2010 U.S. Army All-American Bowl - January 9, 1 PM EST, NBC

I don't follow this stuff like LJB and others do, but I can say that a review of FSU recruiting rankings since - say - 5 years before the 2009 season - should reflect the mediocrity of FSU football the next several years. But my memory tells me that the Noles had decent recruiting hauls during those years, or at least not as dismal as their records have been during that time frame. The difference maker? Coaching. FSU failed to coach them up, failed to improve the play or draft stock of what were supposed to be some phenomenal athletes. Moreover, the lack of a family atmosphere, moral guidance and a staff that required discipline led to many of those vaunted recruits leaving due to personal or academic problems....on-line music course or no!

Less regarded athletes under the tutelage of Tressel and Co. not only would outperform FSU, they DID outperform FSU during that time period.

(Now my only problem is Jwins or LJB backing up statements that I have no data for :p)

Here you go, Gator. This is according to Scout:

Year / Class Rank / Avg. Stars(# of recruits)

FSU
2009 / 18 / 3.43(21)
2008 / 8 / 3.27(30)
2007 / 33 / 3.15(20)
2006 / 12 / 3.26(31)
2005 / 3 / 3.82(22) x
2004 / 4 / 3.23(26) y
2003 / 12 / 3.30(20) x
2002 / 6 / 3.71(21) x

Miami
2009 / 24 / 3.37(19)
2008 / 3 / 3.33(33)
2007 / 13 / 3.72(18)
2006 / 14 / 3.41 (22)
2005 / 12 / 3.76(17)
2004 / 3 / 3.35(26)
2003 / 6 / 3.48(21)*
2002 / 4 / 4.05(21)*

VaTech
2009 / 41 / 2.77(22)
2008 / 20 / 2.81(31) x
2007 / 25 / 3.00(25) x
2006 / 31 / 2.68(31)
2005 / 18 / 3.18(25) y
2004 / 26 / 2.82(22) x
2003 / 21 / 2.65(23)*
2002 / 45 / 2.20(20)*

Georgia Tech
2009 / 32 / 2.95(21) x
2008 / 37 / 2.90(20) y
2007 / 15 / 3.35(20)
2006 / 49 / 2.57(14)
2005 / 48 / 2.53(19)
2004 / 35 / 2.42(24)
2003 / 34 / 2.62(21)
2002 / 51 / 2.25(12)

UNC
2009 / 6 / 3.21(29)
2008 / 30 / 3.37(19)
2007 / 14 / 3.08(24)
2006 / 25 / 2.68(28)
2005 / 34 / 2.50(24)
2004 / 18 / 2.76(25)
2003 / 13 / 2.77(26)
2002 / 35 / 2.33(21)

* Not yet a member of the ACC
x = conference champion
y = runner up

That should give you a rough idea. Compare what VaTech and GaTech have done since 2005 with inferior recruiting classes comprising their active rosters during those years. I could well have thrown Boston College into this, too, and they would have compared favorably to FSU since the latter won its last ACC title, despite the fact that FSU had far superior recruiting classes in relevant years. But as underutilized as talent has been in Tallahassee, just look at what catastrophes have repeatedly played out in Coral Gables and Chapel Hill! Pathetic.

Agree completely. It is not bashing the coaches or anything of that nature. And yes I agree that most of the time the "Star" rankings are over rated. But when a kid who is considered "Unblockable" against the top level of competition out there chooses another school it is ok to be frustrated.

Will we be fine without him? Of course. But if he would have picked tOSU we would all be ecstatic. That is my only point.
And in 2006 we were "ecstatic" with Robert Rose who was "unblockable" at his Army AA game.

No one is saying that getting top talent is unimportant - and the coaches are far more "frustrated" than we are when they miss on a recruit - but you never really know what the "top talent" is until you get the kids on campus. Ohio State has signed five star kids who hit their ceilings when they were sixteen years old, who were too stupid to understand the play book, who couldn't stay out of trouble off of the field, or who just weren't very talented. Some kids get injured, some kids get homesick, some kids lose the desire to play the game, some kids are not well-liked by their teammates, some kids pout because they aren't stars from day one, some kids can't handle college life, some kids put on too much weight, some kids can't carry enough weight, some kids are drunks, some kids are pot heads, some kids are juicers ... no matter how much due diligence you put in (and the coaches put in far more due diligence than any fan or recruitnik will ever do), you never really know what you have until you get a kid actually into your program and see what he can (and is willing) to do.

Wipe the slate clean on NLOID and consider every recruit a zero-star college football player, and you'll have a better perspective on the whole process.

Not Jwins or LJB so I can't help you there gator.

But if we look at ND, I believe that in 2006, 2007, and 2008, their classes were #5, #11, and #2 respectively. Those classes would have been seniors, juniors, and sophomores respectively for the 2009 season. Considering the favorable schedule that ND had in 2009, coupled with those recruiting classes, it is no wonder the awesome season that ND had :p

You look to good ole boy Bobby, I look to He-Who-Eclipses-the-Sun, as my example of failure to develop. And that developing talent is probably more important than what recruiting services have to say about the unproven talent.

Aside from USC's mind-boggling run from 2003-2007, we stack up well against any of the teams you mentioned.

Recruiting rankings: Rivals/Scout

............. 2002 .. 2003 .. 2004 .. 2005 .. 2006 ..
Ohio State ... 5/3 .. NR/25 .. 9/11 . 12/7 .. 12/13

................2002 ....2003.. 2004 .. 2005 .. 2006
FSU ............. 6 ..... 12 .... 4 ..... 3 ..... 12 ....

Here is what I meant. Thanks for the stats. FSU had mad success in recruiting, as good or slightly better than tOSU. Yet the results of bad coaching were readily seen in the years that followed, as y'all played in back to back BCSCGs and FSU fell to 7-6 type years.

Ranking was nice, but FSU lacked coaching. Not a problem in Columbus.

Does anyone else think that 2010 could end up being a lot like 2007?

Here's an in depth review of the 2007 class courtesy of LordJeffBuck: link.

A 'bad' class this year could just be setting up a huge class next year, and Tressel knows it and is primarily focused on getting guys that he knows will be his type of players because he knows he is going to land some huge players next year.

There are a billion reasons not to freak out about recruiting, and that is just another one. Missing out on 'must get' guys this year just opens up the door for 'must get' guys next year who are a little less interested in all of the attention and a little more interested in being Buckeyes.

Anybody remember Jason Gwaltney? That was one of my first experiences in following recruiting and he was a 'must get' that all of the usual suspects were freaking out about.

Ohio State ended up missing out on him, but a few months later a kid named Beanie Wells committed to Ohio State.

It stings missing out on big name players, but recruiting goes beyond the current class.

EXACTLY. I remember an article a little bit ago that was interviewing David Aromashodu and he was talking about his recruiting process. He said he was deciding between Auburn and tOSU, and Tressel told him that he needed an answer because if not he had to go talk to his backup plan, a kid named Santonio Holmes. This situation could very well happen with Floyd (who knows, Hankins?) or Anderson (Roby?).
