2012 In-state Players to Watch

Bedford defensive end Myles Hilliard orally commits to Pittsburgh
Joe Maxse, The Plain Dealer, June 17, 2011

Bedford defensive end Myles Hilliard decided to play for Pittsburgh beginning in the fall of 2012. He tallied 59 tackles for the Bearcats last season.

Bedford, Ohio - Myles Hilliard decided Pittsburgh was the place to play.

The Bedford incoming senior defensive end made an oral commitment Friday to play for the Panthers in the fall of 2012. The 6-6, 245-pounder said his decision was locked in after visiting the Pittsburgh campus three weeks ago.

"It wasn't difficult at all," said Hilliard, who was credited with 59 tackles, including five sacks, for the Bearcats last season. "I had a good relationship with the coaches and the atmosphere on the campus and in the city was great.

"Once I visited, I came home and slept on it. But I knew it would be Pittsburgh."

Hilliard, 17 next month, said he had been considering West Virginia, Syracuse, Cincinnati and Michigan State. Ohio State was in the mix for a time.

"They were," said Hilliard, regarding OSU. "But they have five and six players at my position. At Pittsburgh, I will have the ability to come in as a freshman and start."

West Virginia got a great start on its offensive line football recruiting class of 2012 when it received word that Tyler Orlosky committed to the Mountaineer program.

What's interesting is supposedly Michigan pulled their offers to Kalis' teammates Orlosky and Kuhar...obviously that doesn't seem to have much of an effect on Kyle.

Bowling Green defensive lineman Izaah Lunsford was offered by Bowling Green on Tuesday, according to Shroder coach Gerald Warmack.

“They like the fact that he is very explosive,” Warmack said. “He is quick. He is pretty lean.”

Lunsford, who is 6 feet 3 and 260 pounds, will be a senior this season. He is getting interest from MAC, Big East and SEC programs, Warmack said. He said Syracuse is showing significant interest.

Lunsford is a three-year starter for Shroder. He had 58 total tackles and 6 1/2 sacks. He is expected to play both ways this season.

“..He’s a playmaker. (He is) definitely a kid who knows the game.”

Dooley is the second area linebacker from the 2012 class to verbally commit to the RedHawks this week. St. Xavier linebacker Nathan Gerbus committed to Miami on Tuesday.

Smith earns MVP honors at Ohio State's Nike football camp

Ohio State's recent Nike football camp was a very talented affair and it was hard to argue that the defensive line group didn't steal the show. However, at any other event, the talented group of defensive backs in attendance would have been the story of the weekend.

Taking home MVP honors for the defensive backs was Sebastian Smith of Pickerington Central.

With one offer from Indiana, Smith showed that he deserves several more. His size and length are undeniable at close to 6-3, but Smith was comfortable in his backpedal, turned his hips with ease and was a ball-hawk, roaming the secondary.

After playing in the shadows of Notre Dame signee Eilar Hardy in 2010, expect Smith to take the spotlight in 2011.

Quoting from the ESPN web site, "Smith is a rangy safety who could grow into a linebacker in a few years. He runs well for a tall DB and covers a ton of ground in the secondary. He is a true playmaker out on the field."

Smith is the son of the late Vernon A. Smith of Washington C.H. and the son of Rosey White.

Smith, already offered a full ride to play safety for the Indiana Hoosiers, has also been shown interest by Michigan State, Cincinnati, Nebraska, West Virginia, Michigan, Wisconsin, Miami (Oh.) and Toledo.
