2014 Preseason and Regular Season Polls

As a person who was staunchly against a playoff I am very happy to see having one has gotten rid of controversy. But, hey, at least TCU and Baylor settled it on the... never mind.. bad example.

I'm quite happy to think that the Mississippi State loss is the only reason that the only undefeated team is in the top-4. Or are we supposed to believe that Mississippi State would have dropped to 5th?

Baylor is hot garbage. They were exposed last year, and they'll get exposed again. TCU, despite the meltdown, is better than Baylor, and I don't think it's close.
I agree that TCU is better than Baylor, and I think Ohio State is better than either one. Nonetheless, Baylor isn't by any means "hot garbage." They're still a very, very good football team, with an explosive offense and some strong talent on the defensive side of the ball (notice what I did there?).

One of the problems I have with our hyperbolic age is the tendency to call very good teams "crap" or "no good" or words to similar effect. And one of the byproducts of the overweening S-E-C hype by the media is that, when very good teams like LSU, Ole Miss and Mississippi State lose to one another, the tendency is to claim that those teams are "no good." Nonsense. They may not be Kings of the Football World, but claiming they're not very good teams is ridiculous.

:slappy:
LSU & Ole Piss were shut out by Arky...that right there makes them knocks them out of any of the "very good teams" talk... Miss St lived off the rep of beating highly over ranked teams. Ole Miss with Treadwell might be different.. those teams are decent to good... Very good is a huge stretch.. thats like sayin Minnesota/Nebraska are very good teams.. I mean shit Iowa, Maryland, Rutgers all finished 7-5 those must be some very good teams..

Baylor is a good team, very explosive. However their resume is hot garbage. They have beaten on 2 teams with a winning record. They also played an FCS team, lost to a 7-5 team and will not play in a conference title game.

ESPN college football analyst Kirk Herbstreit was on Mike & Mike on Wednesday morning to discuss the latest rankings. He was asked if he thinks the Buckeyes would have a chance to get in if they beat Wisconsin convincingly this weekend.

"Absolutely and I think they hold a key here to this weekend," Herbstreit said. "Of all the games and all the teams that are playing, I think Ohio State is the x-factor. If J.T. Barrett were healthy, I'd be very anxious to see where Ohio State would have been ranked this weekend. All along, I've felt that Ohio State would eventually get the bump into the top four if they won a conference championship and if they ended up beating Wisconsin because it would improve their resume."

FWIW

Nah Les - along with Saban and Malzahn - would be disqualified since his employer has won an NC this century.
Pinkel would also be ineligible because BXII.
The Overachievement Participation award would've gone to Mullen, just edging out Bielema for getting bowl eligible (thank god for Nicholls State!)

I seem to remember a team in 2002 that did the same and things turned out alright for them. By that I mean struggling with inferior opponents.
I'm not going to let anybody get away with comparing that team to this year's FSU. 2002 OSU struggled with inferior teams because the offense wasn't asked to do much of anything. FSU struggles because they play with their heads up their ass for more than half the game.
Plus 2002 OSU had better wins than 2014 FSU has, since the BigTen was actually good that year. OSU finished the regular season that year with three wins against opponents that finished in the top-eleven of the final (pre-bowl) BCS standings. Right now, FSU's best wins are against (currently) #18 Clemson and #21 Louisville.
