2012-13 Big Ten Basketball

Anyone hear or read any movement on the Minnesota job to replace Tubby?

I know either the school declined or Flip Saunders declined, but haven't heard much else.

Don't know why, but since there's little movement, I was thinking then it must be Gregg Marshall's job or something. I'm probably wrong on that one.

No, I know they have been rejected by almost all of their potential candidates. The flavor of the week seems to be Bryce Drew, but the fanbase seems pretty apprehensive over him.

Visiting GopherHole will keep you/get you pretty up to speed on the process.

Thanks.

I don't know why I was thinking Gregg Marshall. Probably because it seems to be very quiet (out of Minnesota) and I was thinking it was probably someone who's still coaching.

It's Andy Katz, so it has a 50 percent chance of being wrong, but he is reporting Rick Pitino's son is going to be named the coach of Minnesota.

He has one year head coaching experience. I guess the Minnesota braintrust got it right with Shaka Smart at VCU. I think they're hoping for the same here.

What always seems to get overlooked in the media lovefest with Shaka Smart (who does seem to be a very good young coach) is that he took over a pretty successful program. VCU has never had a coach with a losing career record there, but their current run started with Jeff Capel (79-41 and promoted to Oklahoma) and then Anthony Grant (76-25 and promoted to Alabama). That's a program that has won 18+ for a dozen years now.

I don't know if Minny has any similar momentum for a new young coach to run with, and the B1G sure ain't the CAA.

I know Tubby's been asking for a practice facility for 4-5 years for basketball.

The last time the program was ultra-successful, Clem Haskins had the academic scandal.

I'm curious how you spin this any other way than "Well, he might be good?"

One year of head coach experience, never coached in the midwest...not much of a resume but better than hiring an old retread you know stinks I guess.

I'll predict that the words "Shaka" and "Smart" are said by Minnesota admins at least three times during the introduction press conference.

If you look at other candidates, I think Minnesota's choices appear to be limited (at least from the other reported candidates).

I'm flabbergasted than USC and UCLA didn't wait until Wichita State bowed out so they could woo Gregg Marshall. IMO he's the prime catch of all the hot coaches. Minnesota obviously doesn't have enough gravity to attract Marshall.

Marshall probably is a better bball coach but he doesn't look like a "west coast" guy:wink: ...recruiting
