2014 Bowl Games Open Thread

Who said anything about taking a whipping from anyone?

How about going into these hostile environs and pissing in everyone's wheaties?

I'm not sure if you read that as implying a game score or something... but basically you seem to be saying we should just stfu because the system is corrupt and we can't change it.
That's not really a compelling argument in my imo.

Hey if you want to swing at windmills, be my guest. Just don't get pissy when someone joins the conversation to say it's not going to change anytime soon.

So what championships have been won in the Idaho noonegivesafuck Bowl? Or the Music City bowl? Or how about the Heart of Dallas bowl? If you aren't playing for championships, it's a meaningless exhibition where the players can gain "swag", gift certificates and play in front of 15,000 people....

AS for the rest of it...wall of text is great and all, it still doesn't change the reality of the situation one iota.
Mike, Just because a bowl isn't significant to you doesn't make it insignificant to TV, fans of other teams, the C of C of the hosting state/city/sponsor or people like me who prefer the itdon'tmakeashit Bowl to Judge Judy/Faith/Ralph, Dr. Phil or Oprah.

Likewise, your love for the status quo doesn't change the facts in a wall of data that goes against the status quo.

Where have I stated I 'love' the status quo? Please show me the quote. I'd love to see it.

In fact, if I wanted too (or had a need to do so) I could go back and find comments from me saying this entire system a sick joke and have maintained that stance since the beginning.

And it is a sick joke. And, like it or not, it will remain so.

scUM/Ohio State/Ped State/Nebraska show up for their teams. The rest don't. Case in point - until Ohio State played Sparty, they hadn't come close to capacity at Lucas Oil Stadium. Last year they got 66,000 and this year they got 62,000. Supposedly Lucas Oil can seat up to 70K, so it may not have totally sold out yet, depending on the set up.
The measuring stick isn't selling out. It is matching the "Michigan spring game during a sleet storm" esque crowd found at many of these bowls.

The two most successful conferences historically in bowl season? SEC and PAC. Just so happen to be the two conferences that hardly leave their own footprint for bowl games.

Bowl games were always about tourism so it's natural they're going to be in warm destinations. They were never intended to crown a champion. As recently as the 80s we never talked about national champions. That was just something that happened in a poll at the end of the season. All we ever talked about was the Rose Bowl - winning the Big Ten and going to Pasadena.

It's only been in the last couple decades where it all became about the "NC", and fans started keeping track of conference performance. That's 24 hour sports networks and the internet. There wasn't any big debate about that shit 30 years ago - everything was regional. Now everything is national, everything is televised, and everything is analyzed to death.

The BCS and now the playoff were only born to appease the masses. The people running the sport didn't care about it. If they did, they would've invented it decades ago. It's not like they've split the atom by figuring out how to vote 2-4 teams into a championship. It was never about a championship until a generation ago. So now that they're doing a championship they aren't going to scrap the tried and true play the games in warm venues formula that has worked for decades.

The B1G will always be at a disadvantage in that regard. Get used to it.
