2011-2012 Men's Buckeye Basketball (Final Four Season)

-Sibert looked really good.

-I know it was only an exhibition but it says alot about Smith's improvement from last season that Matta decided to start him.

-I've saw Ninja post a few Sam Thompson updates that he was looking good...but man he still surprised me. I was kind of expecting him to be like 'Spoon - more of an athlete than a basketball player, but the kid has a pretty impressive offensive game. If he sticks around for a few years he is going to be amazing.

The way I saw the scrimmage. ( through the horible BTDN broadcast)

I was very impressed with Lenzelle and Sibert. Absolutely improved all-around. Lenzelle is not only thiner, but much quicker.

Smith was a beast on the boards consistently grabbing the rebound above the rim. As a SG, with a 6'10" wingspan, he could average 4-5 Rebs/game depending on his minutes. His lateral q and hops were through the roof.

Sibert looked great with his jumper. He had a very quick release, as did Buford obviously.

Thomas looks to be in great shape. He'll be better than he was today, and he wasn't bad today.

I was not entirely impressed with Amir Williams though he did block and alter some shots.

Ravenel was very good. He was slimmer and quicker than I expected. With the poor definition of BTDN it was hard to tell that it wasn't actually Lauderdale out there. I expect the Raven to be ahead of Amir on the depth chart, I think Matta does too. He also showed good hands.

Scott looked nervous. He rushed on both ends of the court numerous times and made mistakes but I expect the game to slow down for him within the month as Matta eases him along. Had extreme quicks.

Although McDonald might/should RS, I was impressed with his athletism and wide body. He's going to be a bruiser in the lane over his career. Definitely a B1G player/body.

Most impressive/surprising to me was Weatherspoon. I don't have the official box score but he shot 6-7 from the field and even made a good looking 3. He was playing so well on offense that he actually scored a bucket for Walsh. He also played hard and athletic on D.

Sam Thompson was solid. Inconsistent, but solid. You can see the potential oozing out of his sneakers.

Craft was Craft. Stud.

I can't wait to see how they fare against stiffer competition.

Luke Winn/SI.com: Big Ten Primer

Player of the Year

Jared-Sullinger-Ohio.State.gif

Ohio State's Jared Sullinger is likely to close the season much stronger.
Greg Bartram-US PRESSWIRE

Jared Sullinger, Ohio State
Sullinger's space-creating, extrasensory backside was such an asset last year that it inspired entire articles, including one in which he said, "my butt is my best friend." He shed 15 pounds after a freshman season in which he averaged 17.2 points and 10.2 rebounds, but assured me he retained his most valuable bulk.
"That weight went nowhere," Sullinger said. "I was playing open gym against [former Buckeye forward] Terrence Dials and he was like, 'Boy, you lost all that weight but you've still got that [butt]. I said, 'Hey, I can't help it.'"
More stamina plus same backside sounds like a formula for a 20-and-12 season, and a run at national Player of the Year honors, too.
Breakout Candidate

Deshaun Thomas, Ohio State
In his short stints of playing time last season, Thomas actually took a higher percentage of shots (30.5) than did Sullinger (25.2) or William Buford (26.8), and was remarkably efficient, with a 115.0 rating. Now that Thomas is likely to start, he shouldn't be commandeering a larger portion of the Buckeyes' offense than Sullinger. But Indiana's all-time prep scoring leader will get a fair share of shots. Shooting is what he's hard-wired to do.
Conference Power Rankings

1. Ohio State
The Buckeyes have a sure thing in Sullinger, but plenty of questions around him. Will senior shooting guard William Buford -- whom we last saw going 2-of-16 against Kentucky in the Sweet 16 -- be a more efficient scorer and consistent defender? Will sophomore defensive stopper Aaron Craft run the point 80-90 percent of the time, or will coach Thad Matta put freshman Shannon Scott on the floor to pilot the offense? If it all comes together, OSU can make a national title run.

Ohio State vs. Walsh will replay on BTN at 4:30 P.M. Eastern today.

Just watched the first half. Sully is a beast. Craft looks like he's going to be even more annoying to opposing fans than last year.

Love Sam Thompson's game. It's going to be tough to keep him on the bench. Spoon looks like he can earn some minutes also.

I liked Thompson the best of the new guys but I think the post players were in and out so much I didn't get a good enough look at them.
I did like Weatherspoon and Smith.
Scott needs a lot of work until the game slows down for him.
Overall we gonna be BAAADDD!

I really hope we get to see Ross later on in the season. His highlight tape was sick. The addition of him would all but cement our place as a number 1 seed in the tournament. I know we'll probably make it there without him, but I'm curious how he would fit in with this group.

Man, there is some serious length on this team right now. Reminds me of the Georgetown team that beat OSU in the round of 32 back in 2006. Just a slew of long-armed athletic guys. When they start playing defense together, they are going to be some kind of tough.

Some really good rebounders on this team, too. A lineup with Craft, Smith, Thompson, Thomas, and Sully would be a bear to go against on the boards. All above average rebounders for guys their size.

Here's hoping Sibert can continue to shoot the ball well. There will need to be another legitimate shooter besides Buford. I'm still not sold on Thomas or Craft as consistent shooters.

I think Sibert will be very solid shooting the ball this season and for the rest of his career at OSU. Not only because his shots were falling the other night, but he had such a quick trigger with great form on his jump shot.

His shot is starting to look a lot like Buford's. I wonder if Buford took him in and worked out with him all off-season?

Sibert doesn't have the length or rebounding skills that Zelle has, but if he can consistently knock down his jump shot and play solid defense, he'll find some solid PT.

On a side note. Damn Lenzelle's body shape is completely different now. He came out of HS as a 6'3"/240 linebacker/PG and he's developed his body and grown into a 6'4"/205 SG/SF with a 6'10" wingspan. He's a helluva good rebounder for a perimeter player.

I like what Matta's doing early on with the rotation. I don't think Sibert is a guy that would transfer, but Zelle could've been. Even if he only plays Lauderdale type minutes just having him in the starting role helps massage his ego. Especially until Scott develops.

My thoughts:
-Even though I've seen numerous of his HS games, I didn't expect Sam Thompson to look this good. I thought his thin frame would hold him back. Still think that might be a problem against Big Ten teams, but still very impressed. He has every tool other than strength.
-SPOON! Nice to see Matta let him loose. Between him and Thompson I'm surprised they don't have a backdoor alley-oop set in. Seriously, it'll get us a few easy buckets against less athletic teams (aka, big ten teams). I hope Weatherspoon gets at least 6-8 minutes a game, although that might be wishful thinking.
-Free throws. Hopefully that was more of an exhibition game problem, and not a legit problem.
-Too many 3's from Sully. Look, I know you can shoot, I know you can do it all. But we need your butt in the paint.
-We're going to miss Diebler's pass into the post to Sully. There was like 3 missed opportunities because of poor interior passes.

Had a couple of other thoughts but these seemed to stick out.

I am a little concerned here also because some of the big guys did not look very comfortable shooting their freebies Monday. Hopefully, this will improve as we play more games.

.

I have been meaning to bring up this point as well. I know that Sullinger can shoot from the outside, I would rather see him pass the ball to one of our outside shooters like Buford, Thomas, and other perimeter guys. I guess it's all right for him to have some fun during the preseason but when we get into the meat of the schedule I want him down low where he can do real damage and not on the outside. He can practice his outside shooting with Chris Jent during free time.
