2012 Defense Discussion

Stats are stats. There have been some positive plays. Nobody is denying that. However the fundamental improvement just isn't there. We still biff on a ton of tackles. LB's still don't wrap up, while yesterday was slightly better, angles can be an issue.

Sure, we have a pretty decent turnover margin. However this is a school that has hung its hat on defense and special teams and both units have shined through-out the decade. Urban preaches these area's as well. (It sure wasn't his offenses that won him his BCS titles) To see both facets of our game be so mediocre is truly astounding.

Exactly. A punt functions as a turnover. I'd prefer seeing more forced punts and lower yardage, simply because I don't want to rely on turnovers every game. We won't need so many turnovers if we can get the opposing offense off the field consistently and doing so won't necessarily preclude turnovers.

agreed on the defensive champs. Hankins is about the most consistent we have on defense.

I thought other than the great plays Grant had he was relatively quite and as a corner thats what you want.

Bryant did play a good game. Not sure about great, but good.

Read through the past couple of pages.. Some thoughts.

A) This game with MSU will be close if for no other reason of our offense is further ahead of theirs, and quite frankly they're just not that good. Like us unfortunately.

B) I personally have faith in Howard/Grant/Robey all in man to man coverage. I don't see many teams trotting out multiple recievers with talent anymore the rest of the way so why not? The safties though? Not confident at all in man.

C)Many defensive coaches deserve blame. Withers' secondary style seems very passive as coach said, Fickel doesn't seem to be adjusting very well, and Vrabel isn't rotating guys enough. All summer we've been saying we're rolling 8-10 deep, now prove it.

Decided to check and as bad as the defenses in the Big 10 have been, we are dead last in yards given up per game, giving up nearly 30 yards more per game than 2nd to last Northwestern and only they have given up more pass yards than we have. As for points per game, we are 5th. We are getting the wins, but that obviously is not Ohio State defense no matter how you twist it.

We have not faced an offensive juggernaut yet...Cal is at the bottom half of the Pac 12 in total yards offense, Miami is almost last in the MAC, UAB is 2nd to last in Conference USA (even including their 400+ against us), and only UCF has put up somewhat good offensive numbers and is near the top of their conference. After considering our opponents, the need for improvement becomes even more obvious.

Carried over from the Doran Grant thread...

Start him over Travis Howard when Roby is healthy. I'm sick of seeing Howard give absolutely piss poor effort in making a tackle week after week year after year.

Really? Isn't Howard leading the team in interceptions so far?

Without going back and watching all of his interceptions, I don't recall any of them showcasing a great play on his individual part. If I recall I think they're all off tipped passes that fell right to him, or absolutely horrendous throws by the QB. I think in his case it's a pretty overrated stat considering Roby is a much better cover corner and I'm not sure if he even has 1 int.

Howard, overall, can be considered a good corner and I have no quarrel with that. But, this is Ohio State and IMO he hasn't played as well as an OSU CB should. Yeah I may be overreacting and spoiled due to years of having GREAT DB's but why should we get complacent? I just cannot stand watching him run by a ball carrier, reach out with his hands, grab jersey, and the guy runs right through it over and over and over. Every one on here keeps blaming the coaches for poor tackling and that is fine, but if a player isn't making tackles part of your responsibility as a coach is to either coach that player up or FIND SOMEONE ELSE WHO WILL TACKLE. Playing defensive back isn't all about interceptions, especially when most of the yardage we have given up as a defense is due to simply missing a gazillion tackles every week. Maybe I am in the minority here but I wouldn't mind seeing Doran Grant get a shot at starting over Howard when Roby comes back after how he played this past week.

We're starting over and we need to understand that. This is the learning year!

The D Coord. have been using the excuse that teams have been going out of character in order to surprise the Bucks and playing with nothing to lose. This game is different MSU needs this win at home and wiill be totally in character. Its up to the players and coaches to stop Bell and make Maxwell win the game. I would play tight coverage so Maxwell can't get the easy short throws and get in a rythym. I am not a coach so whatever the plan we must execute(tackle).

We are not starting over on defense. Maybe a few new wrinkles here and there but by and large its the same defense. Besides, defenses are normally easier to pick up on than offenses.

Yeah, same defense other than all of the defensive coaches being replaced and/or moved - and a new HC. But other than that, the same.

The more I think about it the more I think the problems revolve around the linebackers. Meyer hinted at that a little bit when he said it is difficult to man up on the edge because that means a LB has to man up on someone in the middle as well. That seems like the obvious reason we're not getting rid of those infuriating 10 yard cushions. Get rid of those cushions and it exposes the LBs more.

Sabino is okay. Shazier is inconsistent. Klein is too slow and Grant can't get on the field (probably mental although he looks a step slow as well when he does get on the field).

Conner Crowell was set back an entire season by injury.

And a bunch of freshmen.

Dorian Bell should be a senior leader of the group this year. He's not on the team.

Jordan Whiting would be an upperclassman. He's not on the team.

Jonathan Newsome would be an upperclassman. He's not on the team.

Chad Hagan is not on the team.

Scott McVey is not on the team.

Jamel Turner is not on the team.

Ejuan Price is not on the team.

Yeah, linebackers.

I hope that Fickell gets a little bit more of a cushion than he normally would based on that ridiculous amount of attrition alone.

I also hope to see drastic improvement sooner rather than later from the group (this Saturday would be ideal), but Fickell was dealt a bad hand and the group needs to be rebuilt from the ground up.

I believe we can nab a good one to close the 2013 class (Mitchell, McMillan or Johnson) and then go hard after the Big 3 in 2014. We need an influx of talent at LB in the worst way.

All true. We sure were snakebit in our linebacker recruiting over the past 5 years or so.
