2012-13 Big Ten Basketball

2. ?ould the Big Ten send four teams to the Final Four? The Michigan-Kansas Sweet 16 game should be great, but if the Wolverines play like they did Saturday, they can roll with anyone. Michigan State has a tough road with No. 1 seed Louisville looming in the Midwest, and Indiana struggled with Temple on Sunday and now gets Syracuse. And then there are the Buckeyes and their broken West region.

But “not impossible” is one of the answers to that question. Where do

It's Minnesota though. They have limits and they had a coach who has a national championship ring. Minnesota is better now then when Tubby was first hired. I can accept Tubby being fired if they hit a homerun on the hire which would be Shaka, Flip Saunders, maybe Enfield or Howland.

Howland would be Tubby v2.0...nearly an identical hire, just with a shittier personality.

They were pretty good in the 90's. Even got to a Final 4 or two IIRC.

I know it's "Shaka Smart or Bust" for Minnesota, but I think he's probably waiting on the Duke job. So the ties to the AD's probably won't matter (in the end).

With Andy Enfield, I'd hope he isn't a repeat of Darrin Horn (make Sweet 16, immediately moves to a bigger conference, can't repeat success). But the style and atmosphere that Enfield tries to create isn't comparable to Horn (it's better). So the two probably aren't comparable.

So, Tom Creep with an inferiority complex. In all seriousness, it would take an ambitious coach to step in and think he can create an elite player out of the Minnesota program. So this might be a huge hire or a huge miss that sets them back for half a decade. And by sets them back, think of a barely being competitive in the B1G (ala PSU). It helps that the new AD came from VCU and might be able to influence Shaka to jump ship, but I doubt the gophers would be his ultimate job.

Chris Collins’ interview with Northwestern officials went so well Monday, the school might move to hire the Duke associate head coach this week even with the Blue Devils in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament.

A source told the Tribune that it’s “not outside the realm of possibility” that Northwestern would announce Collins’ hiring before Duke’s next game, which is Friday against Michigan State.

An industry analyst said he believed it would be a smart way for Northwestern to generate added exposure.

Missouri-Kansas City did that when it hired Louisville assistant Kareem Richardson on March 19. Richardson is remaining with Louisville throughout the tournament.

Collins would do the same before coming to Evanston for a pomp-and-circumstance announcement.

Hiring Collins, a former Illinois Mr. Basketball from Northbrook, would be considered a huge coup for NU athletic director Jim Phillips, who wants to put his stamp on the basketball program.

If Collins goes to NW I would have to think that Paulus is at least in the conversation for the Duke assistant job. Or even Collins could get him as an assistant at NW.
Never thought about that. I don't know about the relationship between Paulus and big nose. Also, there are quite a few job openings in some smaller Division I schools and once our season is over (Championship). Some of our assistants might land a head coaching gig so Paulus could move up the food chain right here.

Not that it would be the end-all, be-all overriding factor, but I have a hard time seeing Greg Paulus go anywhere when Craft has one year remaining. From everything I've ever heard, the two are extremely tight. Maybe (probably) I'm overstating their relationship, and Paulus would have no qualms about already leaving for an assistant gig elsewhere, but the two seem to be guys that march to the same beat.

I am sure, though, that there would be a bit of a salary bump for Paulus taking any assistant job, so there's also that...

Yeah, I think this NIT run is good for Iowa. They have a very young team, I think only one Senior, and they get to play more postseason games than they would've if they were in the NCAA tourney. Good experience for their team. This was kind of a transition year for Iowa, as they grow towards being an NCAA tourney team. McCaffery will have to keep building and getting more top-100 type players to keep it going, though.

Who do you think is leaving early for Michigan?

Do all 4 go, Burke/Hardaway/Robinson/McGary? I have a feeling Mitch made himself some money this postseason, the big man is putting together a very impressive run.

If they win the title, I say all four do. They are blitzing Florida right now.
