That's why the next coach needs 4-5 years instead of this 3 year crap. Especially if he is a Pro offense or west coast guy. Then Michigan can start recruiting like they used to and grab the top qbs, wrs, and big o-line guys around the country like they used to. Of course it will be harder since it's a down period for Michigan but it is a start. Who knows.......new coach might come in and win right off the bat. Very unlikely, but never underestimate the power of coaching.

Your statement is relative. 3 years seems like 5 with DickRod at the helm.

Have you seen our recruiting class this year so far? The past few recruiting classes have been ok.....but this year is just pathetic so far. I'm not trying to bash the players that are coming in. I think the one thing is that they seem to do well in the classroom and seem like outstanding young men. Players that will work hard and stay out of trouble. However, most of these guys don't have big time offers and are MAC/ C-USA type players. I haven't followed recruiting this year but it's not looking good. Michigan is not in a good position to even land a DT. Only one running back is interested in Michigan and that is D.Hart. No big time wrs are showing interest. All the qbs we have offered are already commited somewhere else. The o-line doesn't have a headliner. I know Hobbi from Arizona would be a huge get because he is regarded as one of the best guards in the country. Other than that it's not great. Brennan Meyer is a nice get. Still can't nab a linebacker and let Lawrence Thomas get away. How the [censored] do we let Gholston and Thomas get away is beyond me. D-backs we have a couple coming in. This class is shaping up to be one of the worst in recent memory on paper.

Well yeah NOW recruiting is going to take a hit, because Rich Rod has underachieved massively and kids know he's probably on his way out. They aren't going to commit 4 years to a coach when he's obviously on his way out and you have no idea who is going to be your coach. This is why you don't let this failure drag on much longer if your Michigan's AD. Still at this point it's only 1 class, so a new guy should be ok.

I am sure if they bring Harbaugh in, he'll get plenty of time to rebuild. If this were say Les Miles right now, everyone would still have his back because at least he is a "Michigan Man. Not that Harbaugh is on the top of my list, but I know he's on the top of others.

I think even a pro style or west coast guy should be able to take the pieces and turn them into winning seasons though, 7 or 8 wins. While you might give them 4-5 years to get to what's expected at Michigan (10 wins+BCS bowl) I don't care how young the players are they shouldn't be bottom feeding in the Big Ten when you recruit the type of athletes that Michigan does

For me, who gives a shit if someone can turn the offense around in short order. The defense is the part of the equation that is going to be ape-raped for a long to come. Without a defense to speak of in the Big Ten, it doesn't matter. It's just like with Tiller and the Purdue offense. Sure, they could put up points, but that was only because they had to try to outscore the opponent. Defense wins a helluvalot more than championships. It's the component to week by week success.

I actually think UM does have some quality players on D - just not nearly enough.

I remember when Anthony Schlagel was halfway through his first year at OSU and was asked to compare the teams in the Big Ten with Air Force and their opponents. Surprisingly, and with no reason to dis' his new conference, he said that the quality of the starters was not much different. The big difference was depth. Beyond the first team it dropped off significantly. When the inevitable injuries started happening was when the Air Force's of the world started dropping off.

This is the lesson Michigan is learning. And the lesson USC will learn in turn.

Football is a rough sport.

Michigan-Alabama In Dallas In 2012 | mgoblog

The following details are unconfirmed but of interest since they come from an established source:

  • Game is happening because a desperate Jerry Jones "overpaid."
  • Michigan will be the nominal home team (important mostly for TV rights) and receive more money.
  • There's no additional game scheduled and there may not be.
  • Jones might be well-positioned to provide some advice on HD scoreboards.

Seems like a nice idea, Big-Ten vs. SEC neutral site. Lets see where the programs (and their coaches) are in two years. But they are two highly prestigious teams, so its hard not to like the IDEA of it... even if it is TSUN.

What do you mean, "3 year crap"? If DickRod was producing like it was expected he would, he wouldn't be on the hot seat. Three years is enough to accurately gauge were the program is and where it's going.

Are you saying that the next coach should get at least 5 years, even if his first three are as pathetic as DickRod's (assuming this season is also going to be way below Michigan's normal standards)?

Your next hire should be given enough time to undone the damage DickRod has done, which will be at the very minimum three years. I'd say it should be a 4-5 year contract. Then again, what's DickRod's contract?

Word on gbw is that it is no longer a race for #1 QB, but more of a competition for #2. I'll be watching for a forceitin.com transfer "press release" before too much longer...

Is there a vBet up yet to project when Tater Tot will transfer?

