2010 tOSU Running Backs discussion

I may be wrong but I have to admit that I am not happy with the running game I have seen.
Our passing attack has been more than adequate to keep the safeties back so where's the problem? I like to think that we have a good O line and running backs and we should be romping and stomping through the daisies.

I agree. The last few games of the season last year, the o-line did good things. This group has proven they can open holes. Now with the addition of more accurate passing by TP, it stands to reason that the running backs should be putting up better numbers.

I don't know. Maybe because we have these teams beat early and they're expecting the run? I haven't gone back and really studied any games yet, but what do you X's and O's experts think about the ineffectiveness of the running game?

Our running game didn't get going last year until midway through the season IIRC. We couldn't pick up third and one against Navy but by the time Illinois came around, we had found our groove. Rest easy, this team will be able to run the ball come week 6 and 7.

I've never heard anyone talk about Saine showing patients when he runs. Ever.

Yo, BKB, I can't find it for you right now but I have recently defended Saine, maybe in the Miami thread.

What I said was, a. if you DON"T show patience, people criticize you for not being "smart enough" to wait for your blocks to develop and b. any one who thinks B saine is a wussy runner should go back and watch the Rose Bowl. Many many strong runs, including 4th and 1, who do they go to? B saine, for 4 and a half yards.

Boom and Zoom know something that Berry and Hall don't know, or don't know as well: it's a long season.

I'm happy with them, plenty happy, and also feel good that we have several good backs waiting in the wings. No complaints here.

None of that disputes my previous statement of fact. I've never, and I do mean never, heard anyone say Saine - or any running back, for that matter - needs to show more patients.

Show them what? I mean... it's not even a complete sentence, for fuck's sake.

Go back and watch the Marshall game. One of the commentators talks about how Saine has patience as a runner and Herron just runs up the gut as fast as he can.

Is that a joke? When's the last time someone brought him down one on one without coming on a blindside blitz?

But he doesn't run LIKE him. They both get away from tacklers but in a different way. Young would juke people. Pryor runs over them or stiff arms them.

I kinda wish that Pryor would step up and take it up the middle more like Young did, but I'm more than happy with Pryor don't get me wrong.

He more than gets the job done and is an amazing runner. Just different styles.

Pryor is faster than he is quick, especially laterally. VY I would say is the opposite.

I was thinking the exact same thing. Probably a discussion for another thread but if anyone thinks Pryor is any less elusive than VY I guess our definitions of elusiveness are just different.

Yes TP is fast and probably more fast than quick but elusiveness is certainly not lost in his skill set. Not by a long shot.

Numbers offered without comment:

for 2005, VY averaged 6.8 ypc

TP:
2008: 4.5
2009: 4.8
2010: 4.6 so far

I don't take issue with saying VY is more elusive though I don't think there's a large gap either. It's the "TP? Not so much" comment that I don't get. Compared to who? Barry Sanders or Gale Sayers?

TP may not break off long runs but he breaks so many tackles and makes so many people miss. Easily the most difficult player to tackle I've seen since Young.
