2012 In-state Players to Watch

APPLEBY NO. 1?

Duane Long, a longtime recruiting analyst, recently wrote a piece for Bucknuts.com. In it, Long wrote about the top four quarterbacks in Ohio. The basis of the story was if Cardale Jones (Glenville) doesn?t qualify academically to play at OSU after a stint at Fork Union Military Academy, OSU will be in the market for a QB in the 2012 class.

Long ranked the QBs this way:

1, Austin Appleby (North Canton Hoover); 2, Tyler O?Connor (Lima Central Catholic); 3, Tyler Eden (University School) and 4, Mason Schreck (Medina).

NO CLEAR FRONT-RUNNER

Appleby said there isn?t any one school that, if it came in with an offer, he would accept on the spot. Florida and OSU are near the top of his list. He went to camp at both schools.

?I?ve been in contact with a lot of the big schools, and they?re all saying the same thing,? Appleby said. ?They said, ?See you in camp, and we?ll let you know within an hour.? ?

Appleby said Pittsburgh, Connecticut and Louisville are coming to North Canton in the coming weeks to see him throw and move.

?I understand their position,? he said. ?It?s a big investment and they want to make sure I?m right.?

What about a dream school?

?I?m not really in a position that if I were offered by a dream school I?d say, ?Yeah, I?m going there,? ? Appleby said. ?It?s a life decision. Every single school I?ve been to has been great. I want to go to a place where I can play at the highest level possible. I?m positive I will earn my job wherever I go. I also want to go somewhere that carries my major and I?ll do well in the classroom.?

Hoover High School quarterback Austin Appleby is returning this season following a knee injury. He is out to prove to college recruiters that he is healthy and worth their trust.

NORTH CANTON —

Days start early. They end late. Austin Appleby doesn’t have a choice. The North Canton Hoover High School quarterback has it all.

He is 6-foot-5, 225 pounds, and smart as a whip in the classroom and on the field. He has a thunderbolt of a right arm, but he also has the soft touch of a pillow in the back corner of the end zone.

Appleby also has something else: Something to prove.

His right knee was shredded during the first quarter in the eighth game of the season against McKinley in October. He remembers the play as if it were yesterday, not six months ago.

“I was in the pocket, and things broke down,” Appleby said one day last week in between therapy sessions. “The four d-linemen for McKinley are pretty good, so I snuck up the middle, and I was scrambling for a first down. Then I went to the left sideline by our bench.”

Appleby needed 10 yards and got 11 for a first down. He had his sights set on running over a McKinley defensive back.

“He got lower than I did,” Appleby said. “And he hit me just wrong. I popped up and thought it was a Charlie horse. When I got to the huddle, things didn’t feel right.”

His world, as a blue-chip college quarterback recruit, was shattered.

Appleby tore the ACL and MCL in his right knee. Trainers and doctors at the game knew what had happened. Preliminary tests at Fawcett Stadium indicated torn ligaments.

“They said I was probably done for the day,” Appleby said. “We got an MRI and confirmed it.”

Streetsboro offensive lineman getting national attention
By Sara Welch

The college football recruiting season is in full swing and Alex Todd, an offensive lineman at Streetsboro High School, is getting a lot of Division I attention.

At 6-foot-3 and 285 pounds, the senior-to-be has already received scholarship offers from Kent State University, Bowling Green State University, Indiana University and Miami University. That list of offers will likely continue to grow throughout the summer and through the start of next season.

Last football season, Todd had 24 pancake blocks in eight games. He was recognized as a First Team All-County Division performer. Todd was also named to the Division III All-Ohio Third Team, and he earned First Team Northeast Inland All-District honors.

Streetsboro head football coach John Arlesic said that Todd?s advantages over other linemen are his size, strength and quickness.

?He has overall strength and quick feet for his size,? Arlesic said. ?His explosion off the ball is an advantage.?
