Ohio High School State Championship= tie.

#OHSAA Hockey: For player safety, Northview and St. Ignatius agree to end title game tied 1-1 after 7OT. Teams declared co-state champs

I just saw the video on the sports center front page. Wow. Did you see the disappointed look on the faces of those kids when the administrators of both schools decided to pull the plug on them after 7 OT's? They should have let those kids play all night long until someone scored a goal. If you are going to have dumb rules that don't allow penalty shootouts after a certain amount of OT's then let them play it out.

Yeah, what's the deal with no penalty shootout? Especially, like you said mendensa, after a certain amount of OT's.

Statement from Ohio High School Athletic Association Regarding Ice Hockey State Championship Game

By mutual agreement of the head coaches, school administrators and OHSAA administrators, today’s ice hockey state championship game at Nationwide Arena was ended after seven overtime periods. The game shall be recorded as a 1-1 tie and Sylvania Northview and Cleveland St. Ignatius shall be declared co-state champions.
After the seventh overtime, the head coaches, school athletic administrators and OHSAA administrators had a lengthy discussion. Many players on both teams were seriously fatigued and neither coach or school administrator objected to ending the game before the eighth overtime began.
By national rule, there is no shootout procedure in high school hockey.
While the decision is being questioned by fans, the OHSAA commends the coaches and school athletic administrators in reaching this decision together without conflict.
This is an opportunity to show that wins and losses, even in a state championship game, are not more important than player safety. Had a player been seriously injured in the eighth overtime due to fatigue, the decision to allow the game to continue would have been seriously questioned more than the decision to end it.

I'd much rather see them play short handed than do a shoot out for the win; seems like a cop out ending to a great battle. Take a player off the ice, open the game up and you'll increase the odds of a quicker ending.
You can't make up rules as you go along, so that wasn't an option. Agreeing to end early was.

Personally I like ties in situations like this. The goal that decided this game would have given complete bragging rights to the victor, while in fact they proved that neither team was better in any significant way. Sharing the title is perfect and the best tribute to this kind of championship.

You can make up rules - after the fact, which was the point of my post. Going forward, instead of seeing it end the way it did they can build something like this into the rules. College football has a similar rule with the 2 pt mandate after 2 OT's or whatever it is. High school hockey could easily pull a man off the ice after the first overtime, or second.
