Since I'm assuming Bill Carmody is out at Northwestern, I was debating who'd the school would replace him with.

High-level coaches won't take that job.

I narrowed it down to maybe Tommy Amaker or taking a flyer on a coach who hasn't coached college for a long time (like Quinn Snyder, even though he had NCAA problems).

Just follow the ESPN route and hire Dakich. But hopefully they are smarter than that. Amaker would make for an interesting storyline with scUM.

Looking at the Northwestern situation further:

Gregg Marshall, Wichita State
Scott Nagy, South Dakota State
Tommy Amaker, Harvard

I don't think Greg McDermott would go from Creighton to Northwestern because he'd be making similar money ($1m to $1.1m). I don't think a UNLV or BYU coach would go to Northwestern as well.

Where are you getting the information that Carmody is out at Northwestern:huh: Injuries have taken a toll on his teams the past couple years and if Northwestern is going to do anything in basketball they need to upgrade their facilities before hiring a new coach. Carmody's coaching style fits the type of athletes that Northwestern has and will get in the future unless they lower their academic standards.

Two-year contract extension in 2011 (2011-12 & 2012-13) is up. He won't get another contract extension without an NCAA appearance, regardless of injuries, considering he needed a vote of confidence to not get fired after last season.

Honestly, I'm not sure that Carmody is out at Northwestern. He isn't doing any worse this year than he typically does over the course of his lengthy tenure at NU. I remember reading that last summer he felt very relieved because a member of the administration who was the biggest proponent of letting him go departed NU to take a position in the Pac-12.

If you're Northwestern, who would you hire to make a change? You have invested basically nothing in your program to attract talent - you can't really expect to have a winner. Why change the coach when he's had some modest (for them) success lately and you've changed none of the underlying factors that have caused NU to struggle over the past several decades?

Hmmm. Brings John L. Smith to mind - he might be available for the right price.

Yes, I know O'Neill coached Northwestern before. I don't think it's a very attractive job at this point. I just feel like they should hold onto Carmody until they decide to upgrade their facilities or he retires.

The thing with IU is now that they are winning, Crean is getting some big-time recruits. The state of Indiana has always been good for basketball, but it seems like the past year/two, and the next year/two, Indiana is absolutely loaded. Plus, Crean is recruiting well nationally (getting a guy like Noah Vonleh, for example).

IU definitely won't be the same team next year after losing all these guys. What makes them so good this year is that post threat that Zeller brings, much like we were lucky to see with Sullinger. They will be an extremely perimeter dominated team, which actually falls pretty well into the hands of what OSU is able to stop defensively.

No more Big East Men's Basketball Tournament at Madison Square Garden in the future.

For some reason, I keep thinking the Big Ten is going to hold their tournament there, at least once, after the term in Chicago is up and cities can bid again.

What it'll do is alienate travel for Western Big Ten schools (like Wisconsin).
