2011-2012 Men's Buckeye Basketball (Final Four Season)

Does anyone know if the game against Walsh on Sunday is going to be viewable online? I believe I watched it on the Big Ten Digital Network last year, but that site is blocked here at work. If I remember correctly, that digital network was by subscription only and it was like $7 for a month or something close to that. I'm good with paying a couple of $$ to get my Buckeye basketball fix a few days early :oh:

I've been trying to figure this out for a couple weeks chilledog. I wish I could answer.

Another Q I have is does anybody know how much it costs to get it to the scrimmage? If it's not on TV or online, I'm gonna have to make the short trip up from Lancaster.

I'm not gonna wait til next friday to see Thad Matta's boys when they are suiting up on Sunday. Hell, I'm having trouble waiting til Sunday.

I wanna see how Craft and Scott look out there together and also what these freshmen look like in the OSU unis and how Sully and Deshaun's new tone look like.

Can we get a countdown to jump-ball?

Practice. We're talkin' practice!

Thanks to the Agonis Club's annual fund-raiser for the Ohio State men's basketball team, and to the event's master of ceremonies, Ron Stokes, I had the chance to watch the Buckeyes practice for just shy of 90 minutes late this afternoon and early this evening. It was the first and probably only practice I'll see this season, and it was enlightening.

First, you're probably wondering about lineups. Here's what I saw, with the constants in the Red jerseys being Aaron Craft, William Buford and Jared Sullinger. This is in the order I saw them, not necessarily the starting lineup first:

1. Craft, Jordan Sibert, Buford, Sullinger, Evan Ravenel.
2. Craft, Sibert, Buford, J.D. Weatherspoon, Sullinger.
3. Shannon Scott, Craft, Buford, Deshaun Thomas, Sullinger.
4. Craft, Sam Thompson, Buford, Thomas, Amir Williams.
5. Craft, Lenzelle Smith, Buford, Thomas, Williams.
6. Craft, Smith, Buford, Sullinger, Williams.

Trey McDonald and walk-on guard Alex Rogers were the only two that did not get time in the Red rotation.

Impressions:

- The lineup I liked best? No. 3. Very good flow to the offense.

- The player I liked best? Smith. His wingspan of 6-feet-9 1/2 inches is 6 inches more than his listed height, and he took advantage of it to disrupt the passing lanes on defense and make several tip steals during drills and full-court scrimmaging. He also made some shots from the perimeter, something he'll need to do if he wants to emerge as the fifth starter or first guard off the bench.

It IS viewable on the Big Ten Digital Network, and there is a code for a free-month trial. (check out this tweet: http://twitter.com/#!/BBaptistHoops/status/131363644347916289)
Ticket's are available too, both from Ohio State and on Stubhub. Lower bowl is like $16 if I remember correctly.

In fear of trying this right before game time i went to BTN.com and tried to watch some of the exhibitions last night. when trying to click on a game it showed that a email address/username and password is required. If anyone knows where to put this code in and could walk me/everyone through it would be awesome.

Did anyone hear anything about the scrimmage with Ohio on Sunday? Seems like last year word got out about the Baylor scrimmage even though it was a media blackout.

This is some of what I got out of the scrimmage.....

Ohio State scrimmaged Ohio............
Ohio State won two of the three periods against OU. The third period they lost they played reserves.

Jordan Sibert looked good, observer felt he would play ahead of Lenzelle Smith.

Jared Sullinger kind of went through the motions, didn't dominate like he will during the season.

Ohio State really did a good job on the offensive end, and was able to score pretty much at will.

Both of the young bigs were solid, Trey McDonald and Amir Williams.

1. Craft
2. Sibert
3. Buford
4. Thomas
5. Jared

Jared scored 22 and had 11 rebounds within a game's worth of minutes.

The offense looked good and the defense looked good when motivated to hunker down.

Scrimmage scoop
NCAA Division I Manual
Bylaw 17.3.3 First Contest

17.3.3.1 Exceptions. The following basketball contests (games or scrimmages) are permitted prior to the first
contest dates specified under Bylaw 17.3.3:

(a) Practice Scrimmage. An informal practice scrimmage with outside competition . . . may occur at any point during the permissible playing and practice season provided it is conducted in privacy and without publicity or official scoring. Individuals other than athletics department staff members and those necessary to conduct a basketball practice scrimmage against outside competition may not be present during such a scrimmage. The institution shall ensure that the scrimmage is free from public view.

But people talk.

I cast some lines in the water this week for details on the Buckeyes' "secret scrimmage" Sunday against Ohio University in Value City Arena, which, by NCAA rule, the participants can not talk about publicly. This is what I found out:

- The teams played three 20-minute periods. Ohio State won the first and second, the latter by a narrower margin than the first. The Bobcats, coached by former Matta assistant John Groce, won the third. Scores were not available. Both sides substituted during each period.

- The Buckeyes started the first period with this lineup, from 1 through 5: Aaron Craft, Lenzelle Smith Jr., William Buford, Deshaun Thomas, Jared Sullinger.

- Their best lineup, seemingly, which confirmed what I saw with my own eyes at practice Tuesday night, was with Shannon Scott in the backcourt instead of Smith.

- For now, the unsettled piece in the starting lineup is the second guard. Smith was the better defender. Scott was better on offense, played smart, shot the ball well and gives the team another ball-handler on the floor besides Craft. If it's either-or, my educated guess is coach Thad Matta will lean toward the better defender. But if Scott is better than Smith overall, offense plus defense, it could be Scott. The third player in the equation is Jordan Sibert.

- Also confirming what I saw at practice: Thomas was Thomas. "You know what you're going to get from Deshaun. He's going to shoot open shots." He's also going to get his hands on rebounds. Ohio State will try to get Thomas shots at times by playing an inside-out game with him on the same side of the floor as Sullinger, taking advantage of the perimeter help opponents will have to give on Sullinger in the post.

- And Buford was Buford, curling off screens to get jump shots or create space to get in the lane for his patented pullup jump shot.

- Sullinger played mostly inside. It likely will be a three-man rotation on the block with Evan Ravenel and Amir Williams coming off the bench to allow Sullinger to occasionally roam outside, where defenses must honor his three-point threat. Ravenel rebounded well and played his role well in general. Williams has a chance to contribute as a rebounder and shot-blocker because of his athleticism and 7-3 wingspan, but he has work to do on offense. He's the only candidate to replace Dallas Lauderdale as a shot-blocker.

See for yourself what they look like Sunday in their one and only exhibition game against Walsh at 2 p.m. in Value City Arena. The game will not be on television but will be live-streamed on BTN.com.
