2010 Winter Olympics tidbits

Serious shoutout to the Nordic Combined team...no medals in 86 years, then Spillane drops 3 silvers and DeMong gets the gold today. Was great to see a 1-2 US finish on cross-country skis :banger:
That was pretty amazing... and might have been just enough to keep the US at the top of the medal tables too as the US is ahead of the Germans by 6. The US should get a medal in men's hockey and have a possibility of a couple in slalom. Oh, and Apolo Ohno has two races tonight... hopefully he medals in both events (500m, 5000m relay).

The US is in striking distance of some records, too.

  • The US record for total medals in a single Winter Olympics is 34 (2002 - Salt Lake City)
  • The US record for total gold medals in a single Winter Olympics is 10 (2002 - Salt Lake City)
  • The record for total medals by any country in a single Winter Olympics is 36 (Germany - 2002 - Salt Lake City)
  • The record for total gold medals by any country in a single Winter Olympics is 13 (USSR - 1976 - Innsbruck; Norway - 2002 - Salt Lake City)
Right now the US has a count of 8-12-12 for a total of 32. To get to 13 gold medals is the longest of longshots at this point. They'd have to win every event they have a reasonable contender in. I think the total medals records are in reach though, and if things fall the right way, so too the US record for total golds.
