2010 Winter Olympics tidbits

Whatever damage Ohno may have suffered as a result of the late crash it does not approach the benefit he has received from similar incidents over the years (up to and including the bogus DQ of the Koreans this year).

I don't believe the contact was what made the Canadian fall, but that's short track.

i think that's part of ohno's genius. he does not place himself in peril as often as other skaters and, therefore, can take advantage of the many mishaps.

The US is in striking distance of some records, too.

  • The US record for total medals in a single Winter Olympics is 34 (2002 - Salt Lake City)
  • The US record for total gold medals in a single Winter Olympics is 10 (2002 - Salt Lake City)
  • The record for total medals by any country in a single Winter Olympics is 36 (Germany - 2002 - Salt Lake City)
  • The record for total gold medals by any country in a single Winter Olympics is 13 (USSR - 1976 - Innsbruck; Norway - 2002 - Salt Lake City)
Right now the US has a count of 8-12-12 for a total of 32. To get to 13 gold medals is the longest of longshots at this point. They'd have to win every event they have a reasonable contender in. I think the total medals records are in reach though, and if things fall the right way, so too the US record for total golds.

The US now has 34 medals, and are guaranteed at least silvers in men's hockey and men's pursuit speed skating (where 3 guys skate in a pack on the 400m track and the last one to cross gets the official time).

They also lead the 4-man bobsled after 2 runs, and the women's pursuit speed skating made the semis (where 1 victory in either of their next 2 races will gain a medal), so there's a very good chance of reaching 38.

The hockey gold medal game could determine which team ends up with the most gold medals, as Canada now has 10, Germany 9, and the USA and Norway 8.

anyone else think the south korean should have been dq'd at the end of the relay?? there was more contact there (with him holding back ohno) then waht ohno was dq'd for

In short track, the person in front gets the benefit of the doubt over the person trying to make the pass.

That's why it was so frustrating to see Americans racing from the back last night. You put yourself in a position where you have to make a risky move at the end, and if there's mutual contact the guy trying to make the pass is more likely to get DQed over the guy trying to maintain his position.

If you watched Joannie Rochette skate last night without getting choked up, you have no heart.

I have no heart.

this is some of the most compelling video i've seen all olympics. the camera is focused solely on sven kramer's coach as he signals his skater to change lanes, confirms the mistake, and then agonizes in between passes. the coach continues to instruct kramer in spite of knowing full well that the great race will be all for naught. the whole video is an absolute must to watch.

well, usa now stands at 36 medals. tomorrow's gold medal hockey match will result in a new overall record. canada has 13 gold medals, though, which we won't catch.
