2014 Bowl Games Open Thread

Heart of Dallas is the same exact site as the Cotton Bowl (and this year's Final)
I'm not really sure what point is being made though. Seems like most of us are talking about Playoff Sites, but people keep trying to make it about the Smurfturf Bowl to change the subject ?

Edit - Actually I'm mistaken. I forgot Cotton Bowl Game switched to Jerry's Paradise; while the Cotton Bowl Stadium retains the Heart of Dallas bowl game.
Still, in terms of any travel/tickets/etc. I don't see the difference between 2 stadiums... seems more like we're just propping up their archaic White Elephant stadium with Midwestern tourism money.

That's about 4-10x too generous in many cases, and I'd submit that midwestern fans could outpace a handful of those ticket sales if they were in Indy or Chicago.

Maybe - if the match-up is right. The ONLY way this ever changes is if the FBS adopts the FCS and lower playoff system. Since that's never going to happen, I don't know why this really comes up anymore.

Also, it's clear the powers that be want to keep the playoff sites co-located with the traditional bowl games. Delaney isn't powerful enough to alter the math by himself and why should the ACC/Pac12/SECSECSEC/Big12 acquiesce to the B1G? The answer is there is no reason to do so, either politically or monetarily. And none of it is going to change anytime soon. The only people really complaining about it that I've found are on Buckeyeplanet. BP is awesome and all, but that is slightly Quixotic.

What I'm trying to say is that the powers that set up this stupid failure of a playoff are doing it in conjunction with the established bowl groups.

Also, bowls like the bowl in Detroit/Boise/Nashville/Memphis/wherever are meaningless.

So what championships have been won in the Idaho noonegivesafuck Bowl? Or the Music City bowl? Or how about the Heart of Dallas bowl? If you aren't playing for championships, it's a meaningless exhibition where the players can gain "swag", gift certificates and play in front of 15,000 people...
As well as giving the coaching staffs an extra 15+ practices with their teams to prepare, in part, for the following season.

If you don't want to watch the games, nobody is holding a Glock to your head forcing you to. I'm completely fed up with the stupid meme that "there are too many bowl games." It's like somebody who doesn't like red meat saying there are too many steaks at the restaurant.

I think everyone is aware of that. They're the same powers that resisted BCS, and then resisted Playoffs...
It doesn't seem like a good argument against having Playoff games in more than just the Bible Belt, Cali, and Arizona though...

There are too many bowl games. Sorry if you don't like the reality of it. 6-6 teams shouldn't be rewarded with a bowl game. Neither should teams that need to schedule FCS teams to get to 6 wins.

In a sport where the goal is a national championship, anything that doesn't put you into contention for it is just another exhibition.

Is there a reason we can't keep Exhibition Games for Tourism?
While having playoff games actually be "neutral" or spread out more evenly?

That's because it's not an argument for it. It's an argument against having an argument about it, because it's not going to change just because it disadvantages 1 of the 5 power conferences.

Is it cynical? You betcha. But until the bowls are completely ditched, the NCAA takes over the D1-A level championship in football, nothing is going to change and we're stuck with the chore of going to warmer climates over the holidays for bowls.....

So the fuck what? Some of us like exhibitions. If you don't like it, don't turn on your television, Church Lady. Don't try and ruin it for those of us who enjoy the season.

Shit, if there weren't so got-dam many football games on I might actually have to get some work done.

The B1G turns up for their team, not great matchups. It's the reason the BTN is so successful despite only having 1-2 top teams per year, if that.

There are plenty of midwesterners that complain about the corrupt bowl system.

With few exceptions, I haven't been. My pick sets reflect that too. There are still too many damn football games - matchups that pit superpowers like BGSU and South Alabama are all the rage I guess :slappy:

[Mark May], if there weren't so got-dam many football games on I might actually have to get some work done.

Work? What's that.

Nobody should read what I've said above as meaning I don't want to see playoff games in places like Lucas Oil Stadium. I think Indianapolis has proven itself as an excellent place to hold big-time sporting events. And it would be a good idea to make the location of the playoff games more neutral. Certainly the current system favors the warm-weather teams, no question about that.

3 big 10 teams have FCS defenses.

I think there are too many Bowls. I didn't start watching them until the 27th. I do like to watch some of the SEC teams play "big" OOC conference games, but a lot of teams don't really look motivated for these exhibition games. Just guys trying to catch they eye of NFL scouts. I do like bowl games for them. It gives them one more game against a semi quality/quality team to show their ability.

scUM/Ohio State/Ped State/Nebraska show up for their teams. The rest don't. Case in point - until Ohio State played Sparty, they hadn't come close to capacity at Lucas Oil Stadium. Last year they got 66,000 and this year they got 62,000. Supposedly Lucas Oil can seat up to 70K, so it may not have totally sold out yet, depending on the set up.