I mean, the biggest question isn't if, it's when the press release will come out.

My guess is that it won't be until December--we know that Forciers transfer, but we also know that it takes them a while to read the writing on the wall.

I came up with something a little more complicated - you can bet on the combination for TSUN's 2011 opening football game - pick the head coach, starting QB, and whether or not Tate's still there.

Michigan will have permanent captains

Wolverines coach Rich Rodriguez said the seniors recently approached him about having permanent captains -- voted by the team -- in addition to the game captains Rodriguez and his staff select each week.
When Rodriguez took over in 2008, he went away from Michigan's tradition of season-long team captains. On Monday, though, following U-M's first practice, Rodriguez said the team has voted on the seniors who will represent them.
And the winners are?
Fifth-year seniors Stephen Schilling and Mark Moundros.
"This team chose two worthy seniors to represent this program as captains," Rodriguez said in a statement, shortly after meeting with the media. "Mark and Stephen are great representatives of the University of Michigan, both as a student and football players."
Rodriguez said he embraced the idea when the seniors brought it to him.
"They came up with a neat idea to pick two permanent captains before the season and let us have two game captains throughout the season which I had never thought of that concept," Rodriguez said.
"I like for all the seniors to have the ability to be a game captain to have ownership and leadership and all that. There are times when you have the right two, they can lead now and take charge of the team in the locker room and off the field."
Rodriguez said he'll continue his tradition of having the team vote on two permanent captains after the season if there are players worthy of the title.
This is a senior class Rodriguez said is extremely close and has been meeting all summer. He said it's a vocal group.
"They all know we have something to prove," said Rodriguez, whose teams have gone 8-16 his first two seasons. "I think it's going to be a great senior class."
Quarterback race is on

Sophomores Tate Forcier and Denard Robinson and freshman Devin Gardner are competing for the starting quarterback job, so who took the first snap of the first practice?
Rodriguez initially played coy.
"It's a secret," he said, smiling, before fessing up. "They all took snaps, they all took their first snaps together."
Forcier, who started every game last season, and Robinson, the backup a year ago who had a strong spring, should be key competitors. Gardner has reported to camp in "great shape" according to Rodriguez and will be challenging for the job.
Classes interrupt practice

Several players had to miss all or part of Monday's practice because of academics, Rodriguez said. Summer school ends in a week and a half.
Tailback Mike Shaw , whose academic status with the team will be determined at the conclusion of the summer semester, had to miss practice because, Rodriguez said, he was in class or a tutoring session.
Extra points

After the first practice, Rodriguez said he thought the team overall is in good shape.
"Quite a few guys are in very good shape, I think there's a handful of guys that are OK shape and a small handful of guys that aren't ready to play Division I football," he said. "Our goal and expectation is to get everybody up to the top level, and we've got a few weeks to do that. If they don't do that, they won't have the opportunity to wear the winged helmet come Sept. 4."
... Freshman punter Will Hagerup as expected was impressive and likely will be the starter.
... Michigan will have its first practice in pads Thursday, and the first two-a-day is Sunday.
... Rodriguez will be in Seattle Aug. 13-14 for the NCAA Committee on Infractions hearing.

At Michigan's first practice, no snap judgment on quarterback

Rich Rodriguez knew the question was coming: Who took the first quarterback snap in Michigan's first practice Monday?
He explained that all four quarterbacks took snaps simultaneously. He joked that his memory wasn't clear what happened after that.
But it was clear that sophomores Tate Forcier and Denard Robinson, along with Devin Gardner, are in a real competition for the job. (Walk-on Jack Kennedy was the fourth quarterback he referenced.)
"You can see obviously that Tate and Denard have some experience with the offense because things were smoother for them, but Devin's a real competitive guy, and he looks in great shape," Rodriguez said. "The hard part for us is to limit their contact because we don't want to get them beat up in August, but we've still got to get them ready to play."
He said he'd prefer to have one player distinguish himself and start the whole season, but also wants competition, as at every position.
Forcier's effort is surely being watched, given what teammate Troy Woolfolk told the Michigan Daily last week about Forcier's inconsistent attendance at voluntary summer workouts. Rodriguez was asked whether Forcier said anything about it to him.
"First off, I didn't ask his opinion," Rodriguez said. "Second off, I'm glad the seniors are taking ownership and leadership in this team. They want everybody to work as hard as they have or they are going to. ... Tate knows he's got a lot of work to do to prove himself, not just on the field, but off the field. I think he's a very competitive guy and willing to do that."
