2013 Freshman with Biggest Impact

Bosa and Wilson should be impact players as they were highly rated; Cameron is the great find by the coaches IMHO.

Just because you're highly rated doesn't mean that you'll make much impact in their 1st year, or even throughout their osu career( thinking of Pittsburgh brown, Jamie wood, Jt Moore, Justin Zwick, etienne Sabino, etc)
I wish recruiting wasn't such a crap shoot sometimes.

BUMP.

Half way through the season. Clearly Bosa takes the award so far as having the biggest impact on the game. Not counting him, who makes the most impact for the second half of the season? The candidates seem to be: DeSoto, Zeke, Hill, and Bell. I don't think Trey, Conley, or Eli will get enough minutes to be in the running, but maybe.

I think the reason Bosa made the most impact is because he was needed on the field. If our LB corps NEEDED the help, then Trey or Mitchell would have made the most impact. The LBs are doing, somewhat surprisingly, well. With that said, I think DeSoto and Zeke will get some good playing time, but they won't make the most impact because we are SO deep and RB and have some really talented playmakers. Wilson adds a level to the running game, but Hall (when healthy) and Miller (when he wants to) can also add that aspect, as well as Corey Brown. I would like to see Wilson get some carries, but I would rather see the seniors get more carries in those type of roles. I feel if it's close between an underclassman and a senior, we owe it to the senior to give them the nod. They deserve the shot at the NFL, not to mention it helps our recruiting to have players drafted. Unless of course, the freshman blows out the seniors, which I don't think he does.

I think right now it's Bell's to lose. IF he can get some playing time in a serious game AND play as well as the current starters, THEN he will make the most impact as a freshman and cement a spot in the rotation.

I think Bosa is playing the most because he is the most talented. He still had Marcus, Miller, etc. in front of him on the DL rotation coming in and those guys aren't chumps at all. He is still rotating in and making a huge impact even with Washington back. He is just so good you can't keep him off the field. IMO I think the LB corps needs plenty of help...aside from Shazier we have been average, maybe slightly above average. I actually think Bosa had more depth to overcome then either of Mitchell and Trey Johnson.

As for recruiting crapshoots...Dontre and Bosa were highly ranked and performing big. Plus Bell is in line for big PT...those were 3 of our more highly ranked guys from '13. Hill and Zeke also were highly ranked and playing quite a bit and performing well. I understand the comment was made in the context of guys playing their first year and not ending up having the best careers. But those examples didn't perform all that well early on. Dontre and Bosa are lights out and will only get better barring injury.

As for the rest of the '13 class...there is a ton, ton, TON of talent but we are performing too well in many areas for them to get in. Jalin and Clark are going to tear it up but our WRs are playing great right now. With the departure of Philly and Fields, there will be much more PT available. Our OL has been outstanding and thankfully injury free, so Price and Lisle get the redshirt. Our corners aren't going to get supplanted but when Roby leaves, I think all of Apple, Burrows, and Conley will be ready to play big time. I could go on for awhile and say that there are many in the '13 class that I am super high on, so agreed on that point. However, I think the most talented guys are playing right now...our DL and especially RB are pretty stacked but Dontre and Joey are just too good to hold back.

No matter how it comes into play, next man up is a reality at every school, and Cam Burrows was the beneficiary of that versus Iowa. He was in on some 3rd-long 3-2-6 packages, including Powell's INT.

Other updates:
- Michael Hill is dressing but apparently hurt (per Meyer's 21OCT press conference), he can get a RS if they shut him down (three GP).
- Darron Lee was in street clothes, haven't read anything on his status but he's under the minimum games as well (three GP).
- Jalin Marshall, Donovan Munger, Tracy Sprinkle and Jayme Thompson are also not suiting up.

Here's an unofficial count of the freshmen who've clocked minutes:
1. DB Vonn Bell
2. DL Joey Bosa
3. DB Cam Burrows
4. WR James Clark
5. RB Zeke Elliott
6. DL Michael Hill
7. LB Trey Johnson
8. P Cam Johnston
9. LB Darron Lee
10. H Dontre Wilson

Lots of talent with full eligibility left, especially if Clark/Hill/Lee all get this year back due to injury.

Likely Redshirts:
1. DB Eli Apple
2. QB J.T. Barrett
3. TE Marcus Baugh
4. DB Gareon Conley
5. DL Tyquan Lewis
6. OL Evan Lisle
7. WR Jalin Marshall
8. LB Mike Mitchell
9. DL Donovan Munger
10. OL Billy Price
11. DL Tracy Sprinkle
12. S Jayme Thompson
13. LB Chris Worley

If this is true, then it is very similar to Gardner's redshirt (he played as a freshman but got hurt, yet still dressed making the redshirt feel fraudulent). If that is the case, I cannot feel this way anymore and that's unfair to me as a fan. Therefore I'm afraid he'll just have to play a few plays against Purdue.

It is great to see how much talent is getting bankrolled. These players will benefit. tOSU will benefit.

It is also good to see Cam Burrows in. By bowl season, he could be a big part of better pass protection. (or not)

I do. I think he'll grade out at like a 2nd or 3rd round talent and declare for the draft.
I think that would be a huge mistake on his part especially if the top redshirt sophomores, come out but I think he would have sense enough not to declare if all those guys do come out.. I also do not think he is second-round material and would benefit greatly from another season.

Yeah I don't know. I think Braxton wants to do what's best for him and his family and if the NFL thinks he's good enough to get drafted in one of the 1st three rounds, which I think is very possible, I'm not sure coming back is the best option for him. If I had a kid, I'd be looking to cash in as well. Especially if this season turns into the magical one we're hoping for. Factor in a new offensive line, and I'm just not sure we'll be easily able to have the same offensive success. Heck, we might even be getting a new OC next year.

Either way, I think JT Barrett needs to be ready, because even if Braxton comes back for another year, Kenny Guiton won't be here anymore.

He would need to play a lot better for the rest of the season than he has so far IMO. If a bunch of the RS Sophs declare I don't see Brax going before the 4th round. Honestly I don't seem him transitioning well to an NFL offense.

Where would Brax fit in this list? How many QB's will be drafted in the first 3 rounds?

Sorry, but Braxton isn't anywhere close to being drafted in the first 4 rounds, at least not at QB. He's not even a heisman consideration anymore. A few weeks ago he was almost benched for a guy that will probably never sniff an nfl roster past the practice squad. Braxton most certainly needs another year of college. Mariotta, bridgewater, manziel, mccarron, Boyd and winston are all much better QBs and thats just off the top of my head. And honestly that can only benefit Barrett because it doesn't force him into the starting lineup, he can settle in after being groomed by Braxton. Almost like the ideal situation that we all would've wanted for a transition between Pryor and Braxton. And I'd much rather have Barrett have a healthy season as a backup, rather than him coming off of an injury and then being thrust into the starting lineup. Hell have plenty of time, with a number of weapons to aid him
