2010 TSUN News offseason (football)

Michigan's first opponent: Connecticut opens practice with great expectations

Connecticut opened football practice Monday afternoon with a call from defensive captain Scott Lutrus to get ready to do big things in the Big House.

The Huskies return 15 starters from a squad that went 8-5 last season and won the PapaJohn?s Bowl. They are expected to contend for the Big East championship this season, after opening on the road on Sept. 4 at Michigan inside its newly renovated 110,000-seat stadium.

?Since we realized we were playing Michigan, this has been on our mind,? junior tailback Jordan Todman said. ?When we were working out in the summer we put their helmet up in the weight room to remind us of what we are working for.?

The Huskies joined what is now the BCS eight years ago and have been to three consecutive bowls under head coach Randy Edsall. Last year, their five losses came by a total of 15 points, and three of those occurred after the stabbing death of cornerback Jasper Howard.

They snapped that losing streak with a signature victory by beating Notre Dame in South Bend.

That double-overtime win impressed the biggest addition to this year?s team, D.J. Shoemate, who transferred from USC this summer to join his high school quarterback Johnny McEntee, a backup for the Huskies.

Extra points

After the first practice, Rodriguez said he thought the team overall is in good shape.
"Quite a few guys are in very good shape, I think there's a handful of guys that are OK shape and a small handful of guys that aren't ready to play Division I football," he said. "Our goal and expectation is to get everybody up to the top level, and we've got a few weeks to do that. If they don't do that, they won't have the opportunity to wear the winged helmet come Sept. 4."
Weren't they all in great shape last year? And the year before? I mean, Barwis (!!!!!!!!!!11!!!1!!11!!) and all...

Rodriguez will be in Seattle Aug. 13-14 for the NCAA Committee on Infractions hearing.

Doesn't matter how great the conditioning program is, how the great the coaches are, etc if an athlete isn't willing to listen or put the hard work in.

Michigan-Alabama In Dallas In 2012 | mgoblog

Alabama-Michigan is your next neutral-site blockbuster - Dr. Saturday - NCAAF? - Yahoo! Sports

Seems like a nice idea, Big-Ten vs. SEC neutral site. Lets see where the programs (and their coaches) are in two years. But they are two highly prestigious teams, so its hard not to like the IDEA of it... even if it is TSUN.

Neutral? How in the hell is this neutral? Aside from the geographical advantage given away, Michigan is looking at an away game. St. Louis or Denver might be neutral, but that ol' Mason - Dixon Line cuts well north of Dallas.

What do you mean, "3 year crap"? If DickRod was producing like it was expected he would, he wouldn't be on the hot seat. Three years is enough to accurately gauge were the program is and where it's going.

Are you saying that the next coach should get at least 5 years, even if his first three are as pathetic as DickRod's (assuming this season is also going to be way below Michigan's normal standards)?

Your next hire should be given enough time to undone the damage DickRod has done, which will be at the very minimum three years. I'd say it should be a 4-5 year contract. Then again, what's DickRod's contract?

3 years can be too short in certain circumstances. I know a few coaches and one in basketball if they were measured in 3 years back in the day they would have been fired in today's world. I also meant that when our new coach comes in we shouldn't expect amazing results. Give him some years. If he wins anywhere between 6-8 games each season in his first 3 years don't just can him. That 4th year might be the one where Michigan wins 10 games or more. We shouldn't expect 10 wins off the bat unless that coaching staff has a Chuck Norris coach.

I believe it's in the constitution somewhere that none of the major SEC teams are allowed to travel north of the Mason-Dixon line.

So THAT's why RR has a combined 1 win in October and November in his 2 seasons at UM. I knew it couldn't be because the staff is deficient.

First I hate RR and he is the main reason we are in this mess. I want him gone after this season.

2nd if you don't put the time in, you aren't going to get better regardless. It really is common sense. There are reports some players aren't putting in the time. You could have the best of everything.......but it is up to individuals to put in extra work if they want to get better regardless. Sure coaches can coach you up and players will get better. Player's also get better by watching film on their own, workout on their own. etc

I don't have my head in the sand so please go sit down.

Just sayin'...

If the game happens, it's actually not a bad move.

Michigan isn't Florida, California, Georgia, Ohio, or Pennsylvania - they have to go nationwide to recruit. A big game in Texas can't hurt things.

They scheduled those games against Oregon and got pounded. But how much talent can you pick up going into Oregon.

If you're going to get your ass kicked in an OOC game, why not do it in a talent rich state like Texas? At least get your name out there and get in front of some recruits - ya know?

what if he goes out and wins 8 games this season?

The NCAA gets him.

He's got investigations at Michigan and West Virginia, while seemingly minor, means he's a liability. The NCAA must have been seriously tied up with USC for 6 years. They have some extra time on their hands and it seems like they are looking for faster turnaround than with Bush/USC. In addition to RichRod's programs, they are in NC and looking into Miami for texting.

I don't think he's worth keeping around even if he wins 8 games (seemingly that means 8 regular season wins and a low bowl loss or 7 season wins and a low bowl win). If pigs start flying out of his ass like the lies fly out of his mouth and Michigan gets to a BCS bowl, he might be worth it. But he's still under investigation.

But...but...I thought tSUN's whole N2A mess was because players had already put in too much time...
