2013 tOSU Offense Discussion

After watching the buffalo and baylor game it's apparent to me that this offense still has strides to be made. Baylor hung 54 points on them in the 1st half and Mack was never a factor. We don't have a Lache Seastrunk on our team and no one else does either. But we have a lot of dangerous weapons on offense, we just need to match tempo's with Oregon and baylor. We aren't going to match either game tempo's this year but it doesn't hurt to strive toward the number of offensive plays they get a game.

The one thing I notice about every play is our offense gets to the line and then, the QB claps once then looks at the sidelines for a few seconds. It seems like the lineman often are in their stance for a long time before the ball is finally snapped. Could be why Hall had so many penalties. They need to get to the line and go. Just my 2 cents.

I understand that, but then maybe the oline should'nt be down in their stance the whole time then. The longer you sit in your stance the more likely you are to false start and the like. Just sayin.

I have never been a fan of the up-tempo offense that hurries to the line and then has to check with the sideline for the play. I do agree that having the O-line in their stance that long is just asking for trouble. Also, while I did not track the plays it appears that the O-line would get in their stance and then their stance would change if the call was changed (ie, pre call they were in a stance with their weight out over the hand and then the changed call would come in and they would then sit back and pull their weight off their hand). This could be leading to tipping the play call.

I agree that there is something missing from this offense. It is hard to really justify that based on the outcomes (41 PPG is not bad!) but the entire offense seems to bog down at times. I think this is due to a few items. 1) Injuries in both games will put a cramp in the works (sorry, couldn't resist). 2) I think missing Hyde is a bigger loss than most of us wanted to admit. Hall is nice but he does not seem to break any tackles. and 3) we are just expecting too much.

I have seen it said that this past weekend was remincient of Tresselball. I could not disagree more. I think the second half was all about getting the game done without anymore injuries. Guiten needed the reps for those that are saying if UM was worried about getting KG hurt. Knee injuries are problematic for someone that relies on those legs for cuts and jukes. KG might be the man for a while and he needs reps. He shows he knows where the ball goes and his reads are better than Miller in some ways but his passes gave no chance for YAC.

Lastly, maybe this is just me but does it bother anyone else that we no longer hand the ball to the officials? After being tackled or scoring it seems the ball just gets tossed aside. This is a very minor deal but it was always something that showed respect for the game in my eyes. Part of acting like you have been there before maybe. Hand the ball to the official, celebrate with your teammates. The way it is now we are just a few steps away from the Denver situation from Thursday night (dropping the ball before even scoring to start celebrating).

I could never see the WR screen again and be very happy. We don't block it well. I would have liked to have seen Rod get some more caries last week. I want to see him pounding it, especially on the inside hand off, and taking some shots to ensure he has shaken off the fumbling blues.

My Friends from Illinois who watch tOSU more for entertainment than the W_L want to know why Urban goes into turtle mode after a 21 pt lead..they can't believe this is the SEC UFM. I just laugh and tell them its a kindler gentler UFM. Bollman has the Dave and Urban has the Bubble screen. I can't wait till we get the Mercedes Offense out and put the Camry away.

I honestly believe that "Turtle Mode" is working on things that Urban wants to do to improve the team. As much as I hate the bubble/WR screen I see it has to do with working on WR blocking skills. I also anticipate seeing additional buildout scenarios as the weeks progress. tI do keep waiting for some thunder and lightning backfield. I would have loved to have seen both RS and Hall or Desoto in their at tje same time.

We've scored 40, and 42 pts, and not really shown anything. Just going through basic packages. I really think we'll see a few more things in the Cal game, but the Wisky game is where we really see what the teams been working on all summer/fall. I also think the addition of Hyde, will really open up the edges, as teams dont have to respect Hall between the tackles.

Half the things we're doing now are for strategic purposes before the meat of our schedule, i.e. making teams like Wisconsin, scUM, NW, game plan for them when we won't be using them nearly as much. Once Hyde gets back and the B1G schedule starts I expect to see an altered offense from what we're seeing in this pre-conf time. I think Urb has said it in the past, you want to give those looks now and make teams spend that 15 minutes in practice focused on it because they're not focusing on other areas.

Yeah, I disagree as well. It seemed like the staff really wanted the backups to get some real game reps. Obviously, it wasn't worth forcing Braxton back into the game and possibly making the injury worse. Overall, this real game experience will help these backups as they eventually become starters or are forced to fill in for a bigger game in the future. I would agree that Kenny seems to make some pretty good decisions with the ball on certain read plays, but his arm strength and overall athleticism is where he lacks compared to Braxton. It seems like the staff is hesitant to let Kenny throw deep balls. When he does, they're either fine (like the TD passes) or pretty far off (like the interception) it seems.

Coach Warinner also said he loves to get his backups in the game whenever possible, and that is going to be very useful when four of our OL starters need to be replaced after this season. We need these backups to be ready to go for the 2014 season. Obviously, Boren has played significant time so far, although I haven't seen others quite as consistently. Does anybody know what other backup O Linemen got PT in the SDSU game?

I agree, get as many guys that are ready, as many game time reps as they can. Especially in these early games that are OOC. Less kids will have the "deer in headlights" look in games when they see the field. I especially like seeing the RBs, WRs, D line, and DBs getting a lot of reps. Not sure who played on the 2nd team on the o line, but they definitely need reps most of all due to their departures.

If you re-watch the game I believe Linsey was out most of the 2nd half and definitely the 4th Quarter. Just like against the Buff's point production went down significantly after he left the game. Amazing how one person can make such a difference.
