2010 tOSU Running Backs discussion

I heard Chris Speilman after the game. He made two interesting comments:

1) "Looks like the coaches have determined that the Bucks are a 'throw first' team. They've decided that the running game just isn't there this year and there's nothing to be done about it at this point except keep working and hope something clicks."

2) "Maybe it's technique. I've talked to players from other teams and they claim that Ohio State's line doesn't come after you, or try and drive you off the line. they have this side step they take and try and influence the direction they want you to go."

Writing #2 down I wouldn't swear to just how accurate my memory is... I think that's what I said. Maybe someone on the board with more coaching knowledge could illuminate just what #2 is about.

I don't know about the specific comment you're referring to in #2, but Speilman definitely was harping on the offensive line's inability to get push throughout the game. I agree with him, too. It seems like our offensive lineman often have a fair amount of size on the guy lining up across from them, but they rarely get that 2 yard push that good running teams like Bama seem to get out of their OL. I'm not sure why, but I have to think it is a technique problem. As the link posted on the last page that broke down the Illinois game film indicates, though, the backs--Saine in particular--haven't helped make the OLine look any better. To that end, I'm still in the camp that would like to see either Hall or Berry compliment Boom in the running game a bit more, and to primarily use Saine as a receiving back, where he's probably the best I've ever seen at OSU.

It's only a matter of time before berry and hall get more carries. Say what you want about garbage time, but berry looks so explosive running and is a homerun hitter that we don't have.
Yeah I agree. Berry could be for us what LaMichael James is for Oregon. They have similar abilities...

I would like to see Hall, Berry, and Hyde get more carries with the first team. I think they have found a place for Saine as the 3rd WR where he doesn't have to worry about reading holes. I've never really been impressed by Boom. I miss the days of big bruising backs that can turn a small hole into a 4-5 yard gain because the OL can use all the help they can get.
From what I can see the run game problems are a three headed mix between the backs, play calling, and production on the OL. I forget if it was last week or the week before, but JT called a Power on 4th and short. In that situation the DL and LB's are doing everything they can to get penetration. I know JT thinks you should be able to run Power in any situation, but to me that is one of his failings as a coach. Sure in a perfect world you should be able to run Power, but when the LB that the guard is pulling for shoots the hole it makes it almost impossible to gain yards on. In the example I'm thinking off the LB met the guard before he crossed the LOS, the center didn't get any movement on the DT and there was no hole. In short yardage I like zone and drive blocking plays. I don't know if OSU runs a trap, but that is one way to pull the guard and be able to handle a blitzing LB. The guard keeps his pads lower looking to kick out the first thing he sees rather than a slow pull where he is looking to wrap around and pick up the LB.
The OL needs to work as a machine. I think we are pretty good individually across the board, but it only takes one mistake to ruin an otherwise good play. When you throw in backs without power that miss the hole and you get a lot of 1 yard gains.
Another thing I noticed when Hyde was in the game (same with the Browns and Hillis yesterday) they called a slow developing sweep. A big back like Hyde needs to run up inside where he can build a head of steam and run over the first tackler. Outside runs are better for the quicker backs that can delay and dart through the hole. Unless the defense is totally overmatched a big slower back isn't going to find a hole on the outside.

Two years ago, following the loss to Penn State, Earl Bruce made this point, saying that OSU didn't use sleds anymore.

I'm pretty sure he was joking, cinci. Back in August, some threads got pictures of a new sled they're using this year.

maybe it's not the sled but the guy sitting on it :sneaky:

Makes me glad Sparty didn't want me. I wouldn't have learned nearly as much as from the 3 OL coaches I ended up with in college.
We had one of those sleds in college and they were much easier than the old sled sleds. Probably safer on the field turf.
