2012 tOSU Recruiting Discussion

Part of the problem with hiring Meyer is that he has been out of the game for a year, and isn't up to speed with the 2012 recruits. If Meyer takes the job, then I presume that he will have to rely on the current staff's efforts, and continue to target the players who have already been identified - Alex Kozan, Nick Davidson, Jordan Diamond, Ifeadi Odenigbo, Jordan Diggs, Bam Bradley, Riquan Southward, etc. I doubt that Meyer would have time to identify any "system players" or "sleepers" at this point. However, if Ohio State hires Meyer, then we could see some blue chip national prospects suddenly become interested. Remember, there are still over two months until NLOID, and plenty of kids still have official visits left to take. Don't be shocked if a couple of kids turn up in Columbus completely out the blue.

Pretty much what I said above. Meyer is coming in cold with respect to the 2012 kids, and he hasn't really recruited in Ohio in a decade, so he'll have to trust that the current staff has made the right calls in handing out and accepting offers. If he sees a glaring mistake, then he might drop a kid, but I'm not expecting that to happen. Meyer will have plenty of opportunities to weed out kids once he gets them on campus.

And only after doing his best to make them pan out.

Meyer has been through this before and he knows the right way to reach the existing players (and in my mind this group of recruits is included in that). He needs them to buy in to win, and to do that, he needs to treat them the right way and make them all "his guys" and adapt to their strengths where it makes sense.

The biggest reason people fall into the "cupboard is bare" thing after a coching change is because they rely too much on "their system" and then as a result "their guys" to the detriment of the existing (and presumably talented) players on their rosters. Then you get lots of pointless transfers and bad blood, which you really don't need.

You are right that Meyer was out of the game and he will have to rely on the current staff, but that is assuming he was truly OUT of the game. The Washington interview of having a friend of Meyer visit him? So while Meyer might not be physically out there playing the game, he might have been playing the game in his mind and still getting info from 'friends'. Plus it isn't like he was out of the game for long. He was recruiting last year, and everyone knows recruiting starts earlier and earlier. All he has to do is get progress reports about players he liked before and get up to speed. And it isn't like the current coaches on staff would be his only resource...

This is the big key. Where do the new staff members come from? What players were THEY targeting at their old jobs? And would those players be #1 good enough to play at OSU and #2 if they would be open to going to Ohio St? What if the new offensive coordinator (whoever that is) could bring a stud OT up with him that he was recruiting that might have loved the coach but not the school? Or a WR or any other position?

Well the rumor is that the new LSU coordinator might come to tOSU (I think he has coached with Meyer at BGSU and he is from Fostoria, OH). That is a good sign in my book. When talking about recruiting how will the scholorship reductions play into recruiting (especially if NCAA takes more). That is really my only worry for this new group of coaches coming in.

I think with a coaching staff that Meyer could be bringing in, we will just be more selective on our approach. Just like how USC really hasn't been affected with their recruiting. They just offered high caliber guys who had been leaning their way, we may suffer in finding a few more late bloomers

USC hasn't been affected because they haven't taken the penalties until this season.

I wish I could recall the transition from Cooper to Tressel if any Ohio State commitments decided to re-open their recruitiment and/or the coaching staff decided it wanted to go in a different direction with recruiting (and current commits).

It will be interesting to see what happens to current commits in 2012, depending on the coaching staff's mindset.

The best thing about Meyer is that he has been down this road before. He coached the Utes in a BCS bowl before taking the Florida job and still managed to bring in some top notch recruits during the last month before NLOID...and that is before he really became a household name and before his two national championships. I agree..I would think we will be seeing some more 4/5 star kids coming our way if his hiring becomes a reality.

Of course there is. I'm not guaranteeing such a thing will happen, or even saying it's likely. But possible? Absolutely.

I said it in another thread and will repeat it here. If the new coach doesn't see you fitting into his plans he has an obligation to tell you that. If you aren't smart enough to figure out what that means he may have an obligation to assist you with your education as well.

When there is a coaching change there will always be some "weeding out".
That is probably a good thing over all.

hehe...he said "weed"

What are the thoughts on Cardale Jones in an Urban Meyer offense?

I think Cardale will fit nicely as a QB prospect in any system. He's got the measurables, arm strength and solid mobility that I think he'd be a solid prospect under Meyer. Chris Leak-esque? Is that undervaluing Cardale's talent?

Obviously Braxton is our guy for the next few seasons but Cardale may have 2 years of starting QB eligibility and I am wondering how Meyer may evaluate him in the overall QB class.

Cradale is alot taller and bigger than Leak. Cardale is closer to Pryor than he is Braxton. Cradale is Big and can move. IIRC he is 6'4 and around 230. He tore it up in the B33 game...looked like a man amongst boys.
