2010 U.S. Army All-American Bowl - January 9, 1 PM EST, NBC

How important are these AA game / signing day announcements?

The Ohio kids have been crucial, but I think everyone views those in a different light than the OOS supers chased by everyone and keeping everyone on the edge of their seat.

Should we enjoy the rollercoaster of recruiting? Sure.
Will we get too attached to some prospects? Of course.
Do our emotions exaggerate their importance? I think so, see below.

AA game verbals, last 5 years.

Minor loss:

  • Tajh Boyd - Played games and his family may have been a headache had he come here. Pryor's development lessens his importance, and Braxton can complete that.

  • Josh Jenkins - Good player who stayed home. OSU landed 3 lineman at least as good in that class, and had 2 more a month later (Mewhort, Hall - unofficially).

  • Joe Barksdale - LSU promised him he wouldn't be an OT. He played there as a true freshman. Very raw at DT, better OT prospect, is it better to lose or win via bait & switch?

  • Deonte Thompson - Speed merchant, flashy recruit. Underachieved so far, and has been outplayed by Dane Sanzenbacher and Devier Posey.

  • Ben Martin - Lofty praise in HS, caused a meltdown when he got away. Good player, but he's no Cameron Heyward (same class).

  • David Ausberry - Big prototypical WR. Another in a growing line of big bodied busts at SC.

  • AJ Wallace - Long recruitment, previously an OSU lean. Mediocre career at PSU. Outplayed by Chekwa & Coleman in that class.

  • Rico McCoy - Another game player. Good player at Tenn, but nothing OSU doesn't develop annually.

  • Jason Gwaltney - All-everything RB in HS, merely a headache in college. Washed out at WVU. Cleared landing strip for Beanie.

Medium / Major loss:

  • Major Wright - Very talented. While our thin/young safeties matured in 07, Wright struggled as a true frosh. Good years in 08/09 when our safeties were good. Probably going pro, so no help after Russell/Coleman. Wright would probably supplant Russell, but only provide a minor upgrade over a solid 4 year contributor in AR.

  • Anthony Davis - Stayed home with upstart Rutgers, fine OT prospect, going pro early. Could have eased OL struggles in 07 & 08.

  • Maurice Wells - One we actually won, and he was probably OSU's least effective RB from 05-09 that had a scholarship and didn't transfer.

Now make no mistake, these were obviously very good prospects, and OSU wanted them. The point isn't to downgrade their ability, but show how little those "losses" mattered in the grand scheme of things.

It also echoes the old saying, it's not the ones you miss that hurt you, it's the ones you get. Mo Wells was a good teammate and a hard worker, but he wasn't the right back for our system. You can replace the McCoy's that go elsewhere. You can't cut loose players who don't become the player you anticipated (unless you're in the SEC).

Shariff Floyd is an excellent prospect who deserve his accolades and the ensuing celebration for one of our fanbases. But in the grand scheme of things, his decision is about entertainment more than success for OSU & their fans.

With the departures of Rocco, Flash and Gibson, where does that put our scholly list at? Last I heard Tress said they were looking at taking 20 guys. Is that still the case or can we take one or two more?

:osu:

I think the staff anticipated all of this when the 20 number was thrown out personally...that was a fairly recent statement.

In terms of AA announcements, the reason we likely do fail in the bowl is the "look at me" mentality of many of the announcements. Some are low key and direct but many times, they really aren't JT type guys announcing. With the addition of Hankins, losing Floyd wouldn't be such a big deal. I personally think Hankins has top 100 potential and could be a game changer that we haven't seen at DT since Peterson and Wilkinson. However, grades have reportedly been questionable with both and there was also questions of Hankin's motor, so getting both would be nice. If not, Chris Rock and Donovan Clark look pretty impressive at DT next year.

Pretty darn cool... Could be a nice handful of Buckeyes right there... At least 2-3 AA Buckeye starters. Great to read that Bryant has been playing very well.

I wanna land those guy's tomorrow, but it's almost worth is to see the meltdown that's going to ensue if we don't land them. I've got my pop corn ready...

You may want to take a look at our scholarship breakdown chart...

Wow... Nice chart. Not that it matters, but shouldn't Keith Wells be in the Freshmen column? Didn't he redshirt this year (so I heard) after playing last year? So it would be just like Stoneburner who redshirted last year, but played this year, right?

Anyways, Go Bucks!!! Hopefully we'll pull in some recruits during the AA game so I don't have to avoid the internet for a few hours, in an attempt to not get depressed by suicidal Buckeye fans.
