair to be that big and still be as quick as he is. If there's ever a lock for someone to be a top 5 pick on this team it's him.

Yeah, the whole secondary is still thin but hopefully will learn their positions better. Better play.
Too soon to give up on Trey, "only one practice'. ....
defensive line will make the secondary look much better.

Not what's being reported on other sights. Rumor has it to do with classroom work. Do some research.

Probably smart to not practice Braxton that much, but even without him there's a ton of talent on offense. So the question becomes: can the offense score more points than the defense will surrender?

As far as the CBs go, I'm willing to reserve judgment until Apple comes back and Conley has a few spring reps under his belt. If at the end of spring practice Reeves is still running with the ones, I'll agree with you that that's a bit sobering.

Safeties really shouldn't be that bit of a surprise--Bell and Powell (especially Powell, who got way more run last season than Bell) both were in front of Burrows on the depth chart all last year. I'd expect Burrows not to be a starting safety but to get a lot of PT in the nickel.

Even with the loss of Roby and Bryant the talent level in the secondary is up. And the coaching has gotten sorted out so really, there's no reason in the world why the secondary should be the disaster it was. Young guys will make occasional mistakes but the learning process is much better and cohesive.
The whole defense will be better and give up less points.
By November, this will be a much better TEAM than last year. But we could lose a couple games.
