2014 College Football Playoff Open Thread

I am glad we made the first playoff. Giddy, in fact, and think that the right teams were selected. I honestly think we can win it all, albeit by much closer margins than what we saw last night. So proud of this team, regardless of what happens from here on out.

With that said, I don't like the way this process has worked at all. Here is my far-fetched plan aimed at removing subjectivity, the potential for bribery/collusion, the media, and all other bullshit from the process of determining a true national champ:

1. Consolidate the 10 FBS conferences into 8 conferences, the same number of teams in my new playoff system.
2. Tell ND and other independents to suck it up and join a conference or get the fuck out.
3. Mandate conference championship games.
4. Institute an 8-team playoff consisting only of conference champs. No committees. No bullshit. ALL FBS conferences/schools have a shot. Win your conference and you're in. Fail to win your conference and go to the Meineke Car Care Bowl or stay home.
5. Limit polls to the purpose of determining playoff seeding and who plays who in the non-playoff bowls.

I imagine that the major criticism from the average football fan would be that some really, really good 1- and 2-loss teams from major conferences would be left out. And that would be a correct assumption, but the world would have to deal with it.

It would never happen because of $, but it should. All FBS teams should have a shot, and who gets a shot should not be determined by biased human beings. What will probably happen, however, is an 8-team playoff that remains subjective and opinion-based. It will probably happen quite soon. It will be better than four teams (and far better than the BCS), but it will reman unfair.

My two cents.

Fucking Art Briles just called out the committee for not having a "southern voice" on the committee after Manning left and having Condoleezza Rice on the committee. Should've just wore his Klan garb at the podium...
I completely disagree with what Briles said, how he said it, and the context in which it was said.

With that being said, if I were a Baylor fan, I'd lift up Art Briles as the kind of advocate (and damn good coach) I want at my school for as long as we can keep him.

Briles is a guy I look at kind of like I looked at Urban Meyer when he was at Florida -- an abrasive a-hole.

It's just that now, Urbs is OUR abrasive a-hole. And that makes all the difference.

Exactly. The guy was just going to bat for his program, doing the same thing I'd expect our coach to do. Other than losing to West Virginia, it's not really his fault that the argument he had to make was such a shitty one.

If the Big XII wants more consideration drop the "one true champion" nonsense (that only made them look like fools), add BYU & Boise State, and set up a championship game like the rest of us. The divisional formats are far from ideal but making your top team win one more battle on a national stage can elevate their profile. Ohio State proved that conclusively last night.
I'd think Cincinnati would be overjoyed to join the Big XII-II, and they'd actually probably increase the average scholastic ranking of the conference. (As would BYU.) And the overall athletic program performance at Cincy isn't all that far below what the rest of the conference displays.

Don't think Boycee would have that scholastic impact.

Part of the problem for the Big XII is that there is nobody for them to add that will not result in a net decrease of each team's share of the overall revenue. Therefore, at the very least they need to focus on adding schools that minimize the haircut that each existing Big XII program is going to take for this. For that reason (among many others) I don't think Boise is a viable candidate. Not that UC would move the needle all that much, but they wouldn't be as big of an albatross as most other options.

UCF is an interesting school to me. Their entire profile seems like it would make them a natural fit. While it would undoubtedly be a short term boost for that program though, they might be better off playing the long game and waiting for the power conferences to go to 16. They'd be perfect for the ACC.

Would 4 feel "right" if the Buckeyes were 5th?

I would prefer a larger field. Not as large as other levels of college football because the bowls aren't going away, but 8 teams has been my preference. All this season did was confirm that opinion because all one-loss teams from the major conferences would've been included. Likely line up would've been:

Alabama-Sparty
Oregon-Miss State
FSU-TCU
Ohio State-Baylor
Yeah, I'd still like 4 even if the Buckeyes got stiffed. Don't like the idea of teams like Sparty and Miss St slipping in because they didn't play in a conf championship game or even win their division. Sure, a field of 4 will leave out "deserving" teams most years, but I think it strikes the right balance. This system encourages strong OOC scheduling and preserves the importance of the regular season. It also gives us back New Year's Day as a great day of football from start to finish. I'm more pleased than I could have imagined.
