2014 Offense Discussion

Come on now, he's an average runner at best. My post wasn't intended to criticize Barrett, but the playcalling. We aren't getting the ball in the hands of all these guys we recruited.

If you think that he had 17 designed runs called for him then you weren't watching Ohio State play Virginia Tech last night. The vast majority of those 17 runs were Barrett running for his life because the pass protection broke down.

We already are predictable. 5 wides quick routs get rid of that ball. When the D spreads out to compensate for the wide outs, JT will be very dangerous running that ball.

To RBs in there is pointless without run blocking.
First spread that D, then run it.

Something something get the ball to your playmakers something something in space.....
We've got a couple of really good TE's that need to be figured into the hot reads and the passing game as a whole. We can use them without going crazy with the personnel and formations.
Geez next thing you'll be talking about getting the QB under center and utilizing an I formation at times....

Lets get marcelys jones in at one of those starting guard spots. Let him play left guard next to our 6-7 three hundred plus pound left tackle taylor decker.

Then we could run that ball, marcelys jones is to big and strong to be on the bench.

Marcelys was in street clothes last night, so not sure this is feasible.

The idea that we should willy-nilly start untested freshmen in positions of weakness ... isn't a good one. I think Ed Warriner has a much better idea of how to construct an effective offensive line than any of us here.

We need to go 5 wide quick routs, that will make it hard for teams to blitz us without getting burned. When we get an offensive flow going and the deffense stops blitzing and spreads out to cover the pass, then mix the run in there.

*looks at username*

*not sure if parody account*

The WRs were bad last night. The answer is not to put more of them on the field.

Do we really want to see more of the receivers who have been unable to beat out the guys we saw last night?

I do believe our young receivers will get better. Not quite sure, based on what we saw last night, why true senior Corey Smith has received so much hype. He doesn't appear to use proper technique to catch a pass. Or does JT throw a pass that's especially hard to catch? If so, why did he complete 12 of 15 the week before?

I'm a bit confused.

Alabama got a freshmen that is about the same size as marcelys and they are starting him, why cant we?

The guys we got out there are getting there behinds handed to them anyway.

What IS the answer then.
Spreading the D out more and hitting those wide outs on short routs to get them in the game couldnt have hurt.

Well for starters spreading out your formation even further doesn't cause them to spread out their defense. Execution causes them to spread out their defense. The Buckeyes were already one-one-one on the edges and they couldn't make them pay for it. They already had the personnel to accomplish what they needed to. They have to recognize the blitz and find a hot receiver. They have throw and catch with timing and precision.
