2011 tOSU Defense Discussion

I hope its as good as any in the country starting next week, when we begin Big Ten play against a pretty good team.

If Notre Lame's D could hold them to under 50yds rushing, I think we'll do alright, and I don't see COusins and Cunningham going off against our secondary like they did Notre Dame's, IMO. But the more reps the young pups get the better, you can tell each game they seem to be getting better

The defense has really regressed. The secondary is terrible, the linebackers are mediocre at best, there are missed tackles and poor angles all over the field, and we have no pass rush. Other than that, things look good.

I know none of you want to hear this but, youth is the biggest problem on defense.

I don't know that I agree with this. The linebackers have been in the program for a while and still seem out of position all the time. On the D-line, the problem isn't so much youth as a lack of natural pass rushers without Williams. Moeller is a 5th year senior and he's been pretty bad, granted, he may just not be physically right given everything he's gone through. Howard has plenty of experience, but he still misses his fair share of tackles and takes bad angles at times. Roby has been a breath of fresh air. There is some youth at play. Bryant makes bad decisions at times, and I think he'll eventually figure it out. But I'm not totally buying the youth excuse.

It's not an excuse. How much have some of the guys starting played before this year? Losing Nathan Williams killed the pass rush, and guys like Steve Miller aren't ready to be out there. The LB corp looks a lot different if Dorian Bell is still here, and gotta believe Ejuan Price woulda been a factor as well. Howard hasn't played well, and Clarke is in the dog house. Who you gonna throw out there Doran Grant?

Losing Williams definitely did hurt, but the reason guys like Miller and Grant (and Price if he had stayed here) aren't playing is because there are guys that have more experience and/or have been in the program longer than them.

We have youth on defense in the sense that a lot of the guys will be back as juniors and seniors next year (i.e., we don't have a lot of seniors). But most of the guys that are out there have either had a fair amount of meaningful playing time in the past or have been in the program for 2 or 3 years.

But the thing that seems alarming to me is that the defense, as a whole, seems to be regressing right now.

So your answer to youth and inexperience at linebacker is more youth and inexperience?

Outside of Simon, Hankins, Shazier, Roby, Barnett and sometimes Bryant I dont see a whole lot of desire and playmaking abilities. This team sorely misses Nathan Williams. Sabino, Sweat and Klein aren't doing anything, which is seemingly why we only keep 2 of them on the field at the same time. Simon never lets up. Shazier is seemingly in on every play, when he's actually on the field. Roby making that tackle while being blocked by the Purdue WR proved how tough he is. The rest of the team needs to get on their level. Our secondary is honestly our best unit with the exception of Bryant making mistakes from time to time. Love the fact the Roby, Barnett and Bryant all love contact. I'm really optimistic of the future of the silver bullet secondary but skeptical of the D-Line and LB play.

tOSU is a package/rotation team. Purdue's 'nitro' no huddle negated that aspect of the defensive philosophy. When that happens, you are asking certain to players to do things they are not used to doing....also, I'd guess on at least 20% of the defensive calls, there were miscommunications on coverages, stunts, etc.

Purdue had a better plan and the beginning of the game was a prime example of that. Once, the coaches were able to settle the kids and get what they wanted on the field, good things happened. However, it was too late.

You are far more knowledgeable than I, and I accept your explanation of what is contributing to the problems I'm seeing out there, but it also seems to me that this unit--the linebackers and to a certain extent the DBs, in particular--is lacking in fundamentals right now. I keep seeing over-pursuit from the linebackers, poor angles from the linebackers and DBs, inexplicably huge cushions from the corners, and a failure to wrap up on tackles. The defense in general doesn't seem like it swarms the ball like a Silver Bullets defense typically will.

The secondary is raw but talented....over aggressive at times and definitely prone to blown assignments. However, he LB unit is as average as I've seen in a decade in Columbus.
