2014 Preseason and Regular Season Polls

Their #4 pick doesn't even match their other ratings.
Ole Miss beat #6 Alabama in a close game; lost to #18 LSU
Oregon beat #8 and #22 both by several scores; lost to #12 Arizona

According to the Committee's own rankings, Oregon lost to a better team and beat better teams (by multiple scores).
I found your problem.. you used logic and that's not allowed when computing the awesomeness of the SEC

1. I was glad to see that at least they didn't just mimic the other polls. At least it shows some level of independent thought.

2. It's wayyyyyy to early. I'll be interested to see if they stay married to their rankings or are willing to jump teams even if those above them don't lose.

I didn't watch. Was ND really #10?

That's terrible. I think that's a pretty good team this year.

I wish I could agree, but they're pretty young this year. Even before the season a lot of people were looking towards 2015 as being a possible big bowl season. The suspensions and injuries have hurt the depth chart too. It probably would be different if North Carolina hadn't failed to live up to their preseason hype, same for Michigan. As it stands, ND's most impressive win is against a 3 loss Stanford team right now. Their defense has been surprising though. Brian VanGordor's system will give up some plays here and there, but they also are providing more turnovers and getting off the field more often than under Bob Diaco's 3-4. There's still a chance the Irish could win out, but I'm guessing they'll drop at least one game somewhere between ASU and USC.

The only team ahead of ND on the Playoff poll that I disagree with is Ole Miss. I think Ole Miss got lucky against an Alabama team that was still working with a new QB. The rest of their schedule hasn't been that great when you consider A&M is not who we thought they were, and Boise State isn't under Petersen anymore.

Still a little disgusting that they've got 3 SEC teams in the top 4, there are better teams. Cannibalism will sort that out eventually, but it's still disappointing that the playoff committee is setting up a regional championship by the looks of it.

Yeap, ND was 10

MS St

TCU
MSU
KSU
ND
Georgia
Arizona
Baylor
ASU
Nebraska
Ohio State
Utah
---- 2 loss teams ----
OU
LSU
WVU
Clemson

To be honest, I'm not even slightly interested in seeing post-season rematches. We already know FSU is better than ND AFAIC.
Whether it's Ohio State - Michigan, Alabama - LSU, or FSU - ND

So here is what we know.

They're not running a predictive model, they're simply running a ranking system.

Ole Miss has a schedule remaining that, being ranked #4 they can lose a game and stay in it and other SEC West teams can beat them and gain justifiable leaps into the top 3. It is only the first week, so we don't know what kind of impact wins and losses will have, but just like the AP polls the initial positions create the narrative for each win & loss down the road. The next 2 weeks will go a LONG way in defining the teams truly in the conversation.

What a small committee does allow for is large leaps and drops based on perception. No aggregate voting to get in the way.

I don't think Ole Miss should have been in the top 6 but we'll find out real quick against Auburn this weekend...I would've put Oregon in the #4 spot instead. As for Ohio State at #16...I cannot really fight it too much. The loss to VT is incredibly damning with the way they have played since beating us (at home and at night). Yes, we seem to be a very different team but you just can't dismiss it either. And it's not like they put any two loss teams ahead of us either. Plus the close game against PSU had to be fresh in everyone's minds. My only caveat would be that *if* we beat MSU at their place, the committee better give us credit for the win and move us up accordingly. However, being so far back seems to bode badly for us...I have a sneaking suspicion that a two-loss SEC team could easily be placed ahead of us.

Yep, I can't see it gang. Even winning out we will be on the outside looking in. They have legitimately placed enough SEC teams in the top 10 to push a minimum of 2 teams into the playoff. Until they start playing games at a campus stadium for the playoffs, it's still totally rigged away from teams not located in the south.
