2012 Defense Discussion

No, they didn't score, but they kept getting first downs with it. That's OK I guess. Nobody else we play is going to watch any of that video anyway................

It doesnt bother me much if teams get a couple first downs and dont score. It will be a morale victory for the other team at the end of the game. You don't get points for first downs. As far as "watching tapes" go, who cares. We watch football games and make predictions for the following week and are usually wrong because plays aren't going to happen the same way they did the week before hand. Every week is different, every game isn't the same.

Stats are stats. There have been some positive plays. Nobody is denying that. However the fundamental improvement just isn't there. We still biff on a ton of tackles. LB's still don't wrap up, while yesterday was slightly better, angles can be an issue.

Sure, we have a pretty decent turnover margin. However this is a school that has hung its hat on defense and special teams and both units have shined through-out the decade. Urban preaches these area's as well. (It sure wasn't his offenses that won him his BCS titles) To see both facets of our game be so mediocre is truly astounding.

I agree that it is embarrassing to be bad on tackling, its a basic fundamental thing. But if tackling and angles are ALL we have to worry about, I will take it every year. Players are healthy for the most part, were winning the turnover margin, limiting TD's to FG's, doing VERY well in the red zone. There are too many good things the Bucks are doing to grade these kids out with an F.

One question for minds better than I:

Do you think that one negative of the hurry-up offense is that it forces our defense to play tired if the offense goes 3-and-out very often? It would seem that our defense would be at a disadvantage, because a 3 and out means 2, maybe 3 minutes elapses before they're back out to play. That doesn't excuse poor tackling, but one wonders if it hurts.

UAB and Cal both ran about 80 plays each. That is incredibly disturbing.

What is the average from Urban's time at BG, Utah and FL? I'm curious because if his offense is supposed to be so aggressive wouldn't that result in there being more possessions by the other team's offense?

Don't know too much about those stats, but I think yesterday and last Saturday had more to do with UAB just be able to get consistent 3rd and shorts and convert from the 1st quarter onward. They had 5 drives of 10 or more plays, and 2 drives that went for 8 and 9 plays. They also converted at least 2 3rd & 16s. It's not something that can't be fixed, but I think it's more of a defensive problem and less of an effect of the offense.

I don't know the stats for the others (a quick google of ncaa stats will yield the archived statistics on their page), but his 06, 08 & 09 defenses were suffocating and very highly ranked.

UAB is a dreadful offensive football team that put up 400 yards of offense. Let that sink in.

...and then realize that MSU is a dreadful offensive football team that has Leveon Bell and therefore won't bog down in the red-zone like UAB did. Let that sink in.

UAB averages 16.7 ppg. We gave them 15. UAB averages 101.7 rushing yards pg. We gave them 144.
Cal averages 27.8 ppg. We gave them 28. Cal avearges 175.8 rushing yards pg. We gave them 224.

These last two games, our defense has been nothing but average when it comes to scoring defense, and well below average when it comes to stopping the run. Not below B1G average...but below FBS average. I think other FBS teams are improving week to week, and this team is not. I feel like each week, our defense has gotten a little bit worse, to where now they go into the B1G season looking like a below average defensive football team. That is not what the talent level on this team would have you think, but if you watch how they have played, how can you come up with any other conclusion?

Those who say that every week is different, and hate using how a team plays last week to dictate how they will look in the future, are justified when you look at the past. Game to game, week to week, things change. But usually, the change is to get better, with bumps along the way for sure. But unless this is just a major two week bump for this defense, then the trend isn't there.

Michigan State will have the strongest O-line and run game Ohio State has seen. Of course this defense could come out, shut them down, and get on track to having a great year in conference. The talent is there. But from what we have seen, I am a little worried that this defense could get gashed. And it doesn't get any easier the next week with Nebraska. Their offense is legit. It will take a mighty effort to stop them.

These are probably the two best teams the Buckeyes have left to play, and it comes at a time where the defense has very little confidence and momentum. Somehow this team needs to be able to gain that confidence in the defense on the fly during these two difficult games. Come out of this 6-0, and it may be quite a special season. But if they don't get their butts in gear, then 4-2 can get ugly really quickly.

UAB had over 400 yards of total offense on our turf...fucking UAB.

and how many times did they have a 4th and manageable only to run the FG team out? If they go for those like most mid majors will they convert and score a couple more TD's.
