2014 Offense Discussion

This was the first game I can remember (since maybe the Nebraska nighttime wood-shedding and Kent State doesn't count) where it didn't seem like we were struggling with what play to call. I have felt like we've suffered from the Cheesecake Factory menu conundrum . The up-tempo seems good for JT and Herman other than the false starts. We were able to string plays together in fairly elegant and productive fashion; what my first grade teacher termed "not just calling words" when reading aloud.

Love, love, LOVE the Cheesecake Factory reference. I've been in the hospitality industry for most of my life. (I'm crazy, what can I say?) And Cheesecake's menu has to be the most bloated, disjointed, poorly-executed thing in the industry. I still wonder why they're as popular as they are. Marketing, I guess. Trim that thing by 50% at least, and BE EXCELLENT at what you do. Don't do 300 things half-assed. Do 30 things to perfection, and modify accordingly.

Amazing what blowing people out does for the opinion of Tom Herman!

It's not the score that determines peoples thoughts of Herman (or should), it's how it happens.

Starting against Cinci he was clear in his focus, pounded the run game, stopped trying to run too much option, changed tempo, and kept his curveballs to more basic and attainable sets, i.e. Marshall at wildcat. That continued to Maryland with some more solid balance throughout.

We have seen what this offense can do with a) Herman reigning himself in, and b) a quickly improving OL.

Herman is far from perfect, but an oline that isn't a sieve makes the biggest difference.

It's not all Herman. Urban has a final say in play calls. But you have to see a functioning offensive line to get a feel of "who you are". What you're good at.
Just look at scUM on offense. They have no sense of "who they are" because; 1. the offensive line sucks. 2. the coaching sucks.

How sad everyone will be when we go against a coaching staff that has a pulse. If we get down inside the 15/10 against MSU, with the game on the line, I do not have any confidence in Tom Herman's play calling.

The goaline zone read offense will cost us a game. Mark it down.
Against MSU, we might get held in a goal line situation regardless of the play call. That defense is good. But since your mind is made up, it's going to be all Herman's fault if we don't succeed.

@matcar What has Herman showed you, in a big game, that gives you confidence he will put the offense in a position to succeed when it's needed most? Would that be running Braxton, instead of Hyde, twice when you *need* two-yards last December in Indy? His halftime adjustments against VT this fall?

I want to buy in. I do. I'm a Buckeye, man. Herman is a great recruiter, no doubt, and I don't think he is a terrible O-coordinator, but I don't think he is all that great in the clutch, either. Nor is he God's gift to the Mensa club.

My concerns, to further the thread, for this offense is solely centered around in-game adjustments and the goal line offense. I would prefer, moving someone like Hubbard (who Urban promises the public will get on the field) to FB, and giving EZE a lead blocker. Hell, throw Rod Smith or Dunn back there even, I am sure they would love to see the field. A few years ago, we would motion the TE into the backfield and have him lead the way - where has that gone?

The zone read, on the 5, with Barrett and EZE, will not win the game in East Lansing this November if it comes down to it. Yes, my mind is made up on that. Just like it was that Troy Smith is better than Zwick and that WVU's 3-3-5 defense won't work in the B1G.

What if Herman is setting MSU up with these zone reads in the RZ, against teams we have easily handled?
I have thought of that - I can't wait until we pull back on the speed option and hit Michael Thomas deep on a double-move too. I will be the first one to say I'm wrong Leroy if that's the case! I hope you are right. Throw the kitchen sink at Dantonio/Narduzzi and have wrinkles for everyone else to worry about/play our options honest.
