2010 tOSU Running Backs discussion

I heard Chris Speilman after the game. He made two interesting comments:

1) "Looks like the coaches have determined that the Bucks are a 'throw first' team. They've decided that the running game just isn't there this year and there's nothing to be done about it at this point except keep working and hope something clicks."

2) "Maybe it's technique. I've talked to players from other teams and they claim that Ohio State's line doesn't come after you, or try and drive you off the line. they have this side step they take and try and influence the direction they want you to go."

Writing #2 down I wouldn't swear to just how accurate my memory is... I think that's what I said. Maybe someone on the board with more coaching knowledge could illuminate just what #2 is about.

I remember him saying that last year as well. Until they replace the offensive line coach we will have this conversation every year. (If you look back in the archives, you will see this.) We will also waste a lot of talent in the running back position.

We also have a problem in running back development. Is there a effort in teaching these backs to run straight ahead no matter what. As I watched the USC running backs for two years I noticed that they would cut and move 90 degrees to their right or left, make the defender miss and then go forward. Ohio State runners have to power their way past the first defender to get by them.

All I got to say is that the pass blocking has been tremendous.

Also a point made by Speilman on Saturday, that the pass protection blocking was good -- as for the sled, Bruce wasn't joking when he made the comment. He claimed that Bollman did not believe in the blocking sled. Perhaps a change in philosophy since the 08 season?

When the B10 network did their Camp preview at OSU they were using sleds.
