2011 Quarterbacks Discussion

Way Too Early Look: 2011 Quarterbacks
by www.TheBuckeyeBattleCry.com

So Buckeye Nation, this is my plea to you. Please, please don't debate who should start at quarterback based on their merits as a passer.

We all know that the starting QB is going to be chosen for excelling at taking the ball from center without fumbling, handing it off without fumbling, running around without fumbling, and throwing it far enough out of bounds to guarantee no interceptions.

Too pessimistic for you?

Well, another reason it doesn't matter who starts in place of Pryor is because the Buckeyes are more than capable of going 5-0 running the ball with a stable of outstanding young backs running behind a massive offensive line.

Buckeye fans, get ready, because deep down, we all know who the starting QB will be.

Regardless of the QB, we're gonna be a heavy run oriented team in the first 5 games. I know a lot of people are clamoring for B Miller, but even if he does win the starting job, it's not like we're gonna open up the offense for him and he's gonna look like Darron Thomas or Cam Newton out there. Our offense will probably be run similar to how we were after the Purdue loss last year. Heavy run, and rotate in fresh legs when needed. I say we're gonna see 3 RBs getting some heavy reps next year, and a lot of bubble screens and intermediate passes and an occassional play action set up from all the running. And honestly, using that gameplan we can easily go 5-0.

If you put Bauserman teams will just load up the box and challenge Joe to win with his arm. I havent seen enough out of joe to believe he can throw well, and we wont have experienced receivers to help him. At least with Kenny or Braxton you have a mobile qb who can tuck it and run.

Kevin Noon stated today on Rivals Radio that he thinks Braxton Miller will get reps for the 5 games that Pryor is suspended, but that Taylor Graham will be the starter for those 5 games

OHIO STATEThe candidates: Joe Bauserman (senior), Taylor Graham (redshirt freshman), Kenny Guiton (sophomore), Braxton Miller (freshman), Terrelle Pryor (senior).
The buzz: Pryor is headed into his fourth season as the starter, but it's his early season status -- he has been suspended by the NCAA for the first five games for receiving illegal benefits -- that makes Ohio State's quarterback situation worth watching. While Pryor never has quite lived up to his high school billing, he still has guided the Buckeyes to three BCS games and won two of them. He played some of his best football down the stretch in 2010 and would've been on every preseason Heisman list except for the little matter of the suspension. Ohio State is hopeful an appeal means the suspension is cut by one or two games, but the potential exists for Pryor's backup to start five games this fall. Bauserman, who played three seasons of minor league ball in the Pittsburgh Pirates' organization after high school, was Pryor's backup last season. He has thrown 47 passes in 24 career games. It's more likely, though, that Graham or Miller will start the opener. Graham's dad, Kent, played quarterback at Ohio State and in the NFL. He probably is the best pure passer on the roster. Miller, a highly touted true freshman, enrolled in January and will go through spring drills. He was the No. 1 dual-threat quarterback in the nation out of Huber Heights (Ohio) Wayne. Pryor had foot surgery last month, which means he could be held out of contact work in the spring. The length of his suspension may play a role in his replacement. Miller has a high ceiling, but do the coaches want to play him when they could redshirt him instead? It would seem that unless he is head and shoulders above Graham and Bauserman, he -- and the program -- would be better-served by him sitting out as a redshirt.
Projected starter: Graham early, then Pryor once his suspension is lifted.

Why in the hell would we start a drop back passer the first 4-5 games and then switch back to our "Pryor" offense for the last half of the season. It makes NO sense to totally switch your offense half way through a season. Throw Braxton in there as a freshman and see what he can do. Run a dumb down offense of what he will see in the future. Much like the way we did with Pryor.

I have heard A LOT of good things about Graham. But since Pryor will start the minute he is able, then we have to go with a similar QB, running a similar offense. If Braxton can't handle the college game yet, then throw in Guiton.

My order for QB's:
1. B. Miller
2. K. Guiton
3. T. Graham
4. J. Bauserman

It would not surprise me one bit if Guiton transfers after this season.

i dont think Graham is a drop back passer per-se...Kevin Noon this morning was even comparing him to being a more athletic Craig Krenzel...and i definitely wouldn't put Krenzel under the drop back passer category...I'm happy with anyone but Bauserman starting as long as they give us the best chance to win...this spring could end up being a pre-tryout before fall so i think everyone will be on their A-game...i would love for Braxton to come in and do awesome for the first 5 games but i think its going to be harder for the coaches to pull your QB of the future after he has been doing well...its going to be a very very interesting 5 games to start the season thats all i know...im glad im not that has to figure it out

I was not aware of this. The only thing I have heard about Graham is he can make all the throws. But I do like the sound of that. So with that in mind, and if it is true, then I think we should start Graham and then sprinkle in a little Braxton. Those two competing would be a fun battle to watch.

Graham is not equal to let alone quicker than Krenzel. Taylor is a lot closer to Boeckman but with better footwork.

Todd was a solid athlete though. Eventually the pressure up front caught up to him mentally as much as anything. If he had the 09 or 10 line during his senior year he would have held his spot and finished 1st team all big ten. Instead he was saddled with a line that couldn't handle Ohio.

I don't know what you've been watching the last three years, but Tressel has been turning Pryor into a pocket passer over time, which was the precise reason why Pryor even chose to come to Ohio State in the first place. There would be little, if any, change in the offensive scheme once Pryor returns...

Tressel's most successful QB Troy Smith was successful because he read defenses the best and made quick decisions and the right decisions, not because he had the best arm, accuracy or was most mobile. I think that is what Tressel will look for this spring/fall and I'am sure that's what we will get. I do worry about Bauserman getting the initial start because he is most SR.

You're right, we don't have a running QB! If you look at this offense it is a hybrid between a spread and a pro style offense. There has been many times TP has stood in the pocket too long when he should have ran. There are plays set up that if the first option is not there, then Pryor needs to make the plays with his legs. I agree that he has turned into more of a passer, but no way in hell I will ever have Pryor and drop back passer in the same sentence. Is he a better drop back passer now then he was when he got here? Of course! But Pryor's biggest asset is his legs. Just because he chose to come to OSU to be a drop back passer, does not mean he is one! Also, If you don't think there is going to be a HUGE change in the offense once Pryor returns then you have another thing coming my man. You better believe the first 5 games are going to be tressel ball at its finest!

They are called running backs, and they don't sit in the pocket. They made this shift the last two years after Purdue.

p.s. It's "another think coming" ... there's not another thing coming for you if you "thinK" incorrectly. A pack of wild bears will not be descending on you for thinking the wrong way, but you will need to think again.
