Bowl games were always about tourism so it's natural they're going to be in warm destinations. They were never intended to crown a champion. As recently as the 80s we never talked about national champions. That was just something that happened in a poll at the end of the season. All we ever talked about was the Rose Bowl - winning the Big Ten and going to Pasadena.
It's only been in the last couple decades where it all became about the "NC", and fans started keeping track of conference performance. That's 24 hour sports networks and the internet. There wasn't any big debate about that [Mark May] 30 years ago - everything was regional. Now everything is national, everything is televised, and everything is analyzed to death.
The BCS and now the playoff were only born to appease the masses. The people running the sport didn't care about it. If they did, they would've invented it decades ago. It's not like they've split the atom by figuring out how to vote 2-4 teams into a championship. It was never about a championship until a generation ago. So now that they're doing a championship they aren't going to scrap the tried and true play the games in warm venues formula that has worked for decades.
