2012 tOSU Recruiting Discussion

My post was edited removing possible early departure name guesses; no disrespect was intended -- I was just suggesting, based on previous posts, who may leave to open more scholarships. A couple Medical losses have been mentioned ; but I have not seen any official confirmation of changes or kids leaving the 'active' team.

This is not the thread...nor the venue to discuss possible transfers...very unfair to the kids being mentioned.

It has been posited by numerous insiders that the numbers in this class could range from 20-23...for a variety of reasons.

Are any of those on scholarship former walk ons? They may or may not be renewed ...

This is the scholarship breakdown I came up with. I only show 64 underclassmen on ships, but that does not include Williams possible return.

None of these kids are walk on's to my knowledge.

As you can see we have a lot of young kids in the secondary and on the DL. I am sure some "sorting out" has occurred during the season that could lead to a transfer or two.

And really, if it were 23, that would be literally amazing given the circumstances. (and, not expounding on it, but, if the med waivers are included, it's almost unbelievable)

Needs, as posted many times, start with at least one Offensive Tackle -- preferably 2-3 good OL.

With the Price and Bell leaving, and Sabino and Klein being Seniors -- I think LB is the other 'most needed.' Unless, Powell, Bogard, Perry, or Washington can play LB.

We have good, relatively young Defensive Tackles, but in 2012 Simon and Goebel will be Srs., Hankins could opt for early draft, and Hale and Bennett burned the red shirts. Getting another Hankins or Bennett would be my third priority.

With OSU's Fr & Sophs' at the positions, and the current verbals any more DE's, WR's or TB's additions would have to be sure all-star candidates.

Of 11 commits 4 are now listed as "soft" verbals. Three of those "softs" seem to be based on comments the players made after recent visits to - Washington?

The rest of your post nonwithstanding I would so love for Washington to reemerge from the ashes.

Just took a peak at USC recruiting to see how they were faring now that they are finally confronting the reductions. Found it interesting.

Also interesting that 3 of those 4 are also among the 4 lowest rated recruits USC has and those 3 all committed in August or earlier.

Couple that with the fact that USC is listed as a team of interest for 22 top 100 players and it makes me wonder if these kids are soft because they are interested in going elsewhere or because they are being encouraged to look elsewhere.

Ain't nobody on the west coast going to compete with USC for recruits until UCLA gets healthy again. Stanford and Cal just don't have their heart in it. Wazoo is in Pullman and Oregon State is in Corvallis. If you've been to those two places you know what I mean. Oregon will last as long as Phil Knight's money and Washington has Seattle, which does a brisk business with the Birkenstock and down filled parka set, but it's a hard sell to kids from early-November to late May. Utah has to compete with the Pac 12 and BYU. Colorado is a mystery. That leaves Arizona and Arizona State, the graveyards of coaches.

USC's talent level during two years of "no bowl" football remained no worse than second best in the conference and their recruiting classes remain among the best which seems to say to me that a great many highly rated prospects could care less about bowl games and small recruiting classes, they want to go to SC.

The impending scholarship reduction that USC is about to endure might be just the thing to kick-start the UCLA program.

Somebody asked about what was allowed under the NCAA in regards to the new vs old staffs recruiting. I don't remember which thread it was in so I'll put it here...

NCAA Waiver Allows Meyer to Hit Recruiting Trail

.../snip/...

Fickell has served as the interim head coach since Jim Tressel was forced to resign back in May. He and all nine of his assistant coaches from the 2011 season will remain in place to coach the Buckeyes in the postseason thanks to a special waiver from the NCAA.

Under normal NCAA guidelines, teams are only permitted to have 10 full-time coaches on staff, including the head coach. In this case, Ohio State filed what is called an SLR waiver (formerly ARS), which is Subcommittee for Legislative Relief, with the NCAA.

'What we did in this case is file the waiver to say we would like to have more than 10 coaches, but the responsibilities essentially will not go beyond 10 coaches,' said Chris Rogers, Ohio State?s Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance.

'Which is to say, for a lack of a better word, the former coaching staff will have responsibilities for on-field coaching only. The new coaching staff members who would come on would have responsibilities for recruiting and administrative responsibilities only.'

That even applies to Meyer, who will have limited access to the actual day-in and day-out coaching of Ohio State's team until he takes over as the man in charge.

.../snip/...

So essentially Ohio State can have two independent staffs up and running. One coaching for the bowl and the other strictly recruiting.

That'll piss off the haters around the league. :)

Particularly if they see the pic of Perry with Urban and Luke.
