Buckeyes pursue QB considered top prospect in nation

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Depending on the point of view, Ohio State is either off to a fast start for its 2011 football recruiting class or it's making up for a few late stumbles this year.

Either way, the 10 players who have already committed to the Buckeyes are impressive, analyst Bill Kurelic of Bucknuts said.
"Hands down, they have the best class in the Big Ten right now," Kurelic said.

Defensive ends Kenny Hayes and Steve Miller, four offensive linemen led by Brian Bobek, and safety Jeremy Cash are the top names so far. Earlier this year, the Buckeyes limped to the finish line with its 2010 class, when they landed only one of three offensive linemen they had been targeting.
"The Buckeyes had a good recruiting year last year, but I think at Ohio State you are shooting for greatness," Kurelic said. "If you have a good year, you want to bounce back with a great year the next time around, and they are well on the way to doing that."

Ohio State will try again to finish strong, even though it's still eight months before national letters of intent can be signed. But the pursuit of the big names in this class started years ago in some cases, including the No.1 target, quarterback Braxton Miller of Wayne High School in Huber Heights.

Miller has scholarship offers from most major programs, gaining his first informal invite at the end of his freshman season. A cousin of former Ohio State receiver Dee Miller of the late 1990s, Braxton Miller is rumored to be leaning toward the Buckeyes. Miller hasn't said which school is his top choice.

"He's pretty tight-lipped," Kurelic said.

Kurelic expects Miller's finalists will be Ohio State, Florida and Alabama, but the pressure will be on the Buckeyes.

"I think it's a huge must-get for Ohio State," Kurelic said. "He's the No.1 prospect in Ohio, and with this being (quarterback) Terrelle Pryor's junior year coming up, it's imperative that they get Braxton Miller."

Miller, who runs well but prefers passing, "is as athletic as just about any quarterback prospect in the country," Kurelic said. "With the spread that the college offensive game has evolved into, almost every school is looking for a guy like him because he puts so much pressure on defenses."
Miller is on the ESPN Top 150 and is considered the No.1 overall prospect in the nation by Scout.com.

After Miller, Kurelic rates the following players as being on Ohio State's watch list, based on talent and probability of choosing the Buckeyes:
Defensive lineman Michael Bennett of Centerville; defensive back Doran Grant of Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary; defensive lineman Joel Hale of Greenwood, Ind.; linebacker Trey DePriest of Springfield; defensive back Ron Tanner of Eastmoor Academy; offensive lineman Aundrey Walker of Cleveland Glenville; tight end Nick Vannett of Westerville Central; receiver Evan Spencer of Vernon Hills, Ill.;

Defensive back Dondi Kirby of Monroeville, Pa.; linebacker James Vaughters of Tucker, Ga.; defensive lineman Kevin McReynolds of Washington; defensive back Shane Wynn of Cleveland Glenville; defensive back Jabari Gorman of Miami; linebacker Conner Crowell of Waldorf, Md.; defensive back Wayne Lyons of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and offensive lineman Angelo Mangiro of Succasunna, N.J.

"Some of these guys, like Bennett and Grant, are considered to be some of the top players at their positions nationally," Kurelic said. "That's why this class has so much potential."

I wonder if Spencer's commit will have a Jonathan Newsome type impact on Wynn. If any of these other receivers decide on OSU, would the coaches still guarantee Wynn a spot and potentially have to turn away Hale or Vannet or someone? Should be an interesting summer... Each new commit just adds more pressure on many of the others to not miss the boat.

I really don't wanna see 3 Glenville kids go elsewhere out of the 11 class. Hope to nail down Jones or Wynn, don't wanna crack the door to where it's open.

I'm with you there...I really like all 3 and would hate to see any of them go elsewhere.
