2011-2012 Men's Buckeye Basketball (Final Four Season)

I'm going by the words of his coach.

"He's got a much better understanding of how to play," Matta said. "He understands the importance of the defensive end of it. He understands the importance of the pass, the moving, the rebounding. I've been very, very pleased with his progress."

I think unless one of them is in foul trouble that Thomas, Sullinger and Buford are going to have to be dragged off of the court. Lots of minutes for those three along with Craft and Scott. It's the 5 position where minutes can be earned if someone can step up and play defense and do the dirty work if Sullinger spends significant time at the 4.

Again, JMO.

If Deshaun's defense isn't any better than it was last year, then I'd be on board with what Ninja is saying. Matta isn't going to leave a guy out there for long stretches who doesn't get it done on the defensive end.

I think we're going to see that he's vastly improved, however. I also think we're going to see him do a better job of creating the shot he wants rather than just taking the shot he has.

If those two aspects come to pass, then he's going to be a key feature of this team. Even as a Freshman with a somewhat limited game, when he was "on" he was unstoppable and could light the team up if they'd gone cold.

How you defend both Thomas and Sullinger with a player like Craft distributing the ball is going to give a lot of opposing coaches sleepless nights and heartburn.

Question: Does the OSU ticket office handle away game tickets or do you have to go to the host school to purchase them?

I am looking at driving down to Columbia from Charlotte for the OSU-USC game. I could always go the stubhub route but I prefer not to pay scalper prices. Went to South Carolina's athletic department site and all they are selling right now is season tickets...

Anybody have experience buying "away" tickets and would like to share their best practice experience????

Your act is stale.
My point, which apparently eluded everyone, is that we don't know yet how returning players might have developed since last season, we don't know what skill set incoming freshmen might have as it manifests itself against collegiate competition, and we don't know what motivation individual players might have to play strong defense, take predominantly good shots, and contribute to good team chemistry. It struck me that all the "ifs" being thrown about were of limited value in figuring out likely PT among this year's team. But lots of good thoughts were being presented in all these posts.

Apparently a bunch of people misunderstood my intent and got their underwear all twisted. I guess that intent was pretty unclear, and so my apologies. Maybe I should just have said, "Trust the coaches." The hoop coaches still qualify for that kind of trust, I think.

:ohwell: Mea culpa.

Bottom line is that, on pretty much every team there are a lot of "ifs" that crop up before play commences. Buckeyes are no different. But it's so nice that our "ifs" are at such a high, high level. GO BUCKS!

No harm Max.

We talk about "ifs" and "buts" in the preseason because this is a message board. We are all big time buckeye fans and this is all we have for right now.

I know I can't wait for jump ball, these "ifs" and "buts" are all I've got for 9 more days until we start to see some answers.

By the way,

Craft
Sibert
Buford
Sullinger
Williams/Ravenel

would be an ideal starting line-up with Scott and Thomas coming off of the bench although I ultimately think Matta will cave in and start Deshaun.

Lots of depth, lots of options this season.

Anybody want to throw out some PPG/RPG/AST/MINS prediction for the main 4-6 players?

Media Day

By Bob Baptist

ROSEMONT, Ill. ? Ohio State did not look the part of a top-five team nationally and a prohibitive favorite for another Big Ten men?s basketball championship.

Often yesterday during the conference?s media day at a suburban Chicago hotel, coach Thad Matta had one or two reporters interviewing him while other coaches, as well as commissioner Jim Delany, entertained more. Only two central Ohio media outlets attended the event.

?I like it,? Matta said with the smile of a man more concerned with leaving early to get home for practice.

It was not like everyone was otherwise engaged interviewing Jared Sullinger, who was voted preseason player of the year. The sophomore was a late scratch, forced to stay home to take a midterm exam.

The same exam also kept senior William Buford from attending. Sophomore Aaron Craft was obliged to speak for his teammates.

?I think Jared would laugh off (the honor), make a joke about it,? he said.
As for the Buckeyes being the choice, over Wisconsin and Michigan State, to win the conference title, Craft said they aren?t taking that seriously, either.

?Coach does a great job of (letting us know) what happened last year ultimately means nothing,? he said, ?other than the experiences we got
