2011 Big Ten Leaders Division Race

A look at the schedules for the teams in the Leaders division.

One fact not mentioned is that tOSU is the only team in the division to play 2 non-conference games with BCS schools.

Ohio State is going to lose 3 times?? Against who?

I'd say 9-3 is closer to a worst case scenario:

  • Akron - WIN
  • Toledo - WIN
  • @Miami FL - WIN (worst case - lose)
  • Colorado - WIN
  • Michigan State - WIN (worst case - lose)
  • @Nebraska - 50/50 (worst case - lose)
  • @Illinois - WIN
  • Wiscy - WIN
  • Indiana - WIN
  • @Purdue - WIN
  • Penn State - WIN (worst case - lose)
  • @TSUN - WIN
I can't see us losing 3 games. There are maybe 5 games that aren't shoe-ins, and there's no way we won't do better than win 3 of the 5. I think OSU wins the conference and inagural title game, but loses somewhere along the line, with us winning the tiebreaker against Wiscy.

I think the Legends division race is going to be much more interesting - Iowa, Michigan State, Michigan, Nebraska and heck, even Northwestern all have equal questions (to me) as to who can pull it off. I don't see any team coming out of their division with less than 2 losses, and we may see a 11-1 OSU against a 9-3 Nebraska or Michigan State.

At any rate, its going to be a GREAT year to see how the new B10 stacks up. OSU @ Nebraska will be a game for the ages, and I bet the TV revenues are going to go sky high.

NCAA denies Purdue receiver Smith a sixth year

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The NCAA has denied Purdue receiver Keith Smith a sixth year of eligibility after a knee injury prematurely ended his 2010 season.

Purdue coach Danny Hope expressed disappointment in a news release from the school on Monday.

Smith led the Big Ten with 91 catches during the 2009 season, and he caught 18 passes for 123 yards in two games last season before tearing the medial collateral and anterior cruciate ligaments in his right knee. He was hurt on a tackle in the fourth quarter of a 31-21 win over Western Illinois and had surgery on Oct. 18.

Ohio State

- Anything interesting happen this offseason? Even with the suspension of the Tattoo Five for five games, and with Jim ?Junk Folder? Tressel getting a nice little sabbatical for his shenanigans, it?s easy to forget that this still might be a national title contending team that should, at the very least, be in the hunt for the Big Ten title. The Buckeyes still have more talent than anyone else and they?re getting the star players back in time for the meat of the conference slate, so spring ball will be all about getting everyone through the storm of the first half of the season. Get to Lincoln, Nebraska at 5-0 or 4-1 with a decent performance against Miami, and it?ll be Game On.

Ohio State

- No excuses. It?ll be easy to blame problems this year on the suspensions and the off-the-field distractions, but the Buckeyes are still better than Miami, Nebraska, and everyone else on the schedule. The problem, though, as always, is that OSU will be everyone?s bull?s-eye game, and the craziness around the program could be just enough to allow an Illinois or a Penn State to pull off a win. No one is going to feel sorry for this team and no one is going to give it a break. Also, no one is going to predict a run to the national title. It?s the rare case that Ohio State can make itself out to be a bit of an underdog, in a way, but there still aren?t any excuses for a team this talented.

CFN.Key.Positions

Ohio State

Besides quarterback, defensive back. It?s Ohio State, so the second team secondary is full of NFL talent and is probably better than about 100 other defensive backfields, but the 2011 group will need some time and some seasoning. Three starters are gone including top cover-corner Chimdi Chekwa, and while there isn?t a passing game to worry about until October 1st against Michigan State, the faster the new secondary can come together, the better. Fortunately, there?s an all-star in the making in Orhian Johnson at safety to build around.

CFN.Questions

Ohio State

Who?s going to play quarterback? Obviously it?s Terrelle Pryor?s ship to sail come October 8th, but is it going to be Joe Bauserman under center as the steady, safe option or will super-recruit Braxton Miller be thrown to the wolves right away? Everyone in America but the Ohio State coaching staff knew that Pryor was a better option as a true freshman than Todd Boeckman, and the same might be true in this case. If it?s Miller, he?ll have two games against Akron and Toledo to figure out what he?s doing. It could be the biggest spotlight position battle in all of spring football.

Interesting. Good find, woof. I think they're overanalyzing the complexity of being Wisconsin's QB, particularly if their depth is bad enough to warrant a 1 year transfer.

Certainly didn't work out for Masoli although the resources (and talent) is greater at Wisconsin than Ole Miss.

Also from the article linked above:

Even if Wilson is able to reach an agreement with the Rockies that would allow him to leave the Tourists early to prepare for the 2011 college football season, there is no guarantee he would win a starting job.

UW's pro-style offense is complex and Wilson would have three weeks to learn the system and show he would be a better option than Budmayr, Brennan or Stave.

There are lots of people talking about this guy, mostly about him going to several D1A BCS schools (there's talk on HuskerBoard of him coming to Nebraska, even), but it isn't happening. The guy is playing baseball, and that's going to kill his chances of getting a starting gig with anyone who's even a remote contender for the MNC this year. That includes Wiscy and Nebraska, who "have a shot."

He's going to end up in a DII school and post ridiculous numbers against weak competition, boosting his draft stock. He's a fool if he goes to a D1A school.

Top QB recruit Gunner Kiel picks Indiana

Gunner Kiel, considered by Rivals.com and Scout.com to be the No. 1 quarterback recruit in the 2012 class, committed Tuesday to attend Indiana, Bob Gaddis, his coach at Columbus (Ind.) East confirmed.

Kiel led Columbus East to a 9-2 record last season while passing for 2,645 yards and 36 touchdowns. He picked Indiana over Alabama, Missouri, Oklahoma, among other schools.
And Michigan. Of course, the editor of GBW will tell you that he was scared off by the QB depth at Michigan.
