2012 Defensive Line Discussion

Forget Nate Williams?

I actually accidentally overlooked him because he was listed as a senior on the site I was looking at, forgetting he was granted an extra year of eligibility.

Holy hell. Depth doesn't begin to describe what we have on the D-line.

The prospect of the starting DL being:

DE: Simon DT: Hankins DT: Bennett DE: Spence

with their backups being:

DE: Washington DT: Schutt DT: Miller DE: Pittman

is making me aaauugghhhuuu.. sorry. I meant to say is making me drool.

And you might have a real tough time trying to keep the "backups" off the field! I mean Schutt looks like an animal. If you win a defensive lineman award on this team you are certainly going to have to earn it.

Garrett Goebel and Nathan Williams might, just might have a say in all this. Along with some of the other talented defensive linemen that are coming back next year.

Honestly, we see this every year. People go gaga over the new recruits coming in who probably won't see the field all that much and forget about the names that are already here who will likely be on the field the majority of the time.

Counting on Nate Wiliams to be the same guy one year after microfracture knee surgery is just as optimistic as putting true freshman in the two deep imo.

Just for fun, here's a pretty accurate example of what the depth chart could look like for the DL next season:

LEO:
Williams
Miller
Spence
JT Moore

NT:
Hankins
Bellamy
Schutt
Baldwin

DT:
Goebel
Bennett
Hale
Farris

SDE:
Simon
Washington
Hayes
Pittman

Not counting guys like Fellows or Elflein who could end up in the rotation if healthy or position change

IDK... We've got some serious depth as it is.
DT:
Bennett
Miller
Hankins
Schutt

There's a few others but these are the guys who, IMO, will get the playing time.

the champion teams/SEC have at least a few/or more Hankins or bigger. Thats why we lost the titles only Pitcock had any size and if the one biggie gets doubled team its over against top teams

I think alot of you are just trying to even it out so it looks like a solid 4 deep. But in fact a lot of you have guys in positions that are not correct. We do not even have a NT. We have 1 technique and 3 technique tackles. If you want to say someone is a NT, its the guys that play the 1 technique DT position. They line up on the outside shoulder of the Center (more of a run stuffer), where the 3 technique DT lines up on the outside shoulder of one of the guards (better pass rush DT than the 1). Here is my predicition on where our DL will line up this next year.

LEO
Nathan Williams (If healthy)
Steve Miller
Noah Spence
JT Moore
Adolphus Washington

DT (3 Technique)
Jonathan Hankins
Michael Bennet
Darryl Baldwin
Chase Farris

DT (1 Technique)
Garrett Goebell
Joel Hale
Tommy Schutt

SDE
John Simon
Adam Bellamey
Kenny Hayes
Se'Von Pittman

Now I'm not saying this would be the order that they see the field. But I feel that these are the positions that they are best fit for. I think Pittman moves to SDE instead of LEO because he has a frame that could put on more mass and not lose his speed at 6'5" 245. But for the first time in awhile, we have a DLine that we can easily plug in a kid when someone needs a breather and not lose a step.

Do any of you remember that wall they had in Berlin awhile back? Well I'm thinking that our D-line is going to be more impressive than that. So my question is what's it going to be called here on BP? I'm kinda liking the Urban Triangle...I just don't see much going into it and ever finding it's way out again. :oh:
Why mess with the classics. The Silver Bullets.

Bill Lucas is right. Let's not get carried away and think next year's DL is going to be Washington, Spence, Pittman and Schutt.

If Fickell keeps the same scheme it will be DE (LEO), DT, Nose, DT.

You've both got both Miller and Spence passing Moore at LEO? Considering JT played in all 12 games this year and played well at times I just don't see that happening. I think you are selling him way short. And I don't think that is the ideal spot for Miller eventually anyways.

And I know nevada has said Miller has looked good during bowl practice.

It was well known that we ran some of the most complex schemes in the country (i.e. every member of the defensive line could drop back into coverage). I am very curious to see how this changes. I would rather "unleash" the front 4 to be true pass rushers and keep the back 7 as coverage guys with the occasional blitz sprinkled in.

Yep. OSU's 2012 D-line recruiting class, as it stands right now, is obviously the pot at the end of the rainbow. But it's probably more realistic to expect that to have a major Saturday-afternoon impact in another 2 years or so, than to expect it to have an immediate impact. And it would be fantastic if Williams could come back as he was, but it would also be extremely fortunate.

I roughly agree with this assessment for the OSU/LSU BCSNC game. But for the OSU/UF BCSNC game, I think the fact that the OSU offense managed something like a total of 83 yards from scrimmage, for the entire game, had something to do with it as well.

I never said that would be the EXACT order they would be on the field. Just threw names in under a certain position. JT Moore was a very solid contributer this past season and I would not be surprised to see him as the starter at LEO if Nate is not fully healthy at the beginning of the year.
