2014 FIFA World Cup - Brazil

Ultra nationalism? Ok. It's not ultra nationalism to root for the country in which you were fortunate enough to be born. But my comment wasn't really about rooting for someone else. It's about some asshole that spent three weeks on vacation in Spain and roots against their home country because those three weeks...well, unless you've been to Spain, you can't really understand.

Basically, I'm talking about some pretentious assfucks on twitter that use the world foosball tournament to remind everyone they're worldy. Unlike the rest of us slobbering Americans that probably watch NASCAR.

Yes, ultra nationalism. Since I am worldly enough to have spent time in about 13 countries -- 4 of them for 6 months or more -- and most of them shitholes... I feel quite comfortable saying that 99% of the people that mindlessly wave flags and such are nothing more than chicken hawks -- Dems and Repubs both.
As a result, I don't feel obligated to root for an asshole like Sean White just because we were born in the same country. Nor do I feel obligated to root for US NT in soccer when I find them utterly boring and cynical. I mean, good for them, it worked and got them out of the groups ... but... meh.
As far as what I owe the US... I served two tours in the dirt. Fuck that noise. I've done my time. What have you done for the country to talk shit?

Creedance Clearwater Revival sums it up as far as I'm concerned

Yes, but Argentina has the opportunity to meet the same fate, which for the time being is probably some consolation for Brazil.

If they tick to the plan of Play Defense and hope Higuain or Messi can get them 1 against Germany... they're in trouble. I didn't get to watch yesterday's match in real time, and it was brutal fast forwarded, but if the Argentina that played Begium or Switzerland show up, you better truck in some extra beer early to Brandenburg Gate.

Ehh, I wasn't impressed with them in either of those matches.
Without Di Maria, I have a hard time seeing them being even that effective up front. Even though I thought they had the better chances against Netherlands, it was still pretty woeful and the absence of Di Maria was very evident.
It's basically all on Messi to create magic while being marked by half the German team. He's Messi... so... it's still possible.
But this is shaping up to be a WC about individual brilliance vs. team effort. I'm hoping team effort wins; but won't feel bad as Messi is an awesome guy.

Bets are live for the third place match and the final. For the final there is an additonal bet for Man of the Match. This bet will pay only for the player that is named the official FIFA MotM. If the award is won by a player not included in the betting options, the bet will be settled with no payout.

Need ALL of you guys to add input on this one. I stand to make a ton of $$ if Argentina wins and Muller doesn't score a goal in the finals. Sad thing is I think Germany will win but "wavering" on a backup bet for golden boot since I have $2500 at 60/1 for Muller NOT to score.

Gimme your predictions:

Who Wins?
Does Muller Score?

Thanks for any insight, and thanks to JLB for making me actually learn to appreciate this game called "futbol"

Peace

Going to try to enjoy ABC/ESPN's final broadcast Sunday.

Somewhat terrified of what FOX will put forth in 2018 and beyond (really starting in 2015 w/ the Women's World Cup). Surprisingly, both ESPN's low point for the World Cup (2006) and current FOX involve Eric Wynalda.

Still believe ESPN's strongest production is its World Cup and Euro coverage (less trolling and monorail salesmen).

Don't cry for me, Argentina. I'm rooting for the Germans.

Argentina v Netherlands, the game that took the joy out of World Cup 2014. The Argentinians just took the air out of the game

I'm not enough of a fan to be sure, but I'm enjoying this WC much more than the previous two. I believe I'm seeing much less flopping, perhaps because the French and the Italians are out? The camera work seems better and I'm seeing a good deal more contact, a much rougher game than I gave it credit for in the past.
