2011 Quarterbacks Discussion

From Ohio State pract today, looks like clear QB order for now: Bauserman, Miller, Guiton, Graham

I'm all for quarterback competition (as well as other positions), but I would like to hear a starter named within the next week or so. It's not good for the continuity of an offense when there is no consistency with who is operating under center. Whoever is deemed to be the starter is going to need the lion's share of the reps in order to not only get better, but to get some continuity going for the entire offensive unit. The more the reps are "equally split," the less work the eventual starter is getting.

I've been pulling for Braxton, as have most fans, but I have faith in the staff's evaluation of each guy, and whoever they name as the starter is going to lead the offense (and look damn good against that Akron defense...).

Is it September 3rd yet?

so "trust the coaches" unless they don't name a starter next week. got it.

:wink2:

Best case scenario: As camp winds down, we have two strong front runners pushing each other to be the best at their craft. And in the end, there is a clear-cut winner. You can't predict what's going to happen during the season and you want a steady back-up, just in case.

Worst case scenario: We have a stable of QB's that couldn't separate themselves from one another and we experiment in the beginning of the season.

The team needs a reassuring leader to take over the huddle. If you have 3/4 different guys trying to command the unit, you have the rest of the O trying to do their job and hope the step-in (although the most important piece) does theirs'.

Continuity went out the window last December. Regardless of how the QB situation shakes out, the #1 RB, #1 WR and #1 LT are all missing the first five games. I'd rather see them take their time if it leads to the right choice.

Bingo. That article claiming Fickell's choice of QBs could determine his future is hypebole. Even with with Miller as the starting QB from the season opener I don't see us going any worse than 9-3. Which, while normally disappointing, wouldn't be a disasterous season with all the drama and distractions over the last 3/4 of a year, and would likely let Fickell stay on. The most prudent move, in my mind, is to let Miller start from the git-go and let him grow.

I'm in the same boat. I say you sink or swim with Brax. Let him run the offense from the get-go and see if he can swim with the sharks. I think Fickell needs to test the waters with Brax and hope he can tread water. We always have a Mae West in Bauserman.

One thing is for certain: we need to have a guy and let him be the guy. None of this dual QB shit. I don't want the QB looking over his shoulder to see if he's getting pulled after a bad throw or something. To me, it's looking like Brax or Joe and whichever one wins needs to be supported whole-heartedly by the staff and teammates.

As long as Ohio State wins football games who cares? If the unthinkable happens, then we can revisit this.

I say start the rookie and let him develop under fire but with caution - don't want to get him killed.

Give him & the offense the reps necessary to ramp up into next year. This way we can allow another coach to win a NC in his 2nd season.

If two guys separate themselves and they are very very very close......then you have to play them both.....and see if one elevates their game as the season goes on. I trust Luke and the staff will do what is best for the team. Go Bucks

I agree. Let's trust the coaches on this one.

Also, they're called doctors.

I say whoever starts, he gets extra pads to make him stronger.

Luke's way of handling this makes sense. Early on give all of them equal reps and as you get farther into the practices they adjust the reps up/down. Last couple weeks QB's #1 and 2 will work exclusively with the #1 offense; QB's 3 and 4 will not be spending time with the #1 offense. Scout team QB will be the one QB which more closely resembles our opponents QB. Season starts and you see how each quarterback reacts to game conditions and make the adjustments to playing time by their play.

Sure, if they're both sophomores. If the two players are a senior and a freshman, you play the freshman every time unless you plan to redshirt him.
