2012 tOSU Recruiting Discussion

How the hell hard is it for Urban to follow or catch up on recruiting?

Seriously, all the man needed to do is spend 90 minutes surfing the BP Recruiting forum and he'd be up to speed on every kid whoever once wore a red (scarlet, not crimson) shirt. :tongue2:

Is Luke's wife also recruiting for us?
So long as Layla Kiffin isn't out on the recruiting trail, we should have the "hot coaches' wives" thing pretty much sewn up - especially as Mike Locksley is no longer employed.

Ohio State Recruiting Under Urban Meyer: Is The Big Ten Ready For This?

By Bud Elliott
Urban Meyer has less than two months to finish out his first class at Ohio State. Our Buckeyes expert says his aggressive style is well-suited to doing just that.

Dec 1, 2011 - Wednesday night I was fortunate enough to chat with Tyler T. of Along The Olentangy, the excellent Ohio State site on the SB Nation network. Our main topic of conversation was, of course, Urban Meyer. And specifically Urban's plan to recruit at Ohio State.
And it's safe to say that Tyler believes Meyer is going to be a major hit.
"Meyer is bringing that SEC aggressiveness that hasn't been seen in the Big Ten. And I think he'll have immediate success with it because people haven't been exposed to it," said Tyler.
After all, Meyer is the coach who admitted to texting Florida Gators recruits while in church. The endless effort Meyer put in is believed to have contributed to his health issues that led to his retirement from Florida. So far this time around, some of the work is already done.
As I covered yesterday, Meyer already has a solid recruiting class thanks to Luke Fickell.
And the group left by Fickell is pretty good. Currently, the Buckeyes have 16 verbal commitments. By Rivals' star rating, the class is 18th in the country, with a 3.3 average. That's also good for fourth in the Big Ten, behind Nebraska, Michigan and Wisconsin. I'd personally place this class second in the Big Ten, behind only Michigan, as Nebraska has only eight commitments and Wisconsin only 12.
According to Tyler, Meyer plans to honor all current Buckeye verbal commitments. And that should be easy to do, Tyler points out, because Fickell didn't take fillers. Pretty much every current commitment is of Ohio State caliber. It's smart strategy to honor these commitments, because failing to do so could get Meyer off on the wrong foot with the tight-knit coaching community in Ohio.

i have a question...we have 16 commits this year...barring any other sanctions or whatever to scholarships we are looking at how many more recruits to fill out the class....7-8?

With all the hype going on, out of curiosity I checked Scout to see just how successful Urban has been at landing DL in particular.

In the four years from 2007 to 2010 Florida landed 7 DL who were rated either #1 or #2 at their position.

OK guys, riddle me this. Meyer comes aboard, and puts together his staff, leaving out all of the current OSU coaches but two or three (including Peterson). Now, what is the incentive for them to hang around and help Urban create his dynasty of 2012 recruits? A couple extra paychecks while they call around for jobs?

On the other hand, it sounds (to me at least), that Meyer's staff will be from far flung assistants that are not georgraphically looking at the recruits that OSU has been recruiting. "Corporate History" is lost, and methinks that many of the names on the recruiting board are mysteries to him. Maybe Luke can bring him up to speed, but there's gotta be some lost info there. So maybe he's not 'on' the guys that we OSU fanatics think are needed right away.....Don't know how much he was involved in recruiting during his hiatus of ESPiNning, so he could probably be starting from the Scout recruiting lists....dunno....

So, it again seems (to me at least) that he's got to start up in first gear, rather than go straight to third/fourth, when all the other teams with stable coaching staffs are trying to put the finishing touches on their recruiting classes, while fighting for the uncommitted kids that they think they can legitimately pick up. I'll be watching to see how he 'finishes up'.

:gobucks3::gobucks4::banger: Heck, if he was as smart as he's supposed to be, he'd logon to Buckeye Planet and read all of our blogs, and he'd have his problems solved

Dont worry, I'm sure he will just hire willy lyles to get all the info he needs. :sneaky:

My bet is that there will be changes to the names on the list of signees on NLOID versus present commits.

But, that all, or damn near all of the change will be greeted positively here and elsewhere - in the end.

I think all current verbals will be honored and will remain on board...and deservedly so.

Free Rivals - Meyer, Kiffin will resume recruiting wars

A report surfaced Thursday that USC coach Lane Kiffin text messaged Urban Meyer congratulating him on his new job at Ohio State and Kiffin joked to Steve Greenberg from Sporting News that he was "growing up."

One of the strangest story lines in recent memory was the Kiffin-Meyer feuds when the former was a firebrand at Tennessee and Meyer was the established, two-time national champion at Florida.

It was one of many less than desirable moments during Kiffin's short-lived tenure at Tennessee and he has certainly revamped his image and style once he took over the Trojans.

Don't expect Meyer and Kiffin to become fast friends anytime soon and even though they're not coaching in the same conference anymore there will still be some interesting recruiting battles along the way.

It should be fun to watch.

USC has wasted no time welcoming Meyer back to college football - and the ultra-competitive recruiting world - by recently offering Ohio State commit Bri'onte Dunn, a four-star running back from Canton (Ohio) Glenoak.

Sources say Dunn might be willing to listen to the Trojans and he's planning to visit USC as well. Michigan and Ohio State will also get visits as Dunn feels out Meyer and how the program will be run.

USC along with many other top programs also offered four-star defensive end Adolphus Washington, who moved to No. 36 in the 2012 class by Rivals.com, but the Cincinnati (Ohio) Taft standout isn't expected to switch his pledge. If anything is solid to the Buckeyes, it's Washington.

Continued...

Dunn isn't going that far away...

Fork Union (Va.) Military Academy wide receiver Michael Thomas, originally from Woodland Hills (Calif.) Taft, said he's been hearing more from USC recently but he's sticking with his commitment to Ohio State.

"I'm pretty much solid right now," Thomas said. "Everything is lined up for me at Ohio State. Now all I have to do is stay focused, keep working hard and keep perfecting my craft. Hard work really pays off and I'm loving the results. Nothing is going to be given to me. I am just earning it."

Just took a peak at USC recruiting to see how they were faring now that they are finally confronting the reductions. Found it interesting.

Of 11 commits 4 are now listed as "soft" verbals. Three of those "softs" seem to be based on comments the players made after recent visits to - Washington?

Also interesting that 3 of those 4 are also among the 4 lowest rated recruits USC has and those 3 all committed in August or earlier.

Couple that with the fact that USC is listed as a team of interest for 22 top 100 players and it makes me wonder if these kids are soft because they are interested in going elsewhere or because they are being encouraged to look elsewhere.

Assuming no one leaves we could take 20. That's only 4 more. Of course, I think you can assume that at least 2 or 3 will more will open up.

According to my estimates: Current 2012 Verbals 16; Available 2012 scholarships 19. Three scholarships available still; not counting any reductions for the 5 in 3 years.

85 scholarships per year allowed. There are 66 2011 scholarships returning for 2012 - 33 Freshmen, 19 Sophomores, 13 Juniors, 1 Senior (Nate Williams Returning).

Possible early departures: Freshmen: ...... (Let's not speculate about individuals who may transfer - not fair to the players. oh8ch)

As well, it's been mentioned that multiple players could qualify for medical hardship waivers.

Between 1-2 medical redshirts, a couple 4th year juniors not returning, and an almost guaranteed transfer or two (given the drastic regime & scheme change), they can safely sign a half dozen.
